Hey-o peoples Just a quick question, which has probably been asked a dozen times before...
Why no ranged seige weaponry in MTW? VI shall be adding the spectacle of boiling oil, but no rams...

My guess is because on most castles (as I understand it) the only place that a battering ram would be effective was the gate. In MTW you can send any melee unit to attack the main gate in an attempt to destroy it. Effectively acting like a battering ram. So while you do not have a specialized unit you can still attempt the same type of attack.
But you got me think about all different kinds of non ranged siege weapons that would be cool to have, batter rams (as you mention) siege towers, ladders and lets not forget sappers (now they would be a cool unit).
However I think for these units to be fun we’d need long drawn out sieges with defenders on the wall
Maybe in MTW 2….

sappers, ladders, and towers to be in Rome:Total war. Can't wait. I only hope that they use that engine and re-release MTW using it soon after... It would make the many Sieges MUCH more entertaining

These things take time folks If you haven't played Shogun Total War, the only way to attack a castle/fort was to force your way through the wide-open front gate. Talk about a bottleneck. MTW sieges are a giant improvement over its predecesor. Maybe by TW5 you'll be able to into the tunnels with the sappers and do some digging too. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/shock.gif

How could I forget?
A big double greetings and welcome to ArseClown and LeeJackson. You can put away your rams and siege towers, you won't need them here. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pat.gif

Bah Ram Ewe...
Thank you for the welcome Gregoshi. Its good to be a member of the boards after years of lurking (back in the STW days).
And good of you to point out those STW bottleneck slaughter fests that castle sieges used to be. Which now that I think of it are basically what the bridge crossing maps are. Now only if I could get some sappers to work on the bridges...
hmm....I thought I remember reading somewhere that in RTW you will be able to tunnel to get into castles....not exactly sure though.

I believe that you can't use weapons like rams and siege towers in mtw becourse the game motor isn't advenced enought. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

Hah, game motor? I am sure it could model the ram or two guys with ladder with no problems.
But here comes a good news: let's celebrate my 300th post http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif
Shogun had seige engines ,they were called Kensai
just get 4 of these through the gate and voila
..............now that i think about it was a silly

Hi again peoples,
Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to this. Thanks for the replies, keep them coming http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
The main reason I brought it up is that the opening cinematic features a seige tower, but then... you know... Dammit, I want rams http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif
Hi Gregoshi, thanks for the welcome party I don't believe I shall have the time to become a permanent resident here http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif but we shall see what the future brings.
