I tried it once and quickly found that I was awful when comapred to everyone else and that has put me off now for quite a while. I don;t want to try again till I can win practicaly any battle against the AI, then i may give it another go/
I also don't like the whole team game thing too much, I like to be independant in a battle and not have to trust (or be obliged to help) other players too much.

You can always play 1v1

And no matter how much you train against the AI you can never just go online and start beating some veterans.

The thing that really bugs me is to see a lot of people having problems entering their cd-key or complaining about invalid account info...we help a lot of people but I wonder how many lost interest and dropped MP because of the problems. It has to made easier to avoid all that.

But yes do give it a try, even if you have some problems logging on or you feel you are a crappy player..takes time to develop skill.

The MP is an experience that all have to do http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
It's simply a great world, you can see a bloody war between members of 2 clans and many very honourable signs of friendship and valour
http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif
So after playn MP i think you will not come back to SP and never playn other games... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/shock.gif
I think with a MP Campaign MTW would be perfect, someone try to build it,but is an heavy work.

I play lots of LAN games, haven't online yet. I don't think it would be the same when you can't laugh with the person who you just massacred.

I really want to play MTW online but im unsure as to how well it would run on my pc:

AMD Athlon 12000mhz
256mb RAM
NVIDIA TNT2 M64 Pro http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif (i know, i know, its crap but im gonna get a new one soon http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif)
56.k Internet connections

So with the above specs would it be worth playing? Any tips on perhaps fixing up the gameplay?

Tone down the video settings, and make sure you have the hardware to handle the sound properly.

Total War would have been stored on my shelf a week after buying it without MP. I started playing in August 2000 and never looked back.

Hooked? Nah. Addicted? Neither. Dependent? Yes. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

Some fairly limited poll choices. I've tried it and enjoyed it immensely but I haven't tried again. I'm not quite sure why I haven't tried again. I suppose I like the stratetic aspects of SP so much that I play it more. It could also be the fact that I hate losing. Seeing that I won my first and only MP-battle it may be tempting to retire with a 100% win ratio. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Oh well, I suppose I should have a go at it again.

Well, I take my hat off to those of you capable of playing without regular use of the pause function. I'm beginning to wonder if I'm the only one who has to stop every 30 seconds to check on everything and issue orders.

Ah well, it's resulted in a 100% record in SP so far, at least.

No longer hooked, No longer addicted.
I still love it, and will play anytime, time permitting.

Couple of things to point out:

-I REGULARLY play with people from Australia who are on 56k. We have NO PROBLEM and enjoy the games. Please do a search for lag or lagg on the engine, there is a thread called lagg: we hate it, that is a good article written by Giskard from www.respawn.co.uk It is worth a read, very educative.

-My PC is 4 years old, I play with minimum graphics settings and have NO PROBLEM. nevertheless I'm going uptown to P4, Radeon country very soon. In anticipation of better games to come.

-You cannot compare AI with human players, the AI will never (unless the code is totally revamped) be as good as a human player. MP & SP are two DIFFERENT games. I have a campaign in which my armies have hot a valor 6-8 average with generals being 10-14 valor, however I often get a thrashing in MP. The AI cannot simulate human intelligence and behaviour adequately enough to compensate abandoning the challenge of MP. There is little point is experimenting with the Ai for longer than one month at 5 hours per week playing time. The real education lies in communication with veterans, and playing on the MP battlefield.

Salute http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

Hope to see you guys online

Ahh and here is a reply by a Creative Assembly programmer:

Quote[/b] ]So you probably now can't blame a 56K modem for lag when hosting, and you definitely can't blame it when used by a non-hosting player. That's what I think.

Simple reason:

MP just isn't my thing. /shrug

I probably suck at it, I just might be good at it, who knows. I buy most computer games for the solo play.

Don't try and talk me into it, it just doesn't interest me http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif The Strategic campaign is what I have MTW for, the battles are just an added bonus. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Now, if there was a viable MP campaign option, who knows...

Cheers.

Welcome to the Org Hyperbolic. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

Both SP and MP have their interesting points which have already been mentioned.

For those who are thinking about trying MP or are a little reluctant, try arranging a date/time with an online friend or three and trying it with some people you know. Or hook up with some of the others in this thread that have been thinking about giving it a try too. I find it much, much easier playing against someone I know as opposed to a total stranger. I have rarely gone online to fish for opponents - I'm almost always meeting someone to play. Chatting before, after and even during a battle adds quite ia bit of fun to the experience. You can't swap battle reports with the AI. You should give it a try at least once. It is a different game than SP battles.

As for hardware to play online, I do have a cable connection but I've played 2v2s with a P2 350 and a (unsupported) Voodoo3 graphics card. The box says you need a P3 750 for multiplay... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif So go for it You've nothing to lose but the battle.

Well, is it possible to play MP with no modem at all ???
Actually, I have a modem and a phone line (that`s not standard for Belgian student rooms http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif ) but I can`t use the modem. Maybe it expects a German phone signal http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

I hope you realize that you don't have enough options in your poll http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

My answer would be that I have never played MTW online, but it is something that I would like to try some time. Before I do, however, I want to finish the campaign I have been playing and then install the patch. Then I might actually try it.

I've been reading through the strategy tips that have been recommended, but I haven't been able to find the answers to all of my questions:

Do players online still use the Pause button?

I ask because I tend to use Pause an awful lot to make sure my formations work and my tactics execute appropriately. If Pause really isn't used online, then I will need to practice a few custom battles against the AI without using it before I jump into an online battle.

Quote[/b] (Windwood @ Mar. 11 2003,19:07)]Do players online still use the Pause button?
Nope Windwood, there is no pause button online, the game ticks ticks & ticks towards the inevitable conclusion. Its fast, furious and hectic, a completely new experience from the battles you are used to in SP.

The only thing I might recommend you train at vs the AI in SP before going online is choosing some armies you feel comfortable with in the 15-30k florin region. That might help some. Other than that you will find very little use of your SP battle experience, but you'll adapt and learn http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

OK, I got bored playing CS today. I'm off to get GS.

Anyone want to thrash a newbie?

It may take my ageing brain a while to sort things out (i.e. I've got a better half and kids so I'm not talking about tomorrow) but drop me a line if you fancy some fresh arse for smacking.

I didn't realise you didn't have to get GS. It all looks like it works. Maybe this ageing brain isn't quite so blunt.

Or maybe not, on reflection.

I'd play if there was a MP campaign. The battles are fun but so far I haven't even played a custom battle against the AI yet. I only do campaigns. I have done customs before, but only castle sieges because I never see them in campaigns. I have more fun doing the thinking stuff than the clicking stuff.
