View Full Version : Has anyone played MULTIPLAYER ONLY ?
Hello ALL
There are a number of games that are MULTIPLAYER ONLY.
That means they have no Single Player option.
There are games out there which are MP oriented and are deep, with campaign like features.
e.g
Dark Age of Camelot (http://www.darkageofcamelot.com)
This game is MP only and has over 92,000 registered players who pay a monthly fee of about 7 euros.
Thx for you vote and attention http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

I played Tribes, Unreal Tournment, and quake 3. I loved the first and would buy teh next in both serries but my comp is crap http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif
both quake and UT had a single palyer mode, but i don't think playing aginst bots counts.
I would love to try a mmorgp but I will have to wait till I can afford a new system.

I play the DAoC, nice game http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
I guess a mp only campaign could be possible, but not to pay a monthly fee for.
Good morning,
My name is Elwe, and I am a recovering EverQuest addict. I haven't played EQ for 3 1/2 months now, and my life is finally getting back on track.
(Played it for 2 years, thoroughly enjoyed the first year, the next six months were so so, and the last six months were just logging on because I was addicted. Finally gave it up at the end of last year when they released yet another expansion pack... Was a very enjoyable game, it just gets rather monotonous and tedious when you reach the higher levels if you live on the opposite side of the world to America... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif )
Cheers.

I used to play Ultima Online back in the day. That was the massively multiplayer RPG for the REAL MEN http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif
You could kill anybody you wanted at any time, and when they died you could loot their body clean. You could also be a thief and rob people of stuff. If you killed too many innocent players then you'd be known as a murderer and people would hunt you without penalty and get a bounty for your head. If you killed people in town the guards would come after you, but sometimes you could kill the person quick enough if you wanted to do a murder-suicide haha.
Eventually too many people whined that murderers were making the game too hard and they eventually took out all that type of stuff. Now its a little kiddie game.
I used to be really addicted to it because you could never really relax. In Everquest you can kind of just get up and walk away from the computer for awhile in town and nothing will happen, but in Ultima Online you could come back to find yourself robbed clean. Always had to be on your guard. I think the player-violence added a lot more player interaction to the game in the sense that people needed to work together.
Certain areas were frequented by unsavory folk such as myself and traveling alone through those areas wasn't really advised if you liked staying alive. Making friends was necessary. Even as an antisocial mass murderer you better make friends because there's going to be a lot of bounty hunter types out there looking for you.
Yeah, I'm rambling on, but until they make an online game with the freedom and interaction that Ultima Online once had, I won't be playing any at all.

I find time is a great problem for me on MP only games....
The monthly value would not be worth the outlay, as I can only get a coiple of hours per night to play....
Most of my time goes on Total war is some way or another....
I believe I've played 4 MP-only games.
1. MUD (Multi-user Dungeon) Text-based (M)MORPGs from the early 90's. Actually hundreds of games/servers based on variations on the same theme. It totally took over my life, made me stop studying which meant I totally flunked my second year at the university. I tried to cut all real life social contact to an absolute forced minimum. On the positive side I found my better half there and had some outrageous fun for about 2 years. These games are still alive (after 10 years or more) although the player base is fading into nothingness, but you can try it (it's all free and requires no downloads as it's text-based). Type telnet:mud.veda.is:4000 in the address field of your browser to connect to my old home. Those few with no telnet ability can't connect.
2. Counterstrike (assuming the mod is a game in itself and not MP Half-Life)
3. Email X-COM. Very simple but quite entertaining.
4. Eve Online. MMORPG space trading/fighting in the Elite-genre. This one has recently replaced MTW as my currently most played game. It's only a betatest, but it's lovely and usually has between 500-1300 players at any given time. You can sign up for betatest at www.eve-online.com. You'll probably quickly be acceptet for testing as they're testing the load capacity.
I played Everquest....alot. Almost every day for 4 years.
I have 2 accounts and pay the subscription costs for both. I have not played in 2003 because I have goteen bored of it. MTW has been a substitute. Everquest has always pulled me back in though.
Addictive? Lets put it this way.
I smoked Ciggarettes for 8 years and was able to quit.
I cannot quit Everquest.
I used to play Counterstrike last year for a certain amount of time. But it has been made uninteresting to me.... by developers. (they wanted to focus on the masses who shall buy CS:condition zero)
