First of all, I'm not sure, if this thread is supposed to be here, but because I'm a Junior, I can't write anywhere else, so I apologize, if this is in the wrong place.

Second, I'd like to apologize about me english, I'm finn, so my english isn't quite the best, but I hope it'll do.

And now let's move to the problem, shall we?

First I'd like to tell a bit about me self, or actually about me gaming.
I bought Shogun: Total War, the first day it hit the shelves here in Finland, and I lost me heart to the game.
Altough even then, I hoped, that someone, somewhere, would make a mod of it.
A mod which would contain Europe in the middle ages.
When I heard about Medieval: Total War, I was as happy as a man can be.

Now I finally bought the game, I'm cursin me computer, Microsoft and all the things I can come up with.

I don't know what is the reason for the problem (Well, I wouldn't probably be here, if I did, would I? ;), but the problem is driving me crazy.

I can't play the campaign.
I just can't.
Every time I try to play it, it throws me out.
First I choose the period, then I choose me nation, then I click the Start Campaign button.
The loading-bar comes up, and I wait.
After it has loaded, there appears a new loading-bar, right above the first one.
Just the red thing.

And then I'm in the menu, which comes, if ye press esc while being on the campaign-map.

Now this is driving me crazy, because I can play the
battles, the Historical ones, the Quick ones and even the Custom ones, but for some god-knows-what reason, I just can't play the campaign.

If somebody can help me, I'd really appreciate it, if ye'd be kind enough to help me.

Oh, right, I should've told me specs.
Soeey about that one.

700 Mhz, 224 RAM, Voodo 4.

Ye'r right, it might be the graphic card, because it's quite old, but how come do the battles qork allright then?

It has most likely to do your video card i advise a cheap geforce 4 such as an mx440, perhaps you should go to the settings menu and change the resolution size Upgrade your video drivers

Mmm, I have the latest drivers possible, I tried to change the resolution and widescreen/fullscreen, but nothing helps.

Oh, and I forgot to say, that I'm using Win 2000.

Not sure what quid is trying to get ya but i saw something in the apothecary about a guy having an sb live card in a system which caused it to do what you say yours is doing. Is this the type of sound card you have? It did not give a solution but I'll keep looking.

Yeah, I wasn't quite sure either, about what Quid ment, but I found the same thread, and indeed, he had the same problem as I did, but it had to do with his SBLive?

That's confusing, because I don't have SBLive.

Oh, and n00bie question, where can I find the option Show Enemy Movement?

I haven't had the luck to get the game run yet, but I'll do, bloody hell. I'm not going to give me computer make mockery out of me http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Hello Juunas and a warm welcome to you. BTW, your english is very good.

I don't think your Voodoo4 should pose a problem. I'm running MTW off a Voodoo3. The Campaign map causes problems due to large memmory needed for all the texturing it needs. Question: do the drivers you have for the Voodoo4 support DirectX 8? I know the Voodoo3 drivers didn't. Even though I could play MTW with official drivers, I found some 3rd party Voodoo3 drivers that support DirectX 8 here: Voodoo Files (http://www.voodoofiles.com/). It did seem to improve performance slightly. The other possibility is that it is something in the settings of your Voodoo4 or in your BIOS. Search the Apothecary (campaign). I don't have the time to do so myself at the moment, sorry.

I know what the other guys are going through, as it seems to me we had similar problems discussed in the past week, but I believe it was with notebook PCs.

The voodo 4 card is definitley enogh to play the game, you might have som performance issues with big battles in higher resolutions but the game should start. Also the soundblaster live is no problem I have it on one of my computers and it works perfectly fine, just as well as the newer Audigy cards on the other computers. One note however, your system is as you have probably noticed not up to the Mp requrements (750Mhyz) but I belive I heard of people playing it in Mp on less, does anyone know if that is possible?

Me Me My PII 350 (w/cable) does fine with MP. I can play 2v2 with minimal, sporatic lag. I hadn't the chance to try anything with more players, but I suspect that a 3v3 might be too much for my machine.

Thank ye and thank ye.
It's nice to hear, that all that study did after all have some positive consequence. :=

But back to the problem.

I tought that my drivers supported DirectX 8, but because I wasn't sure, I went to Voodoo Files (Thank ye for the link.), and got new ones, but it was no use.

The problem still occurs, and I'm really starting to consider smashing this old, but fatihdul, thingie in pieces. :=

hehe, before you start smashing up your pc, call activision support and ask them about the cd itself. there were some bad cd's that went out early on. it might be that some made it to where you are. that double red line when loading is what makes me think of this. i believe mine only loads with one red line showing. the problem with those bad cd's was the copy protection stuff was bad on a batch of the cd's. so, all the drivers and upgrades and things that you can do with your system, including taking a hammer to it, wont help a bit if the cd is bad.

I had problems similar to this with Win2K PIII 550, standard old clunker. When I shut down all but the most essential items from the tray I didn't have the problems anymore. I had a bunch of junk running that I don't need to play MTW.

Sometimes it can be tough to pinpoint a problem, the best method is to be methodical and start eliminating the possibilities.

First, have you turned off sound hardware acceleration? What sound card do you have? Also, try those 3rd party drivers, and update the drivers for ALL your hardware, including the BIOS. How much free space do you have on your hard drive? What size is your swap file/virtual memory?
