Would it not be interesting to see an AOM-like mod for Rome TW?

Think about it, Hordes Minotaur supported by line after line of Centaur archers all marching on Rome

Personally, I'm not into that stuff too much anymore.

Just adding my vote saying NO to mythological elements. It would make it silly. Part of the appeal of TW games to me is that you can pretend its real, and there aren't many things in the series that ruin that. Minitaurs would, though. A worthy successor to Master of Magic (http://www.proaxis.com/~jarvinen/magic/magic.shtml) (MoM) would be wonderful. For you unfortunates out there who have never played it, MoM was a fantasy themed Civilization type game. The game took place on two random maps, the normal world, and the parallel world of Myrror. You started with a single city, in which you could make building upgrades and troops. You could settle new cities or conquer those of your enemies. Rather than technology, you could research spells. The game's combat mechanism allowed you to march your troops around a combat map, and was superior to any other Civ game's combat before or since. Victory was obtained by either defeating all your enemies or casting the ultimate Spell of Mastery.

MoM was released in 1993, and I still play it today. It's on my personal list of Best Computer Games of All Time.

I am not saying this is something CA should consider, at least not until they've completed a great series of games spaning the history of human civilization. Mythos TW would be a nice project for an expert mod maker in the meantime. I don't think until AOM was there a serious atempt to recreate historical myth & folk lore into a RTS or the like, but rather games based on modern mythology such as tolkien and later spins such as Dungeons & Dragons which IMO are rather over used. I definitely agree with most people here. Fantasy would ruin the series. Maybe, if CA is done with everything interesting in history, which will be quite a while from now.

If most people don't want fantasy, why then LOTR is winning in the poll on the home page?

First of all I respect all of your opinions here. But please read my post carefully. I stated a MOD for TW not an Expansion or new game. At least not presently. CA is doing a great job covering real history at the moment, which I'm happy with.

I really don't understand this formula Chapius? Fantasy modeled after reality is possible. After all you have to start somewhere. In other words a Centaur is half horse have man, all the laws of nature including the physics of how his weapons work apply. The only shift from reality would be God Like interventions and diplomacy which of course would be tailored to the playablity of the game. Personally I think AOM is a great idea, but it is too cartoony and doesn't have the grand scale of TW for me.

I for one would agree that it would be an awesome mod. After seeing the opening movie for Age of Mythology on my mate's computer. I thought damn it would make an awesome game with a graphics engine like the one in Rome: Total War it would make.

Even if CA wouldn't like to make it, I'm sure they could liscense the graphics engine to another games developer to develop a fantasy game. CA probably would not have to compete with a fantasy game, because its obvious that most of the hardcore fans want a realistic historical simulation, which would mean they would be gaining money with the licenscing fees rather than losing money in competition. In fact I believe that there would be more of a mainstream appeal with a fantasy game, for instance look at the recent popularity of the Lord of the Rings franchise.

I agree: Keep the TW series realistic: No fantasy. However fantasy mods are a good idea for those that want that sort of thing. But making a whole TW game based on fantasy will make it a whole new genre.

I'm actually with Asus on this, even though I'm a hardcore 'what-if' history nut...because I think that MODs drive developers to the next level (along with economic considerations o'course). The more we users explore the viability and playability of 'other' scenarios, the more time they spend exploring how their algorithyms might accomodate such.
