I've had some odd things happening, and wondered if they had happened to anyone else?

1. Sicily warred on my ships without declaring war. I struck back and the Pope excommed me. Then, they were at peace without notice.

2. A few turns later, the Hungarians sank one of my ships. I go to retaliate and it asks if I want to declare war on Hungary??? They were at peace immediately???

3. If you are excommed, the Pope asks for a crusade against you. You aren't notified of this???

4. An entire fleet of four ships disappeared.

The diplomacy is just so frustrating. At a point, nobody will ally with you, even if it's in their best interest. I have not attacked anyone in this campaign as a Spaniard, only retaliated. I've ransacked entire factions, again and again offering them peace which they reject. Part of this is I've kept my King too close to home, safe. I've since read that the monarch winning battles raises influence. So he's out there leading armies, now, but I doubt this will have any effect.

I'm going to win this one, obviously, so I guess it's time to start another campaign and see if I can get the others to back me better. Or they will DIE http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I love this game, but sure wish there were some very small changes to make the choices of what type of campaign you wish to follow more available. Thanks, guys, I've learned so much from you on this pretty difficult, very deep game.

the ship attacks, war, then no war is a known thing. it does seem odd, granted. it's not a true bug, just sort of an odd design quirk. what happens is that the ai attacks you by ship, your ship or their ship dies and you are no longer adjacent to any of their owned provinces so the war dies out. it's sort of like peace is declared because someone has retreated and is no longer a threat. remember, a turn is one year, so, in that year, there was an attack, a withdrawal or end of threat, a stagnation, and then simply lost interest in war and thus no war. this is true in both your siciily and hungarian examples. it's the same thing in both.

normally, there is a popup message that tells you when the pope is calling for a crusade against someone, including you, but, there doesnt have to be a message for someone to declare a crusade against you if you've been excommed. they've just taken their own initiative in the matter and didnt wait for the pope to ask for it.

ships or units just suddenly disappearing is a bug. no idea what causes it. report it in the game bug thread in the apothecary.

yeah, the diplomacy routines could stand some work and yes, it is near impossible at times to get anyone to relent and end a war. think of it as a mad king who is so bent on your destruction that he's willing to suicide his entire nation to do it; i'm sure we've all known a few people like this in real life ;) hopefully, the diplomacy thing will be stronger in the expansion pack and rome game.

yes, a number of us wish that CA had left a team of folks on the game to tweak and polish it, but at this point, all we can hope for is that the expansion pack will improve things a bit.

I agree with Kraellin the diplomacy aspect leaves alot to be desired ,what gets me still is when you retaliate in defense you are the one to excommunicated ,solution bide your time then go in and pound the pope . http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Beware the Sicillians - they are very agressive towards the players' ships. If I have boats in the same sea squares as these backstabbing **$%& I always stack them in twos or threes. Seems to deter them from picking a fight http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif
IMO, the pope is WAY too quick to excomm you for fighting sea battles. These salty skirmishes took place throughout history, with piracy being big business for the English (amongst others&#33http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif but two years is all you get http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

Note: the one turn war does NOT always work if YOU are the one doing it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

Had a new glitch happen the other night.

Attacked Flanders; won battle; pop out to campaign map and half my army has disappeared...there is however a stack of rebels from Brittany in the zone. Save and reload, my army re-appears, but the guys from Brittany are still there; not attacking or defending...just hanging out?

When I attacked Brittany the stack sitting in Flanders appeared on the battle-map http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/dizzy.gif

First time I have ever run into anything quite this screwed up http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

Sorry I've been so long in replying and thanking those who replied. My C: drive died.

While I'm used to some oddities in games since I've been playing them back to when I had hair, these seemed totally odd. I really suffered a setback when my fleet disappeared. I had been fighting the HRE in the northern seas when Sicily backstabbed me.

Love the game. So close to perfect.
