View Full Version : V&V for nothing?
I know this has being discussed a lot in other threads, but this didn't seem to be covered.
First, the event that sparked the question. I am playing Danes, early, on normal. (BTW, people who say the Danes are hard didn't make a *lot* of vikings and roll over their enemies.) I chose not to attack the HRE, but have expanded in Sweden and Norway, and realised I needed to get on the water asap to have any mobility at all. So I have expanded to the Brish isles, and then east to Pomerania et al. I have been keeping a garrison in Denmark, but not a great many, in the hope that the HRE wont attack.
For two turns in a row, the (no star) General in charge of the Denmark garrison gets fearless, and then utterly fearless in his V&V. I think he is a spear unit.
So my question is: is this random, or is it somehow related to him standing off the HRE troop build up in Saxony? And did something trigger this? The same situation pertained for some time before this ahppened, and I only noticed because I was adding a unit or two into the stack in response to a similar build up in Saxony.
Or is it just random?
Not that I mind or anything. I'll just have to try to get this guy some stars so he can make some use of the morale bonus

Hello Hobart, welcome to the org http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif To answer your question, some of the V&V are just random. However, you do have control over some of them by how you handle your generals in battle. If in your case your general never fought in battle and still received good V&V's it was definitely just a random event, nice to be lucky eh? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Don't worry, down the road in your campaign you'll get your share of unearned bad V&V's too, I know I have. Definitely use this general in battle and bestow some titles on him too.
Thanks Hosokawa.
I've certainly seen a number of bad V&V come up, for no apparent reason either. I guess that's just the way life is.
Cheers.

Hi Hobart. I hope you are safe from the fires in your area.
Thanks Gregoshi I hadn't realised we'd made the news in the city of brotherly love, but on reflection I should have expected it.
I'm pleased to report that my suburb hasn't been directly affected, though I had a somewhat tense afternoon at home yesterday while doing a bit more bushfire prep: filling gutters and hosing down things that might catch fire from embers. But luckily, the wind changed and the fires in the region did not come toward us. There is more nasty weather forecast for Saturday, so we might have some more exciting times. But I figure if worsrt comes to worst, all that is really important is getting my children, my wife and myself clear, and the rest can burn. Even if it means that I wont get to play MTW for a while till I get a new computer (and a new copy of MTW!http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
Thanks for the kind thoughts.
Cheers

also, I think that mere movement of a general from province to province (or lack thereof) can influence V&V. I've noticed that generals who I let sit in the same province for 30 years tend to be lazy. and if you declare a battle but then change your mind and opt not to attack, chances are your general will now have some sort of tendency to retreat vice.

Hey Hobart
Just a couple of advices from a guy who´s played the danes for 130 years now.
You really should think twice when you haven´t expanded south into Europe.
One large attack could destroy everything you´ve build because you don´t have buffer regions to stop an attack before it reaches your homeland
I didn´t put a fleet in the sea for more than 100 years - perhaps I waited too long but better wait until your base is secure.
Theres no doubt that moving and fighting with commanders have an effect:
I had a king dying at 64 which was a disaster - then I started fighting with him at the front again, and guess what: The old sodder lived another 9 years before he kicked the bucket http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif
Good luck
I've noticed that when the empire gets very large, despite any attributes (acumen, piety, etc.) all your governors and generals (who bear titles) will become greedy in some way or antoher (family favorites, smuggler) I thought it was just the English, but the HRE did it as well. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif
Reduce tax When you have tax at Very High on all provinces and you keep on filling your coffer, your governors get bad V&V quickly.
I always try to reduce tax when I am comfortable with the revenues I have.

Good point LadyAnn, keeping your taxes high does develop bad V&V for your governors over time. The less money around the less temptation they have to be corrupt. You must build up a sizeable war chest first, then cut taxes, trim expenses.

I've got a game going as the Italians at the moment where I have 200,000 florins and increasing. I don't care if my governors are skimming off the top as I cannot get rid of the cash anyway.
Hey Herodotus, I have the same problem in that I have such a trade empire that I cant spent it all. I'm not up to 200k florins yet, but I soon will be.
Once I start getting more wars going though, I will start taking big hits on the trade front, which will nuke my income, I'm pretty sure. If I could ask for a new reporting feature, it would be a summary of tade income for all provinces, and a breakdown of how much with each other faction. It would make it easier to factor that in to how to choose the next war.
Though to answer my own point, trade is rarely going to make a big diff, esp if you have a lot of money in the bank.
You can never have too much income IMO I had about 85,000 florins in the bank as the Byzantines in one campaign, then everyone in Europe attacked me (5 crusades against me at once), no-one would trade with me and my income quickly went to minus 36,000 florins This made for a rough 25 years or so until I banged a few heads together and anihilated a few crusades. Then those powers that I had no borders in commmon with returned to neutral and I could trade again. Now it's 1225 and I have to quickly finish off the Spanish before the horde arrives to wipe out my eastern provinces http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
