I have experimented a lot with the unit sizes and balancing the game. I have come to the conclusion that decreasing the unit size of the really strong units is not the write way to do things.
I have experimented with building units at there approximate size as close as possible to there real numbers. In the first attempt I uses the maximum allowed by the game of 200 men for infantry and 180 for cavalry. In the second exactly the half of it. One more assumption was made … the western units were a bit handicapped in numbers 180 men for infantry and 160 for cavalry to make way for the vast numbers of the eastern armies. The balancing came from the cost of the units. Some high quality units went write through the roof with a starting price at 2000+ florins http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif
But you should see what happen when in the Patrician mod I pitted 9 Spartan Hoplites (32 x 6 rows deep total 1,728 men ) Vs 16 Celtic Warriors ( 50 x 4 rows deep total 3,200 men) … http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
I will try and post some pics from similar engagements but I will say just this I had a line of Steppe Cavalry stretching from the one side of the map to the other 5 rows deep http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif
