What does it take for you to give up a campaign?

I am currently playing as the Danes, the year is 1412 and I own a little over 60% of the map and have the strongest army and about 12000 florins. But it hasn't always been so, at one time I was down 60k, Had two civil wars where my lands were split ca 50/50, but thanks to loyalist rebbelions some returned without fighting. Both the swiss and the Burgundians appeared and began taking lands from me. But I never gave up, eventhough I at times doubted that I would manage to get out on top. The only time I have given up campaigns where I was playing seriously was just before Christmas with the french and the English. Where I just didn't bother.

So what does it take for you to give up on a campaign ?

Well I have played on expert recently (after deeming myself too good for Hard anymore) and have found myself giving up on two occasions, both for the same reason. It was this, Ususaly in my Half or quarter of Europe, i would emerge as the dominant force, and as i usuaally play the English I never have much contact with the east or south untill later on in the game. Now by the time that i am what would be called a force to reon with, there was always another empire, nealry twice as big and strong that had emerged at the other side of the map, e.g the Almohavids or the Byzantines. Now both times I was forced into war with these mighty powers and if aided by allies i felt i may triumph. But No, both times all of my allies left me as soon as the super power attacked me, and whats worse they started taking bites out of my empire and soon I was in decline everywhere. I just gave up once, when I was playing Polish, controlled all the eastern europe, parts of germany, Const and other but hit the late era with no better units than FeudalMAA or retainers... I guess it was premature to give up, but I was just exsausted and surprised by the difficulty of playing as Polish.
