I have experimented a lot with the unit sizes and balancing the game. I have come to the conclusion that decreasing the unit size of the really strong units is not the write way to do things.
I have experimented with building units at there approximate size as close as possible to there real numbers. In the first attempt I uses the maximum allowed by the game of 200 men for infantry and 180 for cavalry. In the second exactly the half of it. One more assumption was made … the western units were a bit handicapped in numbers 180 men for infantry and 160 for cavalry to make way for the vast numbers of the eastern armies. The balancing came from the cost of the units. Some high quality units went write through the roof with a starting price at 2000+ florins http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif
But you should see what happen when in the Patrician mod I pitted 9 Spartan Hoplites (32 x 6 rows deep total 1,728 men ) Vs 16 Celtic Warriors ( 50 x 4 rows deep total 3,200 men) … http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
I will try and post some pics from similar engagements but I will say just this I had a line of Steppe Cavalry stretching from the one side of the map to the other 5 rows deep http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif

Can you still use the units for any manuvering(SP)? It seems that move forward would be the only option...

Is the maximum number of unit sizes at 200 locked?

Can you lets say make the default size of spearmen 500 and set the unit size as large so u get 1000 spearmen units.

I would like to cover the landscape with soldiers with armies ranging from 15,000 - 30,000 the average size of armies.

IIRC, the max size is 200. If you have the unit size at 200 men in default unit size, you can not change the unit size to large or huge in the option menu because the game won't take any more than 200 men. Also, that is the reason why SAP is 96 men instead of 100 men since SAP is the King's unit for Swiss. If it was 100 men, at huge unit size = 200 plus the King = 201, the game will crash.

I am playing with larger unit size too. It's nice to see a thousand+ peasants battle against a couple hundred knights and was able to hold on for quite some time. At the end of every battle, dead bodies cover the whole battleground make the scene more spetacular.

I will make a few screen shots to show the grand scale of it.

Sorry for not posting any replies but it seemed that nobody cared for some time
Yes max unit size is 200 so you can’t go higher. If you put your units there you will not be able to play at other setting but normal.
The main thing is that you have to have a VERY good machine to do it since at these sizes it really drains the power of the CPU. I made a game where all units where nearly at 200men … OK my Hoplites used the standard (half) Enomotia of 128men. The result was spectacular but it could hardly play with a P4 1.8GHz and an ATI 7000.
I now use the 100 men unit size for all my units and cavalry are 80 – 90 men. It is steel a mess.
Maneuvering is difficult … a good reason to think more. Using a square formation make thing easier and on the other hand the Sariza Phalanx was a 16x16 formation.

One more thing … the Swiss somehow managed to revive the Phalanx and they fought in a similar way. So it is not difficult how they ended with the 96 number. 16x6 men formation this is half the standard Hoplite Phalanx (32x6 though this varied with 32x8). All units in the game have a total size = unit size-1+commanding officer in the king unit that is the king. You can see that if you check the properties of any unit in mid-game.
In the Persian wars mod I will have the 100men unit as standard but I might have a ”BIG” that the unit size will be 200.

I modded my game to double the size of every unit and I just play on Default sizes. It basically makes the game play as Huge except units don't take 2 turns to build. I like it better. Plus, Royal Knights are 40 men instead of 20, which they'd be in Huge units.
