Hello all from Lehesu. Don't come in the Entrance Hall often, but those that know me know of the vast wealth of wisdome of all things useful that I have accrued over the years and they all look towards me for guidance and incessantly ask for my opinion. As deluged my all of the obsequious and pompous quotes as I am, I shall now endeavor to actually visit the Entrance Hall, from which all manner of wise men such as I, and the Moderators, sprung. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

Quiet some new patrons here. Hi walther von klingen, hi Jeff. Hey, we could turn this into a general hello-thread, everyone new, posts here http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Reaching the 501 isn`t that difficult. Just make abuse of the 1-word-story-thread. It helps also if you`re an America-basher or defender, plenty of opportunities then http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif
Since I have only one post in the 1-word-story, I`m obviously into the ladder (I`m on the basher-side http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif )

I haven't got time for bashing any bashers from either side,
playing the Turks, early, hard, in 1130 most of my provinces have suddenly turned yellow or red. I don't even dare to push the shift or end year button. Enough bashing for me in 1131 http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif

I had most of the provinces on very hight tax, almost no garrisons and the Sultan in some remote corner. Then I lost Constantinople to the Byz and messed up the invasions into Georgia and Egypt in the same turn. Suddenly my people turnded against me. Must have lost confidence.
I went back one savegame, just defended Constantinople with exactly the same army, but this time I won, called off the attacks on Georgia and Egypt. Everybody seemed happy afterwards, even with very high taxes. I took Egypt two years later.

hello walther http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif
Some advice for you that I've unfortunately learned the very very hard way: keep your provinces strongly garrisoned. There are a few reasons for this: #1 is that as you start to become a major superpower rebellions will happen more and more often, best to be prepared. #2 is that if you are defeated by a surprise attack in a border province you will have acces to large sized force that can push back the enemy or at least hold them off until your main armies arrive.
#3, and probably the most important reason, is that if there is a loyalist revolt, and trust me there will be many, you will need a very strong force to, if not defeat, inflict serious casualties on the enemy and hold them off for your main armies. As an example: when I play the Byzantines I usually keep 300 Byzantine Infantry, 120 Trebizond Archers and 40 Horse Archers in a province, and sometimes a unit of kataphraktoi if it is an important or moneymaking province. If it is on the border I generally keep almost full stacks; i'm a very cautious man when it coems to virtual war http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
As the game progresses, and if you only have small garrisons, you're in for some trouble as I've learned all too well.

Heraclius, it depends on what difficulty you play. Even in hard, a garrison of 150 men should be enough in lands that are away from the border if you use buildings and spies to keep the loyalty high. Having large armies everywhere is not only cost intensive but also dangerous. Usually it`s difficult to get so much generals with high loyalty. So when you have a lot of armies under disloyal generals, civil war will get much harder.

actually on hard and expert I've only had the occasional civil war. Just to make it clear however, which I should have done in my first post, that was playing as the Byzantines and Islamic factions, whom I find have much higher loyalty generals. I do use buildings to increase loyalty and happiness but have found spies relatively useless.

Hi guys, welcome to the war http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
I rarely have any problems with rebellions because I keep the tax reasonable (normal to high) and make sure that I have enough forces ready to garrison the new province. I learned the hard way that a 300 men army might be enough to take a province, but that a 800 men army was needed to keep the people in check for the first years. The garrison troops can be cheap peasants. They are just as good for garrison duty as long as they don't actually have to fight.

Early on it might be a bit tight, but I try to build up the economy as fast as possible. I build trade improvements and try to stay on the good side of potential trade partners, especially if they might intercept my trade with factions further away. I'm now playing as the Danes in the high period. I took Sweden and bribed Lithuania early, but then I just kept a low profile the next 50 turns and built and sent ships into the Med. Right know I've got strong forces with a tech advantage on the AI and a 4000+ yearly profit and about 80 000 florins in the bank. I've recently concentrated on the East, destroyed the Golden Horde, and making sure to be friendly to the English and the Spanish who are the other major powers in Europe. I can now go on the warpath either to the East and keep my income from the trade or go West and rely on the bankreserves for quite while. I try to fight on my terms and avoid combat unless very bored or certain of winning or achieving my objectives.

I try to get on the good side of my major trading partners and the powers of Europe but too often I find that they attack me and throw my economy into dissaray. To counter this I generally build huge farm improvements etc and horde thousands of florins early in the game.

Which factions do you usually play as?
Heraclius
03-29-2003, 21:00
my overiding favorite would be the Byzantines. I've also played some good games with the Almohads, Italians and Russians and have a soft spot for a nice English game now and then. But probably 60% of my games are played as the Byzantines.

The Bysantines got a problem with their location. Stuck right in the middle of Crusader highway and you've got the muslims right behind you with few directions to expand. In short a recipe for trouble. I usually play as the Danes, but doesn't get attacked very often actually. I usually try to match the garrisons in neighboring provinces. To strong and they get nervous and start a building race, too weak and they get tempted.
hey, hello to everyone around here ...
