I have a high valor prince but all his ghulag bodyguard got killed. Since I am playing the early period I don't think I'll ever get to build them. Is there any way to get my prince some more bodyguards? The manual says a ruler will get replenished over time but I haven't seen that happen with the princes.

The same way you retrain/rebuild any unit. Only the King's unit will self rebuild. There is a post about 7 below this one that explains it.

oh and you need to be able to build the unit you are rebuilding. That is a big part http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

And the missing hint:
Rebuild it by building royal court (so you could train royal bodygard such as the Ghulam Bodygard). To build royal court, you need royal palace.

Thanks, its as I figured then, it will take quite a long time before the prince gets to fight with any troops at his side. It makes sense, otherwise you'd be using the high powered bodyguard against the inferior early units and then just wait for them to grow back If you have good heirs, or an old king anyway, you might as well use the kings bodyguard since they do grow back

I doesn't seem to work for me, as the Early Age has passed and so the bodyguards upgraded. Which means that I can't combine old style with a new one. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

In addition to rebulding your Prince's unit, you can also merge.

A high-valor general in a unit all by himself can still be a valuable asset. His valor rating affects his whole army so he is still a good choice to lead a battle. Just keep him out of the fighting. You may have seen an AI opponent with a single-unit general. Usually, when the battle starts, that general turns around and heads in the opposite direction.

It takes a significant number of years before the auto-upgrades kick in so building a unit to merge with a Prince shouldn't be a problem. However, as you point, if you miss the opportunity then you are SOL for adding units. The good news is that a single person unit has a support cost of zero (maybe 1 in some cases but I don't think so). Keep him around for those battles that don't require a full sixteen units.
