Canberra sifts through rubble
Sunday, January 19, 2003 Posted: 9:16 PM EST (0216 GMT)

CANBERRA, Australia -- Residents of the bush land around Canberra began sifting through the ashen rubble of their homes after a weekend of ferocious fires that killed four people and destroyed around 400 homes.

Following the worst fires ever to hit the capital, authorities on Monday urged residents whose homes survived not to return yet for fear of more fires or explosions from gas leaks.

Four people were killed from the gust-driven wild fires while hospitals treated around 250 others for burns and smoke inhalation.

Thousands of people were evacuated during a state of emergency, which remains in place. Hundreds of homes were still without power after fires knocked out power stations and lines and the city faces a sewage crisis after a treatment plant was damaged.

Prime Minister John Howard toured some of the scorched areas around Canberra on Sunday, and said it was the worst fire damage he'd ever seen in Australia.

As winds eased on Sunday, firefighters said the blazes that swept through Canberra were mostly under control.

The disaster struck after bush fires burning out of control in forests south of the city raced into Canberra on Saturday afternoon, overwhelming firefighters, who were not able to get to the worst-hit areas.

Smoke blanketed the capital, home to 300,000 people, including hundreds of diplomats, with the city's northern, western and southern outer suburbs whipped by the inferno.

While Canberra is often coined the bush capital, residents were taken by surprise at the fire's spread into the city as Australia struggles with one of its worst droughts in a century.

As some police patrolled charred and deserted neighborhoods following isolated cases of looting, other officers were counting the toll.

So far police say four people have been killed by the fires -- one man died of smoke inhalation while trying to save his house, and an 83-year-old woman was found at her home in Canberra.

A 37-year-old woman was also found dead at her home in the western suburb of Duffy, police said, while Reuters news agency reported a fourth person was found dead in a house in the same area.

The worst bush fires in 50 years were also sweeping out of control through the Snowy Mountains, to the southwest of Canberra on Sunday, as well as in Victoria state and in the north of Sydney, Australia's largest city.

In the weeks before Christmas, at least one man died defending his home as fierce fires raged around Sydney, forcing hundreds to evacuate and engulfing at least 20 houses.

Fires are natural to Australia's dry bush, roaring through parched undergrowth and into oil-filled eucalyptus trees, sparking infernos. As the country's cities grow, homes are encroaching onto natural bush lands.

Oz had problems with brush fires last year too as I recall. It is always sad to see peoples lives go up in smoke and flames. Many things lost are irreplacable. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

But, I know the Ozzie spirit will prevail http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pat.gif

My sympathies go out to those affected by the bush fires,

With EPO's (Environmental Protection Orders) in effect across many new housing developments, escpecially those in bush areas, there is a limit to the number of trees an owner is allowed to cut down,

the problem is

1. - the people making these EPO's live in cities, where access to water is easy (although not cheap - we pay for water here in Oz, just like power - water supply is THE limiting factor on our population)

2. - the best way to fire proof your house in bush areas is to keep the grass near your house short, the trees trimmed (which you can get registered tree surgeons to do in order to prevent falling branches damaging your house) and have a sprinkler system installed on the roof,

3. - water supply in bush areas is regulated by rainfall, with the drought there is limited water available, and many homes rely on tank(rainfall) water - thus they have no water to feed to their sprinkler systems,

a true NO WIN situation...

the moral of the story?
Have an extra water tank that you get topped up by tanker (bore water - undrinkable - cheap) regularly SPECIFICALLY for the sprinkler system...ALSO have a generator of some sort to provide power to the sprinklers - a wind powered pump will do nicely,
(My family have this setup, it works)

im actually thankful that the fires have been here recently already (i live in menai, sthn Sydney, fires came through here abour 2 months ago), where i live has already been hit in both 1994, 1997, and also 2002 now... except last year we were prepared because of the others. Instead of losing a lot of houses here, we lost none

My condolences to the people who are affected by these fires. Losing your worldly possessions to the flames must be devastating, losing a family member even worse. Mother Nature can sure make you feel helpless and insignificant when these natural disasters strike. The Aussies are a tough, stubborn lot though, and will rebound.

I know that fresh, potable water, is at a premium in parts of Australia. I wonder if there is anyway to use/store ocean water for fire safety and fire fighting systems. It is in unlimited supply, the main cost would be transport and storage. It is also highly corrosive, so the equipment used for its storage, transport, and use would have to be specialized. The salt content would not be good for the environment either, but when a community is faced with a fire storm, I would think it would be the lesser of the evils.

Canberra is a little to far from the coast. All the state capitals are on the coast as is about 90% of the population.

So being smart cookies we put the government types and politicians inland... much like where we put our detention centres.

I saw an article about the relative insurance costs.

Canberra is about 100 million plus an extra 20 to 50 million to replace the Stromblo Observatory http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif

While Ash Wednesday in todays terms payed out 324 million.
