Do you have any back ground programs that are running? If another program starts (or tries to preform an action) up while your in the game it will often boot you to windows.

Also, when you are kicked off, are you still connected to the internet? If not, your internet provider may have an inactivity logoff setup. Unfortunately, gaming is considered inactivity in some cases. You may need to check your providers web site for how to play online games successfully or give them a call.

I know at one time Netzero would try to disconnect you if it thought you weren't looking at its popup ads. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif Rather annoying when you are downloading a large file and you know you can't walk away until it is done.

So what are you doing when it crashes to desktop? Battle? Strategy Map? Multiplayer? When it crashes to desktop, is Medieval still minimized in your taskbar?

Does this happen all the time? Did the game used to work OK, but now doesn't?

What kind of processor, sound card, video card & memory do you have? Are the drivers for your video and sound card up-to-date? Do you have DirectX 8.1 or above? You say: 10 minutes...how far into the game do you get before crash? Does the intro movie run? Do you have MTW patch 1.1? What flavor of Windows do you have (98, ME, 2K, XP)? What kind of internet connestion do you have? Who is your ISP?

Finally, have you tried offering jasmine incense to the computer games gods? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Check out a few of the suggestions here: Weird Huh? (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=2;t=3310;hl=10+and+minutes)

To add to Kukri's list of questions: do you have a firewall running? Does this always happen at the same point or at different places during the game?

I did when I was having problems with MTW but it didn't work and my girlfriend wouldn't come near me for a week. Why, oh, why do I listen to the mods? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Incense doesn't work on Greek computers. You guys have to gargle Ouzo, while spinning on one foot, clicking your fingers, ala Zorba. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif Oh, and you must have some facial hair.

jones21: any progress?

its gonna be a long night isn't it? The facial hair I can do. we Greeks are hairy monsters, just look at our priests. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I believe it is Internet Service Provider but I'm only guessing.

LeeJackson

Yes ISP is Internet Service Provider i.e. Who you get your internet access through.

OK, now we're getting somewhere. What we don't have here is a machine/game compatability problem; it a comm problem.

Possible culprits are:
-GameSpy
-Your ISP (AOL, MSN, Earthlink, etc)
-the handshake process between your machine & your battle-m8's

I suspect the 'handshake', since everything works OK until you start building your army. On a 56K modem connection, it could take a few minutes for your machine to tell your host's machine what kind of database you have (in other words, what version of MTW you have, patched or unpatched, modified or not); ALL the players must have EXACTLY the same database (MTW version) or else you get booted.

So: more questions: Are you running a mod? Trying to join a mod-ed game without having the mod yourself?

You ask what is mod = you don't have one. Good. Me too, no mod. Look for me online as kukri; what name do you use? I'll try and find you, and host a 1v1 game just for you, named jones. Let's try & see what happens on my end.
