View Full Version : Pope's Warning
When the Pope tells me to lay off the poor mistreated in 2 years and stay off for 10 years. Exactly which year does that start?
I recieved the warning when the calendar showed 1238. I thought that means I can hit the year button twice after this. Since the calendar advanced to 1239 after the warning, that should be after 1241 when I have to let the miscreants be. In 1241 I attacked to finish off the problem and was excommed.
Exactly what is the timing sequence? When do the warnings, battles, etc actually occur?

He gives you two turns, including the one that you're on which he warns you. If he warns you in 1150, you have to give the orders to pull out in 1151, or you'll get excommed.
The best solution is to order the assault on the castles as soon as the warning arrives, and sit passively thereafter. Or you can invade the papal states http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Hey, it almost worked for Barbarossa...

Excommunication sounds worse than it is, especially if your empire is much bigger than the other Catholic powers'. That is not to say you should not care at all about it, but take the provinces if you really need them, or if losing them will deal a crushing blow to your enemy. Worry about crusades and possible revolts later. Revolts only occur when clerical agents arent placed and garrisons are low.
The best bit is when he excommunicates you and offers you an alliance, in that order, in the same turn, then calls for a crusade against you, his ally, the following turn.
On days like that, you just have to assume Alexander VI has arrived a couple of centuries early. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Yeah, soe of these old-timers in Rome did not have a lot to do so they would just mess around with politics... Just like above, the turn after the excommunication is the worst, after that you should be relativly OK...

Being excommunicated while playing with a Catholic faction is going to happen eventually. Best bet is to not care about it, expand quick and keep taxes at a normal level or keep them as high as you want with a high dread governor, and you'll be fine. I usually leave the Papal States for when I own half of Europe. Thats usually a good time for me to invade.
This is my first post, hi everybody
Two tricks i use BEFORE deciding to attack is to look at the age of your own faction leader and or the pope. If either one of them dies the excommunication is ended.
Look at the faction you attack can you finish him of in two turns ? Then simply move forward to avoid the issue altogether.

Hello bbmetr http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif welcome to the Entrance Hall. I like to have a few assassins handy to help his Holiness see the light or fall off the balcony, his choice. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif Looking ahead, as you suggest, is a wise decision before plunging into a war. The biggest problem with excommunication is it's effects on population happiness. A province that is lightly garrisoned may revolt.
one experiance of mine i had a fe nights ago. playing as the Italians its kinda there duty to prevent the Pope being overrun by any1 ( thats the way i play. the Protecters of the Pope) well anyway i decided to ride out from Venice and attack the HRE. soon enough i was Excomed. i got so pissed i trained an assasin to kill him. (THE ASSASIN CAME OUT WITH 5 STARS ) The pope was killed easily. so from now on i keep that 5 star killer in the Papal states. Hes Killed 4 different Popes to date.

If the need really should arise, I leave that task up to my Grand Inquistors. I want the whole world to see him burn.
