View Full Version : my 2 cents about units
I started playing the expansion today and this is what i have gathered so far:
Thunder bombers can decimate an entire unit in about 2 secs.
Skirmishers kick ass and can decimate an entire unit in about 2 secs.
Heavy cav can decimate an entire unit is about 2 secs.
basically the mongols rule.

I believe you about the last two, but thunder bombers? I think you must be talking about them with a height advantage, because when I played with them, their rate of fire added to their range and speed make them next to useless.
Fighting Mongols takes a change from normal tactics. Other than online play, where you can buy a ton of MHC, they are not a real big deal.
Javelins are devastating on defense, but the range is way short and they move slowly when in firing line (skirmish order http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/tongue.gif).
Thunda bombas iz just fun. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif I think my favorite was when I used them to break a seige. The first unit took out the YC holding the gate, but the last throw dropped in the unit with some of the booms falling in the unit standing a bit back behind them.
The other units had to toss over the wall at the CA and it was just funny. Bombs flying into the pagoda area, over one wall across the corner and exploding outside the other wall, bouncing off the wall back into the unit. LOL, too funny. But it was an effective way to cause body count after letting a KS sit and eat all the CA arrows at max range.

I'm personally glad to see that the new units are causing consternation in the community. This adds a whole new level to STW, since we now have to experiment with new tactics and strategies. Sure, you might get your butt handed to you at first by the Mongols, but there is always a counter. Monks used to seem invincible too......
Aye, I agree with you on the sanda bomas... they only good when hurling downhill. On several occasions so far using them on flat, even ground, I have seen -- to the horror of my men -- the idiot sanda bomas drop an entire salvo on themselves! Just imagine... 12 sanda bomas dropping 12 bomas on themselves, and only 1 lives to tell about it. Until he gets the bright idea of dropping his next boma on his foot again, that is...
But, I have put my sanda bomas into wedgies and charged them into the jap yari lines to great effect. Don't underestimate the H2H capabilities of these versatile units. And, you get an extra tactical bonus: the whole concept of the suicide boma! Run the idiots into a formation to engage the enemy. Then, while surrounded by foes, have them fire a salvo. So they kill themselves! So what? They take everybody around them with them! A great tactical tool for those fond of the strategies of Jihad...

i tell you..... mine didn't missbehave or anything... mine threw those bad boys UPHILL into a castle and decimated a unit of NDs in about 2 throws
