Ok, I've been searching for a way to modify the year that the game will end(1453). I can't seem to find any posts that really tell you how. Can anyone please help???

I don't know whether that is possible, I think it might be hard-coded. If you just want a longer campaign, then you could change the starting date, that is easily done by editing the text files in the startpos folder.

I've tried to change the starting dates and all, but after you exit the game and come back to it, you won't be able to build the more advanced units because the game thinks your in early period after you reload.

Ah yes, you could edit the unit files so as to make any unit available even in the early age. Check the Dungeon forum or I'm sure other peeps can help you here too as I got to go now...
ok go to downloads section and go to fixes then download
MTW_julien_year1454_limit_fix
then follow the instrustions and it changes date to 1454 so your peasants can travel to Mars (but do fix near end date otherwise you get kings who are in their 90's http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif )

Also go to the downloads page and get GnomeUnitbuildproj editor v2.0 you can modify all units to be included in early,high and late . It is well done in a very easy to use format
