Its a bit frustrating being able to read but not reply to the main boards, I come up with so many questions about what they are talking about. So seemingly out of the blue I have these.

1. Do govenors have to be in their province to have an effect on them? I always assumed so but the answer seems to be no.

2. In sea battles is it fleet on fleet or are all enemy ships in an area involved? I'm about to have the mother of all naval battles with England (gotta be 300 ships involved) should I set it up as a lot of little 2 on 1 battles or use big fleets?

3. I keep hearing talk about upgrading units but have no idea how its done. Do you have to disband them and rebuild fresh ones? Anyway to upgrade high valor units with obsolete arms and armor without losing their valor points?

Thats the ones I can think of for now, thanks in advance for any help

I'm about to have the mother of all naval battles with England (gotta be 300 ships involved) should I set it up as a lot of little 2 on 1 battles or use big fleets? A fleet has a maximum ammount of ships it can have, I believe the cap is at 12 or so. If you attack an enemy fleet with your fleet, friendly fleet's in the same sea will not attack with you.

Anyway to upgrade high valor units with obsolete arms and armor without losing their valor points? If you select the army that includes the units you want to retrain, than click the unit building button. Select a unit from your army, than drag it into the unit building screen. Note: If a unit cannot be created in that province, you cannot retrain it in that province as well. Retraining will bring your unit's armor and weapons up to level and it will receive new recruits.

1. no

2. fleet on fleet - one stack vs another. so if you have a stack of 4 ships and seperately a single ship, the AI can attack the single ship only. Make sure to outnumber and outpower the enemy ships stacks (fleets) that you attack. Depending on how many stacks/ships the AI has, you may want to use several fleets instead of one large one, becuase you can only attack one stack per year - again, just be sure each stack you attack with is more than a match for the stack that you attack.

3. to upgrade a unit, first you need a weaponsmith or armourer. bring up the prov's training window and then select your army in the same prov which you want to upgrade, drag each unit to one of the que windows. They will be upgraded. Retrained (replenishing numerically under strength units) is the same method. In both cases the prov must be able to train the type of unit that you are upgrading/re-training. If you re-train (add troops to) a high valor unit, the valor is averaged with the fresh recruits, so the valor will probably drop. You can merge higher valor units and usally keep a higher valor - again, the average. A disbanded troop is gone - it can sometimes be found as a mercenary though http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

exile: you don't need weapon or armoror to retrain. The only requirement is that you must be able to train same unit type there.

The way I've been doing sea battles depends on who the defender is. The Byz seem to have a bunch of small 1 ship fleet for them I break my big fleet into an equal number of 2 ship fleets and attack all at the same time. The English seem to build big fleets, for them I use bigger fleets.

But, yeah, if you both have huge fleets then you're in for a slog.

Just want to make sure you have this clear.

If you've got 10 stacks and the enemy has 10 stacks, you can match em up and attack 1 stack vs. 1 stack. Meaning in one turn you can have 10 battles.

In general, though, its going to take awhile to take control of the seas. Especially, since the AI will continue to build ships.

Also, if you have a Trade Network going, realize that once you attack your income from Trade will just about dry up. Then it'll be a countdown with your bank account. You'll need to destroy the enemy fleet and re-establish your Trade Network BEFORE you run out of Florins.

Hehehe...your about to have a S load of fun. Keep us posted on your progress. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

It does help loyalty if your gov is at home in their provence. There is even an 'absentee landlord' vice if you are never there. Contrary to above reply.

Actually no, I couldn't. I think my upgraded status was a response to my frustrated plea. Someone upgraded me after my first post.

The answers seem to be quite good in this forum though, not sure there is a reason to show my newbness in the senior forums anyways, seems to be a lot of MP folks there. I get the feeling they would thwack me pretty good if I even tried it.

I have found trade to be so pwerful a tool that it is the complete opposite. My main goal tends to surround capture of key trading provinces and massive naval buildup. As a general rule the AI has to take the seas from me, not the other way around.

Early naval building and trading can build you up an insurmountable economic edge.

It becomes doubly important when you toss entire armies around with ease to any port in the world.

Just tonight the Italians finally pissed me off enough with their harassing fleets. I assembled an army, after killing off their pitiful fleet, from 5 different provinces and simply crushed Venice. Economic pugilism at its finest http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I'm starting to think that the real weakness in the game is its over-rewarding of trade. In a SP game if you own the seas you pretty much have the money to win any wars.

Ye of little faith. You were promoted hours before the first post above. And you were placed on the promotion list on Jan 16. Your promotion should have been effective the morning of the 17th and your first post wasn't until mid-afternoon (my time). Tosa is very quick to effect the promotions once he gets the list.

So there http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

Actually, you wouldn't be the first person to miss their promotion. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pat.gif

Regarding the senior forums, the Main Hall is dedicated to the SP game, while the Jousting Field is for MP. Don't be bashful about posting there, but you are welcome to post your questions here too. Chances are there is someone else wondering about the same question.
