View Full Version : Darn Crusades

Why the heck don't crusades go the direct route to their target provinces rather than just zig-zagging through my provinces? Wait, I just answered my own question. It's because they want half of my Italian Infantry and arbalesters isn't it - DAMN THEM
Due to my excellent network of spies, assassins and border forts, I saw the biggest crusade approaching Venice from the HRE. Ah-ha I thought. I see you and I bet I know where you're headed next. So I moved the army of Prince Vitale into a neighbouring province and left only a garrison of 320 troops (2xspearmen, 2xarchers) in the castle. The very next turn the crusade enters Venice (Gasp, Shock ) and takes half of the garrison. The next turn it moves off back into the HRE and then returns the year after. I had forgotten to move the Prince's army back into Venice and the second coming of the crusade takes enough of my troops to cause an uprising..... There were 1100 Catholic rebels with knights, trebuchets and other nasty stuff I have my taxes in most provinces set to Very High, so I guess it's my own fault. In my desperation to keep my elite troops I ended up having a battle I only just won and lost more of those elite troops in fighting than the crusade would have taken.
In vengeance I thought I would raise my own crusade and send it traipsing around Europe aimlessly - oh that's right, I can't build chapter houses or crusades..... BAH
I'll just have to push up the price of exported pizza and pasta - that'll show 'em......

Exporting pasta and pizza. My god that made me laugh. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif
See if you could bump up the price of pot noodle too. The student body of the world would collapse over night.

I would freeze the export of Pot Noodles if I controlled them, but alas they are manufactured in France for the sole purpose of destroying British student's braincells.
Well the pasta makers lie smack in the path of most crsades from the West. It's not just the HRE that will hassle you, the French, Eglish will too, usually.
In one game I got soooooo fed up I simply attcked every crusade attempting to disturb my pasta makers.
What's a better solution ? Well one thing I know is do not ally with the HRE coz then they can use your trading fleet to move their crusaders to the Middle East. If you are not allied with them they will not go down to Tuscany or Venice in order to hitch a boat ride.
How about taking Tyrolia as a buffer ?

I was playing a Spanish game where I was starting to make headway against the Almohads and, later, against the Egyptians. I had just taken Morocco. The pope called for a crusade against the Almohads. The Germans started one with the target of Tunisia. I was able to start a crusade targeted on Egypt. The crusade accompanied by some of my regulars kept two provinces ahead of the German crusade. When I took Tunisia, the German crusade disappeared. Of course, the men they skimmed off of my armies along the way never reappeared. I took it out on Egypt. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mad.gif

I was playing a game with the Italians on hard and was starting to make headway into Croatia and Serbia. Then a French crusade comes and keeps going BACK AND FORTH http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif for years depleting my army much faster than I could rebuild it The Hungarians attacked and I lost both provinces. GAH
have you loaded the 1.1 version patch (the only patch)? i believe this makes the crusades take a more direct route. although they can still take direct route to your shipping lanes, as discussed.
by the way, hindsight, whats with Appenzell logo when you are from Philly? Spent a few days there several years ago, really enjoyed it and the cheese is primo.

Um.. just as a sidenote.. the Italians can build Chapter Houses and Crusades, unless you've installed some mod.

My last name is Appenzeller. I've lived in Illinois, Wisconsin, Florida, Delaware, Missouri, and Pennsylvania. I've visited Appenzell Switzerland with my wife. When we were in Appenzell, the people there told us that there are very few people in Appenzell who have the name Appenzeller, and the ones who have that name had moved into the canton from the outside. My theory is that people with the last name of Appenzeller had ancestors who moved out of Appenzell. Maybe they had a different last name or no last name at all (since family names were kind of fluid -- a lot of times being based on the occupation of the head of the household). My family has traced our ancestors back to the mid-1700s in Germany. We never did (so far as I know) figure out who left Appenzell and what his name was. There aren't very many Appenzellers around. There is an Appenzell, Pennsylvania somewhere. My parents have been there. That's about all I know -- and some things I'm not sure about. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
thanks, just wondered. my family was orig from germany also, moved over in mid-1800s, dont know much before that except supposedly they had come to germany from sweden well before that since name has roots from a river valley in sweden(viking invasion?).
