well, i was thinking: what kind of weird food is there in the world? one day... it was the day we had raspeball... bluurgh...

tell others what weird food humankind has made:

here in norway we have:

raspeball: a grey ball, made from potatoes mashed into a porridge substance and balled together

lutefisk: fish laid in a bowl of caustic soda for a few hours or days, then in water for a few hours or days then cooked. kind of a fish jelly...

rakfisk: fish laid to rot, often in a hole in the ground or in a shed for months. This rotten fish is then cooked or put in an oven.. obvious sign of decomposing

gamalost: several years old cheese, often 5 or ten years. Corny and blue haired cheese (like a punker) http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

smalahove: a sheeps head, barbequed and then eaten whole (except for the bones), eyesapple and the whole lot.

thats it for now but im sure to find more wonderful and horrifying things in the wonderous kitchen of Norway http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

Chips and Gravy? Sounds like tea for most Geordies, nothing strange in eating that.

cocoretzi: a Greek dish banned by the EU, but everyone still eats it All I'll say is that it is made from every part of the lamb you don't want to know about. But it's still delicious. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Scrapple - a spiced ground pork sausage with other unknown additives formed into a loaf. It has a great taste but a very mushy consistency which reminds me of pre-chewed food. It is mushy enough to make me wonder how it retains its shape. It is a Pennsylvania Dutch (Deutsch - German) food.

When the Philadelphia mayor makes a friendly wager with another city mayor over a major sporting event, scrapple is always part of the Philadelphia payment. We ship a lot of scrapple to other cities as a result. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

Ok, not vulgar, but I seriously wouldn't want to try it myself:

Australia (Specifically South Australia)
Pie Floater: A meat pie (the size of a large man's palm) upside down in a bowl of pea soup, then saturated in tomato sauce.

Cheers.

Well, as far as the USA goes, I would have to say chili. Not that chili is weird or uniquely from the USA, it is more of a Tex-mex North American thing than anything else. It is also much more well known than other strange foods.

However, the redeeming quality of chili is that when contests and bake-offs focus around it, the variations and overall incendiary qualities of the chili make it one of a kind.

In Northern Michigan region there are pasties, which this site (http://kenanderson.net/pasties/index.html) describes as portable meat pies that became popular in the mining community of Cornwall, England and caught on up north over here.

I dont know if Vernors is being produced in a limited region anymore, but it used to be only available around Michigan. If you dont know what it is, it is a sort of high-powered Ginger Ale. Do you get Vernors in your area?

That is all I can think of for now.

Never heard of Vernors here in Pennsylvania.

We have the 'haring', it is absolutely delicious, but you have to be Dutch http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif It is a fish, that is decayed so badly that it gets soft..........yummie. It is not cooked or baked at all, we let let the raw fish slip into our throats.

We chinese eat everything, so its pretty hard to pick some specially gross dish out.
thought there is a local dish here(non chinese dish) where the thigh bone of a lamb is cooked with a sweet and hot red sauce. You chew the meat off the bone and as the finale you extract the marrow out of the bone by knocking it on the table until the marrow slides out.

We, the Vietnamese, eat almost everything. I can't think of anything that can be refered as weird food. However, I think most of our common foods may be strange to Westerner.

- Deep fry or stir fry silkworm: very delicious and nutritious. This food originated from the Northern part of Vietnam where there are more silk making business.

- Che' : this snack-like food is originate in the Central Part of Vietnam. Shreded raw pork skin (main ingredient) and a little of fine chopped raw pork mix with roasted sesame and roasted rice powder then tightly wrap in small banana leaf cone about 2 inches long. Let them sit for about 3-5 days. No cooking is required. Slighly sour taste.

- Nem Chua: similar to Che'. Nem is originated in the Southern part of Vietnam. Fine grounded raw pork (main ingredient), shreded raw pork skin, whole black pepper, chopped garlic and hot chili pepper. Tightly (much tighter than Che' ) wrap with fig leaves (part of the ingredients), in small square pieces about 1-1 1/2 inch each side. Let them sit for 3-5 days. No cooking required. It has slighly sour taste so we eat it with the inner layers of the fig leaves wrap which have a bitter taste.

- Herbal pig brain stew. A favorite food of students during the exam season. Brain enhancement food, people say.

- Herbal bull penis stew. The traditional strenght enhance food. People say it enhances sexual activity too.

- My favorite: Tiet Canh. Main ingredient is raw duck or pig blood. I prefer duck blood. Raw blood is poured into a dish contain a thin layer of cooked and finely chopped liver, stomach, intestine, heart (plus pig ear and tounge if using pig blood). Let it sit for awhile until the blood is thicken like jelly. Put some mince mint leaves (of different kinds), chopped deep fry purple onion and crush roasted peanut. Some slices of lemon and a special sauce (fish sauce, garlic, ginger, lemon juice, sugar).

I also like snake (cobra) porridge or stir fry with different kinds of mushroom, jungle bat porridge, raw beef salad (thin slices of raw beef in lemon juice).

Do not ask me for the name, but it is kind of what Black Pudding (?) was (one of the earlier posts): Blood cooked to perfection with wheat and spices, then dried out to make it into a bread spread type of thing. Other one could be the small pieces of cow's stomach cooked into a soup. These come from Poland.

Rocky Mountain Oysters - Colorado is a land-locked state so these aren't the seafood sort of oysters. These are the testicles of cattle from the spring roundups. The bull calves are treated to a simple operation to remove their testicles which in ranching days were thrown in the fire used for heating the branding irons until they were done. Then they were skinned and eaten as is.

Today the preferred method of preparing mountain oysters is to soak them in cold salt water for a while, then remove the skin and slice into manageable size, roll in seasoned cornmeal or flour and deep fry. Lots of folks swear by them or say they will put hair on your chest.

A big tradition in Maryland is eating soft-shell crabs. Basically they catch some of the crabs when they are young and haven't developed a hard shell, then bread them and deep fry them. You eat the whole thing (usually in a sandwich). They're pretty tasty, only I'm allergic to them (figured that out the second time I ate them and my tongue and lymph nodes swelled up http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/dizzy.gif )

wanna try Indonesian delicacies?

Torpedo Kambing: male goat genital (kambing means goat, pronounced kaambeeng). It's barbecued on coconut coal (adds aroma), tastes uniquely sweet and tender. Served on bamboo skewer wih rice and sweet soy sauce or sweet peanut sauce. A different name of it is Sate Torpedo (saataeh, means bbq) yummm http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Laron Goreng: crispy fried insect. I think this one is suppose to be mildly salty. Laron (pronounced laarohn) is a tropical insect that can be easily found flying around lamps at night. Goreng (gohrang) means fried.

Oseng Lidah: thinly sliced cow tounge and fried with sweet soy souce, essential herbs, garlic and green pepper. cooked on low temp about an hour to make the sliced tounge very tender, served on rice. Lidah (leedaah) means tounge, Oseng (ohsang) means frying with herbs

Gule Otak: cow brain curry. Indonesian curry is unique since it is cooked using coconut milk and local herbs that only available in the region. Tastes spicy, mildly salty, and tender. Served on rice. Gule (goolay) means curry otak (ohtaak)means brain

Enjoy http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

There is certain dish which exist in both M'sia and S'pore but is known in different names. However,in general both M'sia and S'pore crusine share the same names only difference version in terms of some unique ingredians or way of preparation.

Ever tried Roti Prata ( Known as Roti Chanai in M'sia)? Its an Indian Muslim dish which look similar to Pizza in preparation although Prata dun hav pepperoni, mushrooms magaretta...and its cook over a large hot pan which has a flat overall surface.

For your info, Tulang is not found in a Malay food stall but in an Indian Muslim food stall ( although the dish name is in Malay ). That may explain why your girlfriend may not be familiar to this crusine. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif

SE Pennsylvania.

Hoagies. These are sandwiches on steroids. They do not bear even a passing resemblance to what is served in a Subway fastfood restaurant. They must be made on Amoroso rolls or they are just called subs.

Scrapple. I would compare this to finely ground up haggis that is compressed to the point where it is in the shape of a meatloaf that can be sliced, fried, and drizzled with syrup.

Mangos. Central PA's version of the green pepper. Not sure if they know about the fruit mango.

Did somebody say chicken feet. Its one of my favourates I prefer them steamed in a red sauce, its the type served as dim sum. The chicken feet salad you mentioned could be steamed chicken feet with bones (and claws) extracted and dipped in this sweet and sour sauce with lots of chilli, garlic and onions. served cold, yummy too. Anybody been to Taiwan, they serve almost any part of a duck, chicken, cow and lamb(some say puppies) on a stick. Either BBQ or deep fried. Never tried the goose necks and goose tongues but i ever had the most delicious fried chicken on a stick. I kept buying it as i past any roadside stall that sold it, that was until somebody told me it was chicken backside. sigh..... Food glorious food

I love sea urchins. when I was a little boy one of my favorite things to do, and wouldn't mind doing again, was diving into the ocean, grabbing sea urchins, of course you had to be careful because of the spikes, coming back to the beach, cutting them open with a knife, sprinkling lemon on them and eating them right there. I've had them in sushi restaraunts too. i believe they are called uni.

Leverpostej: Not really a dish but something you put on bread to eat as Smørrebrød. It is made of chopped cowliver, very finely chopped onions (you can't find hem really), spam and seasoning of salt, pepper and some other stuff. It is then baked in an oven until it has a darkened surface. It sounds absolutely horrible but it takes better than you can imagine given the stuff in it. I wonder how I can eat liver... *shudders*

Sausages: Pig/cowmeat stuffed into its own intestines... ohh... it is not exclusive for Denmark, but it is still the worst possible insult for the animal. Can you imagine being killed then stuffed into your own anus? Yup that is the way to go. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Flæskesvær: Pigskin with a layer of fat still on it deepfried. Then put in salt for some time to pull out all the moisture. Eaten as a snack. Oddly enough it tastes salty.

Sylte: Pighead- and pigtoemeat, mixed up in gelatinous jelly so it looks like small pieces of meat in jelly. Tates bad enough for me to stay away.

And here we have a swedish dish.

Surströmming: Herring laid in a can with some bacteria. Then canned and not opened until the can begins to bulge. Stink so bad you can smeel it all over the neighbourhood if a guy is eating it. Possibly that is the reason it is mostly eaten in the far north (sparsely populated).
