After your king dies, the hier who is next in line becomes the new king. This is the right of succession. I assume it is based on the hiers order of birth.

This has been debated some, but I think it picks one of your more technologically advanced places, or a centralized location. Usually it puts mine in the capital since its my highest advanced place.

That's very interesting, hmmm......

Yup, on the two campaigns I've done so far the new kings always showed up in the capital of the empire (Constantinople for my Byzantine campaign, Castille/Cordoba for the Spanish). I'd wager that that's historically accurate since there was usually a big coronation ceremony and celebration in the capital for the new kings...

JND, http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif Welcome and thanks for becoming part of the Org community. Thanks too for that confirmation.

Here is a question for someone who's played the Turks and kicked out the Byzantines early: did you new king appear in the Turkish captial or Constantinople?

I was under the assumption that you new king appeared in a province that contains a Royal Palace... Which for me has always been the nations 'capitol', as it starts out with one and defaults to being your most advance province anyway...

But what if you have more than one palace?

I'm playing the Biz., early, my king just died, and the new king reappeared in, you guessed it Constantinople. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif

Quote[/b] ]But what if you have more than one palace?

Actually just remembered my first campaign.. as England/Early. Had a Royal Palace in Wessex and one in Sardinia... My kings had always appeared in Wessex, and then the very first time my king died after capturing Sardinia, my next king was crowned in Sardinia... So, I really don't know. My assumption of needing a Royal Palace is still founded, but technology..? Maybe Sardinia created 'better' Royal Knights...

Cheers.

Technology plays a role. King & heirs of France were fighting in Turkey, when the king died. Then the heir was promoted to king... in Sweden where I had upgraded the techs the most(was my only province with Iron). Unfortunately, I do not remember wether there was a royal thing there...

Isn`t it the province with the oldest royal palace?

I agree, A. Saturnus, it appears to be the oldest royal castle.

I just finished my first post patch campaign as the Spanish. Thought my capital was Castile till the first succession after taking Constantinople. King's coronation was there, not Castile.

actually i believe its rather the closest royal palace

once i had just taken russia and my king died during a defence (still won but was a lot harder and later led to the loss of a few provences for a while) the heir was in russia leading another army - i had no palaces in russia and the nearest was Switzerland and thats where he ended up - it was just a keep but it was the closest palace and bingo - thats where he ended up

I have been the Turks twice in the late periods. The first time i had taken constantinople (i did both times) and not long after my king popped his clogs and my heir was crowed in constantinople. The second time my king had died after taking constantinople and he was crowed in Rum (mmmmmmmmm rum...) even though they were roughly the same size

well guys i just played thes byzants and my king and heirs were in constantinopil, my most advanced prov

upon dying my king appeared in granada

this provence only had a keep/bower/spearmaker, so no advanced buildings of any kind

upon reloading few times (i always save it just incase i get the dreaded 10,000 army restarts) he still keep appearing there

out of desperation i destroyed the spearmaker and heypresto my king respawned in my capitol

most confusing if you ask me, kind of puts a hole in the theory of most advanced provence maybe it was because i was campaigning thru spain and the king needed to be near his troops or summat http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

any1 from CA got anything concrete on the conditions for this as it seems like a lottery to me

this pheonomenon is caused mainly due to evil wizards that will mysteriously and randomly transport the new king to a province because he does not like your faction

To back up Alby...

Playing the English, I never use my King or ANY royal heirs for commanding field armies, after my first two battles to take Wales and Scotland. All royal commanders are kept safe in Wessex.

Now, 95% of the time, when my King dies, the heir is crowned in Wessex. (Which of course is both the oldest and the closest palace to boot.)

But once in a while, he will pop up mysteriously in another province. The most common place has been Aquitaine in the early stages of games. This is of course a bind since I have sometimes not yet had the ships to get him home to Wessex, and the French still hold the other end of the Flanders land-bridge. I agree that, after Wessex, Aquitaine has usually been my next most developed province at that point in the game.

So, I am certain it is not connected to oldest or closest palace, and it is certainly not connected to location of heir upon father's death.

Also worth noting that I regularly see the AI French heir pop up in Brittany in early games before I have relieved him od that possession. Now, the French King has never been there, because my armies have been in the way, in Anjou and Normandy, so his sons will not have been born there. Nor does he have a fleet at this point, so the heir cannot have sailed there.

No big deal, at least for me, but intriguing. Shades of Earl Harold getting shipwrecked in Normandy and supposedly pledging allegiance to William The Bastard?

Playing has the HRE, my new king usually appear inn Swabia (most developped province early in the game) or in Friesland (most developped province with an access to sea but not palace whatsoever). I even remember having one king popping um in Sardinia.

Lo and behold the mystery that is the succesion question

This is how the appearance of the next King works:

You players by now should have realised that the best cavalry unit is often the unit where princes and especially Kings/Emperors/Khalifah/Sultan are in command of, therefore the province most likely to produce the best cavalry units with the best possbile upgrades will recieve the honour of the next sovereign appearing there.

Even if that province isn't able to produce those units which Kings and princes commands it is the province with the closent ability to produce them that wins the cake and slices it with his scimitar

Here's my experience, i made a new unit recently, this is the Klibanophori, a step above the Kats, when i had the ability to make these Klibs in Constantinople the Byz Emperors and their heirs switched to the Klibanophori units and appeared in Constantinople on the new succession because:
a] Constantinople could make the Klibs
b] Klibs are better than Kats

I recommend that as you expand your empire you eliminate any royal palaces from conquered territory that can be isolated from your home provinces, islands especially.
