View Full Version : Can someone explain this to me?
I'm playing the Italians in the early period. I Bided my time and built up my shipping lanes, only snatching a new province or two as it went into rebellion. Life is good, the HRE got a lil uppity for a short time there so I smacked them back to the stone age. Pope is a little ticked off, but he'll get over it.
Basically its down to three factions now. A couple of minor ones still exist but England owns the West, Egypt the East, and I hold the center. Still allied with England I decide its time to start cutting into Egypt.
Egypt and England are both larger, but I have nearly 300k florins banked and the ability to make some fairly advanced units. I also have a big edge in sea power, at least in the Med where it counts. I build some armys and launch the sea battle, quickly turning the Egyptians into landlubbers. Then I hit and hold on to key economic provinces.
I look to take Khazaar for it strategic position as well as nice economy and low and behold the entire Golden Horde is sitting there, as rebels. Must be 15,000 troops sitting there. No way I'm taking them out.
Fast forward 10 turns. I'm calmly rolling up the eastern Med provinces one or two at a time. I've already taken the key areas, now I'm just connecting the dots. The English are wearing the Egyptians out in the north while I do the same from the south. When I again check out Khazar what do I see?
15,000 Egyptian troops Just as we were putting the darn Egytians in their rightful place the entire Golden Horde went from grey to yellow.
Basically the English are reeling, beaten almost back to the channel. I'm just trying to keep the kill counts up as they throw 6000 man armies against every province I took. Life is tough right now (I'll survive and win eventually I think).
Anyways, what happened? What caused the Horde to appear as rebels in the first place? What caused them to join the Egyptians? I'm a bit confused.
Thanks

with all these soldiers their upkeep must be huge . try to dealy fighting with them if you can and maybe you can make em go bankrupt , you ll have to fight the horde eventually but after that it ll be easier.
Ahhh, bribery. Well they probably did have the money for it. Before I attacked they had all of the black sea and eastern Med and most of eastern europe as well.
That was my strategy from the start was to cut their trade routes and take key economic centers and hope to push them to bankrupcy in many provinces making my job easier. I probably should have stuck to it.
Thanks for the replies everyone Back to the game.

Freaking great game isn't it
Just when you thought things were under control, BANG there's a surprise for ya.
Sometimes, rebels when faced against overwhelming factions, will choose one to join. Apparently, The Golden Horder only comes in Horde, hence the 15,000. Such a number for other factions would I think be unusual.
Good Luck http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Have Fun
I still feel ripped off when I see numbers like this for the horde. I got a measly 1700 when they came in my game, wierd to outnumber them 2 to 1.

Does the horde have to come up with maintenance costs? I don't know that I've ever seen them actually build anything. How can they have income without buildings?
One time when I was the Almohads, the swiss and a rebel province joined my side.
This seems to occur if you surround a province for an extended period of time. It doesn't matter how many troops surround them either.

Cause a rebellion in Khazaar.
Then bribe the rebels, and take over the province.
It's cheaper to bribe rebels, and you might get your hands on some great units. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
The GH probably had a civil war and joined the Egyptians I was the Byzantines once, had a civil war and my entire land force either went rebel or went to the french or english...

I think you are on to the most likely scenario jimmi6j. The kahn probably got killed/died and the faction went rebel. Bad luck for the GH.

I assume they have maintenance costs just like everybody else but with their huge numbers they would be in negative almost from the start. However in my last campaign they were extremely aggressive unlike previous games. took on the Egyptians, Russians, Byzantines, Turks & Hungarians all at once and beat them all. Owned most of the steppes, down to syria and past Constaninople and into Bulgaria & Greece.
Pushed other factions up against my provinces - they took their chances with me rather than the horde. Was a stragne campaign as Sicilains were other major faction. Also never seen that before http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

Last night while playing as the Novgorod (tough faction to play BTW, very rebellious provinces nearby that even attack you in your territories if you are not careful)
When the GH showed up, I sent my best emmissary and my youngest princess over to try and secure the eastern steeps via diplomacy. The Khan of the GH told my Emmissary something like We can't make an alliance at this time. The cost of supporting our forces is too great (wish I could recall it exactly).
Of course, after my 17 year old princess arrived on the scene, the whole situation changed and getting the Khan a wife seemed more important than those maintenance costs. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Nah, I'll hang around for a bit. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif
I rode out the Horde storm. The English didn't do so well so they aren't helping me with the Egyptians anymore while they try and shore up rebel provinces back near home.
A funny thing happened after finally taking Khazar from the Egyptians. That very turn The Golden Horde reappeared there. *sigh* Wasn't that big a deal but I did have to spend 30 minutes chasing off 3700 archers and urban militia (strangely only 2 calvary units reappeared ).
So I hold Constantinople, Kiev, Khazar, and the rich eastern Med provinces (holding back yearly attempt to take back Constantinople, thats really got the AI irked). I also have the entire northern African coast for what its worth. I'm now being told I have the largest Army so things are good. Two thirds of that 300k Florins is spent though.
I started to continue north towards Muscovy but now I think thats spreading it a bit thin. I'm going to go back and finish of the southern Black Sea provinces and work from there. As long as you hold the sea itself and Khazar you can create a nice little buffer zone.
We'll see.

Im kinda confused right now... i've been through a lot of posts talking about THE HORDE, and THE HORDE, and then again THE HORDE. And they mention thousands and thousands of troops... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif
In my games the horde appears with nothing much... perhaps some 3000 troops. And they are gone just like that... because the turks or the Byzs waste them, that is, when its not me doing the wasting.
Does this have anything to do with difficulty level (i'm playing normal...)
