Hi all. I searched for this topic and didn't find it, so I figured I'd ask. What determines whether the Pope will give a player (catholic faction, of course) the 1000 florin handout? I thought it was to encourage a player to ally with him, but in a recent game he was giving me money but refusing to ally. It also seems to have nothing to do with zeal or building churches. Does it have to do with gross mismanagement of my economy? I'd really like to find a way to get the pope to fund more of my war effort(s).

Thanks,

Guthwyn

I believe it has somthing to do with the piety of your ruler, the date of the game, and perhaps the amount of converts you pull in.

It does happen at the start of the early period, but I also have had it happen in high and late at random intervals. I crusade often and spread inquisitors and cardinals like little kids spread germs so id guess thats why.

One may have nothing to do with the other, but one time I got 1000 florins the year after using a crusade to conquer a pagan state. I think this has happened in a few of my games, but otherwise it has just seemed random.

I read somewhere the pope gives money to the faction with the least money in it's treasur. I noticed it when I was playing the Spanish and spendet almost all my money every year.

I guess it's a way to help the weak, just like excommunication is a way to tone down the big guys.

What?? The pope can actually do something to help you?

I have been playing this game (on and off) since it came out and the pope has never been anything but a pain in the ass (I usually play as the English).

I do like the idea of the pope I just wish he was more interactive like you could bribe to end an excommunication, ask for permission to go to war with another catholic faction etc...

It would also be nice if he treated the comp and me the same, just once I'd like to see the French excommunicated for starting the war and not me for finishing it.

I hope the RTW has a faction that is similar in function to the pope a, political agency that judges your actions, but I am not sure if historically their was any such organization.

I once got a 1000 florins from him as the Byzantiniums which was kind of odd... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

I think in RTW the senate plays the part of the Pope.

Hi Guthwyn and welcome to the Org. Don't expect 1000 florin from us but the folks here will help you when you need it or entertain and engage you when you don't.

The Papacy is a strange entity. BTW, if I understand it correctly, the Rome Senate in RTW will be a Pope-like organization.

Edit: Duh Nothing like repeating something BDC already said. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/dizzy.gif

This happend to me one time.

I was playing the english and the italians attackt my fleet, after some years of figthing neither was clearly winning. The pope treathens to x-comms me so I send a emmissary to the italians to ask a ceasefire. Next year the Italians propose a ceasefire.
IMHO the only reason for them to stop fighting me must have been the treath of x-comm.

once when i started a campaign as the germans I recieved a hand out every turn for the first 5 turns. I noticed that my leaders piety was very high. I did not launch any crusades however. I was building very rapidly and i did train several priests to place in pagan countries before their eventual conquest. I often wish i had saved the game on the first turn and replayed to see what factors contributed to the pope's generosity. Those 5,000 extra florins in the early game really set me up nicely.

It looks like the comment about the give-away happening only at the begining of the game is onto something. I did not have the grant anytime after first 20-40 years...

I think it has to do with crusading. In my HRE-campaign, I had three crusades to Palestine, Tripoli and Antioch. I had much money and my zeal wasn`t very high, still the Pope gave me handouts twice.

The pope has a table on who he likes best, it's mainly to do with who is at war with who and piety of your king. Every turn he will give a hand out to the top person on the list if he have spare money. That's why it happens often at the start of the game as every faction has a large warchest to begin with, later on in the game, the pope spend his money on new stuff and upkeep first, he won't have much spare cash lying around.

Coo...that was unexpected. Thanks ECS. That's actually rather logical.

I've got to admit, it's really cool to get a question answered by a programmer. And you have cleared up all my questions about what appeared to be a random event. Thanks, ECS.
