S:TW and M:TW were great with thousands of units and all that. But when playing a battle the first charge and collision of men doesn't seem that dramatic. 200 men might charge eachother, but fight like they were walking. I hope R:TW has units litterally smashing into eachother so we can experience hoplite style clashes.

the 'movie collision' that all of us are familiar from the moovies is not realistic at all. especially from the time the phallanxes and the formations appeared battle is been like walking . Even before that (formations) i somehow do not think that after the collission a fighter would venture 20 meters inside the enemy mass and swordfight with 1 opponent while the rest of the enemies completelly ignore him and do not chop him to pieces ( another movie favorite)

Once I set up a custom battle where a row of German Pikemen faced a downhill charge from some Pronoioi Allegion. The moment of the clash was dramatic. The Pikes literally bent the line of Cavalry backwards
I had to save that one and replay it several times... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wacko.gif
I would say they are far and few between, but MTW does have it's dramatic moments. It also can have something to do with the sprites. Some of the sprites have better animation sequences than others, i.e. Royal Knights vs. Spearmen

I also think that nobody would run right into the enemy lines like Hollywood often shows. I hope that CA will make good animations for Rome, because bad animations don“t look very good on polygon models.
the animations should look very real and what i always found good about the Total War series was that if two units are fighting, the better unit will push the weaker unit away by time, so that there is not only one frontline that never changes.

True.
So far so good on the screenshots on the totalwar website. There looks to be busy screens on that site. The zoom capacity should be awesome, and I thing that the animations will be akin to Playstation 2 strategy games Kessen, but with casualties. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif
