View Full Version : Question about Attacking and Defending

This may sound kind of strange but I'm thoroughly confused after looking at the unit stats on www.totalwarassembly.com

What exactly is an attacking and a defending stat? For instance, if my troops are standing still and I don't click on an enemy for them to attack and the enemy runs headfirst into me, does that make me the defender, and thus my defense stat determines if I live or die?

What if I decide to charge my army into the enemy's headfirst (who is also charging at me), who's attack/defense stats are taken into account?

What do these stats mean and what in what situations do they take affect?

Any help would be appreciated http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

There must be some topic somewhere answering this question...

To sum it up;

Your units use both attack and defense in fight, whatever you do.

Your attack is compared to your opponent defense to assess your chance of killing an opponent.

Your defense is compared to the ennemy attack to see if you will get killed.

double cliking on an ennemy unit will set a charge (if not already in h2h); bonus to attack

Various positions (wedge...) and orders (engage / hold) give some boni/mali to Attack and defense (and also to morale... most important stat of all). Many other variable...

Before you ask,, Armor is used against missile.

Hope it helps...

Then there is honour witch affects how fast a unit will rout if losing a fight, or beeing flanked and such...

Isn't that true for the shields?

Armor upgrades do not translate to h2h combat? Why the feudal man at arms have then their heavy armor in the description, while they also have the shield?

Smok Wawelski, armour upgrades help both defence (anti-melee) and armour (anti-missile) stats. Post-patch, IIRC, shields do not show up on the defence or armour stats but are factored in during the calculations. They are kept separate as the shields don't always count - eg if you are struck from behind or are in melee with a two-handed weapon.
There are two threads on armour in the TOC in the main hall that explain everything (eventually).
