i just bought STW WE yesterday afternoon and have been trying to lear my way around the game. i've encountered a few strange problems that persist even after upgrading to v1.02. At the menu screens, the red backgound will sometimes start flickering quite badly. also, the worst one is that the game will occasionally kick me out to the desktop without warning or error messages. However, the error log says this:

D:\Shogungold\Main3d_1.cpp(4949) : DirectX call : DDERR_OUTOFVIDEOMEMORY

its happened a few times during the second battle of tokugawa's historical campaign. also, the framerate drops a lot sometimes during the battles. i try to run the game at 1024x768 for the most part but the menu screens are at a different default that my monitor cant really handle (either 640x480 or 800x600). I also have a default refresh rate of 75hz although im not sure if the game uses it.
someone please help me out this game is good and i wanna play it ><
let me know if any addition info about my setup is needed.

thanks in advance.

here is my setup:
WinXP SP1
P4 2.26gHz
256mb RAM
GeForce2 mx/mx400 16mb
DirectX 8.1

all the game settings are on maximum (i have tried different army sizes tho) and i have tried enabling 8-bit textures as well.

Your hardware/software combo is certainly up-to-spec for Warlord Edition. Looking at that error message, I'm guessing your swapfile needs adjusting. Sorry, I've limited XP experience (is that redunant? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif ), but try to find whatever XP calls 'video control devices' and un-click the DMA (direct memory access) option buttons. On Win ME, it's: right-click MyComputer, left-click Properties, DeviceManager, SystemDevices, DMA controller, Settings.

Your refresh rate of 75MHz should be OK (depending on your monitor, o'course). I've never tried to run WE at anything higher than 800x600.

This is just a shot in the dark, m8; hope your prob resolves; Also, dig around in the Shogun forum (the Sword Dojo) & the Apothocary for more insight. If you remain stuck, I'll re-post your prob in those forums for the experts to take a crack at.

thanks for the reply =)
unfortunately, i cant find any DMA controller settings in my device manager/profiles...
anywho, this is the weirdest part: like i said, this is on the second battle of tokugawa ieyasu's historical campaign, the one where u hafta take takeda's (i think) fort. anyway, iv managed to play the battle all the way through, taking up to 19 min. however, it only plays the entire way through as long as im LOSING. the last few times iv played i was winning quite early on and i got a ctd after roughly 5 min.

oh and my bad again.... my refresh is 70hz... my new system is using an old monitor so there are all sorts of problems when running several sizes/refresh rates. and im using detonator drivers 41.09 (my other games seem to like this driver version so im reluctant to try anything else)

i looked around the sword dojo and i didnt find anything that helped... could u please repost this in the apothecary section?

is this game still officially supported? maybe i can bug sum1 at EA.

ab, is the tokugawa fort battle the one where some takeda appear immediately behind you? If you have the patch installed, then that is the problem. If you re-install the game and don't patch it, then you should be able to complete that battle without problem. As I recall, there were 1-2 battles in the Mongol Historical Campaign that suffered from the same problem. My suggestion is to re-install, don't patch and play through all the HCs. Once you've completed those campaigns, then install the patch.

If the above is not your problem, then we'll re-post this to the Apothecary. BTW, you might find an answer in the totalwar.com support forum here (http://pub24.ezboard.com/fshoguntotalwarfrm2).
