It's been a while, but here's what I remember:
(1) You must expel the rival faction (Imagawa?) from the Island you share. Try to do it so that they do not contest the bridge province.
(2) You have good farming land, invest in it.
(3) One of your provinces I think gives high honour No-Dachi, which you get a discount on. Go for that building.
(4) Build up your toehold on the mainland for troop producing; it has iron. Defend it well to deter the Mori.
(5) Probably a good idea to take the rebel island near you for economic reasons. Try to pre-empt Mori but avoid getting adjacent to Oda (don't take the central little island, Aki?)
(6) Roll up Mori: they are poor and the front is a narrow one. They will probably expel Takeda before you get to their lands.
(7) You should now be strong enough to best Oda and the rest of Japan, but beware the Hojo Horde Going for high tech stuff will make life easier, especially Naginata cav (plus Warrior Monks, of course).

Mongol:

Wow, a STW question. When are you having probs? I always have trouble right at the start, then again when I have the island, then finally when I meet Hojo.

Start: Make sure you have saved enough koku to build 1 army every season. Alternate between yari samurai and archers. Hold the crossing to Iyo with a small army (1 smaller than Ronin), keep minimum troops back to maintain loyalty, then push up the left side. Take one province on the second turn, fourth turn, sixth turn.

Don't worry about building anything except money-makers and men until you can hold Nagato and Iyo. Make nice w/ Mori until then. Keep your army the minimum necessary to hold the two choke points. Keep a small reserve behind each.

Now build up your civ, focus on Monks. Wait. When Mori looks weak start moving down the neck. If you can afford two fronts take Tosa from the Ronin (sooner the better 'cause they build up fast).

Once you get to Awa/Awari and Bingo focus on Geisha. Use Geisha to kill every royal Hojo (or whoever is massive by this time). Stop again and build up the Aki/Hoki/Suo area, 'cause of the armor. Then continue expanding.

Expand, build, expand, build, expand.

That's my strategy, hope that helps

If you play MI or WE, there are different time period that you can start. I wrote this using the default time period (as in thr original STW) with MI/WE version:

If you start in this time period playing either MI or WE version, you already have Nagato and IIRC the ability to build Sword Dojo.

Here is a rough map

http://www.pdoan8.com/tour51.jpg

1. Stage 1 - The big circle:
- Hold on to Nagato. It's the only one province with armoury early in the campaign. And be nice to the Mori.
- You will need to eliminate the Imagawa on this island ASAP so you can focus your resources somewhere else.
- You will have some rich farmland (the Imagawa's land) so upgrade the farmland there as quick as you can.
- No-Daichi is you advantage and you have one province (the South most on the left) produce +1 valour No-Daichi. No-Daichi is very powerful earlier in the campaign when there are not too many Monk and HC.

2. Stage 2 - The small circle: after stage 1, I will rest for a few years trying to make money and build some decent troops. Once, I am economically stable and have army strong enough, I will expand again.
- I prefer to go for this island instead of (or prior to) making war with the Mori. Iyo has a mine, Sanuki has good farmland output, Tosa produces +1 valour Ashi (nice earlier but not so useful later). You can have easy access to Mori's land and Central Japan through Bizen and Kawachi. You should do this before the Mori. Otherwise, the Mori may become too strong to deal with.
- After you have taken the small island, the Mori will be your next victim. You can either advance East from Nagato or from both Nagato and Sanuki.

3. Stage 3 - Power up: bit by bit, take everything left of this line (with some teching up along the way if posible). I will try to advance up to Tajima, Harima and Kawachi (or Awaji). From here, concentrate on teching up, making money and producing higher quality troops as you like.

Now, the taking rest of Japan is up to you.
