The Pope is down to 2 provinces. I'm all over the map. I'm at war with all of the other Catholic factions, but not attacking any of them. The Byz are enjoying my attentions right now.

The Pope somehow builds a puny ship and attacks my 1 ship occupying fleet. I lose. I'm about to put my 12 ship 5* attack fleet on his holy butt when I start to wonder what will happen.

When I've denied permission to a Crusade I've been immediately excommed. If I attack the holy roller's puny fleet will I be excommed?

How about if I just march some spare armies up his godly arse?

Some prefer a dagger, but the idea is the same. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

You will be excomm..attack him and get rid of him but remember to keep alot of troops on the 2 provinces rome and papal states cause the pope revolts quite often with huge and high tect stacks http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

What about this:

I was excom8d for fighting my brother Catholics (fair enough) then the Pope attacks me and is soundly rebuffed, I prepare for further attacks, His emminence asks that we stop our futile war, which he began, I agree BUT
I am still excom8d http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif

How can I be grand monarch of Europe without becoming a heretic http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/dizzy.gif

I sent the Pope a calling card of a few armies and now I are the pope. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

You're the pope eh? Not for long. Just wait till he comes back with Knights and the lot.

definetly excommed.....i normally leave rome weakly defending but massively surronded then wait till he comes back (usually not too big an army in that prov) and instead of attacking i retreat destroying all the buildings/improvements (this helps to release some of my units) then he spends ages building it up again b4 i decide to kill him off again

repeat as many times as u want but i find it better than constant huge re-emergance of the pope that ties down 3-4 stacks all the time

Pope is quite a cookie, that's true. I think that the tip by Alby is a very good one, and I use this tactics as well. No point in killing the holy man while you can protect him in his two small provinces http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif And you have some time before he actually decides to attack you...

The pope is fun. You can't be excommunicated for defending, but if he sinks a ship you can't sink his for the same. This is where you try to negociate or you conqure him and leave large garrisons with apt armies all over northern italy. Respaws give you one season to place troops as well. THen when you win battles and take his troops, execute all of them despite the vices so his armies are small and weak. Gives you plently of time to conquer the rest of the world while he builds peasants. THen when he attacks your ship repeat the process. I am assuming you have bordering provinces...otherwise it is too early to depend on large trade routes. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/dizzy.gif
