well, I'm 36 and I bought MTW because I was interested in getting a PC game that didn't require me to have the fast fingers I had when I was in my teens and playing Intellivision. The last game I had bought before MTW was the RPG oriented Eye of the Beholder back in the early/mid 90s. I like the strategy aspect and being able to build things to get certain things

Thank goodness for the last two posts-- I was beginning to feel ancient http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif

I'm 43 also. Started out with all the Avalon Hill boardgames and can remember all of us praying that the distant future would have computerized wargames. Prefer the turn-based/hybrid games over classic RTS-- just could never get past the click-fest aspects. Have had some fun in FPS deathmatches with my teenage son-- although he generally wallops me. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

It's really great to see the younger crowd engaged with games like this

*Shrug* Might as well post.

I'm 16. I play a lot of computer games, but I've never been really into clickfest RTSes and I don't play FPS games that much. I've always loved turn-based strategy games though, along with tactical squad-based (ooh, JA2...) and some RPGs. This heavily influences my playing style for M:TW... I play mostly single player now, where I can control the pace of battles. When I get bored with SP I expect to move on to playing multiplayer.

the commodore 64 was the leading console many many many years ago. Its games were in magnetic cassetes and you had to wait ages for them to load. It also had basic installed in it. Its name comes from the fact that it had 64 WHOLE KB of RAM http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif if you go to ebay and make a search you can see one. Ahhh the young ones , they do not know their gaming history anymore :/

ras, the C64 was not a console, but a real computer. It only supported text resolution of 40 charaters per line on the screen

Loading, please wait...

but it had built in synthesizer chips and could do sprites (graphics) - quite impressive for the time. BTW, the 64 in the name

Loading, please wait...

stood for 64KB of RAM. That's right you youngsters - kilobytes. It was quite an amazing machine (it ROCKED ) and shattered the price barrier at the time. It made computers affordable to all. One of its few drawbacks was

Loading, please wait...

its notoriously slow 5 1/4 floppy drive. There was no such thing as a hard drive for the C64.

I could tell you about the VIC-20 (Very Inexpensive Computer), the predecesor to the C64, but you'd never believe me. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

alright since were, being honest, never had a c-64, or a vic 20, but i remember them, my first actual pc, was an apple 2c, with 128k of memory, and a single 5.25 floppy and a crappy green monitor. my first games were ultima 2, wizardry the original, and f-15 strike eagle... back in the old days, when bypassing copy protection meant owning a paper hole puncher... and preventing overwites, meant sticking a piece of tape over the notch... scary thing is i still had it as of five years ago, never used it, but it was in storage. flood destroyed it though, that would have been fun to break it out and see if any of my old programs workes..

I gave you rule #1 for surviving the teens. Here's Trick #1a for getting gramps on your side forever. Pose a small problem to him (I can't decide which game to get, for example). Pause. Look him in the eye. Say What do you think, Grandpa?. Nothing else. Just wait. It might take a minute. But you've just planted a seed. You'll soon have a friend and mighty defender for life.

BTW, if he does tell you what he thinks, just say Thanks even if you disagree. Just Thanks and walk away.

I'm 21 and I had a Commodore 64. A few years ago i ran an emulator and checked out some old games for novelty. I have to say I think the quality of programming is really impressive taking into count what they had to use to create them. I had a tape deck while my friend had a floppy drive, mine made up by for that though by having a small stack of cartridges which would load very fast by comparison.

The long loading time was not a complete drawback, there was plenty of time to play other games or watch some tv, get some food or even ride to the shop if it was a particularly big game.

Cazbol

My first one was the ZX Spectrum and boy did I love it. Load times were only about 5 minutes. After the screeching sound of the loading had almost driven my father insane for a year or two, I discovered that I didn't need to connect the ear plug and thus didn't need to play that noise. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/shock.gif Some of the major games were The Manager (better graphics than Championship Manager http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif ), Hobbit and Elite. Still have it and used it for a few days about 6 or 7 years ago. Worked great.

Having reached the respectable age of 32 and being able to provide for myself I now feed my gaming addiction relentlessly in my gaming room at home, where I play all day long, all the time every day when I'm not forced to do something else, like going to work. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif Not having kids is just so great

I game that I remember was groundbreaking for the Amiga was Populous. During the summer hol's I'd play it endlessly ...

... Populous: The Beginning is still, IMHO, one of the finest strategy games ever to be released for the PC. I still play it on occasion. After 4 years the Graphics/gameplay are still fresh - and if you don't have it ...

... you are REALLY missing something.

I must say I'm suprised at the demographic around here. I've been a few other gaming message boards and most people tend to be in their teens.

Anyway I'm 25. The Commdore 64 was my first experience with a computer. My dad had one, and I used to mess with it all the time. The only thing I ever did on though was play games. The loading times were a major pain, especially with games that had more than 1 disk.

One that I can remember was D&D: Pool of Radiance. There were 4 disks and you needed to swap like crazy while travelling to different areas. You spent half your time while playing it waiting for it load. Still had a blast though.

The Atari 2600 was my first experience with gaming.

I thought, at 25, I was gonna be one of the youngsters, its interesting to read the ages of people who you play against all the time, completely shatters your vision of what they look like.
As for computer games, the first game that got me completely hooked, apart from paperboy and jet set willy, was Dungeon Master. Still an absolute classic - nothing like turning the corner and seeing 4 Giant Spiders staring at you, my heart has never fully recovered.

First computer I played was a C64. Then an Atari, Amiga, PII, PSX, PS2 and PIV.

Preferred multiplayer games (still do) Spy vs Spy fave all time. Knights of the Sky was a great game if anybody played that.

Did anybody ever try Dailly Thompson's on C64 (would anybody admit to it??)

I'm only 14.

I can't say my first computer, but my first strategy game was Command and Conquer. I spent hours just watching my GDI guys on the first level, wondering how to move them and thinking Wow, they look like real army dudes. Eventually I found out how to move them one at a time, and later, I learned how to lasso. I never read the instructions or any sort of thing, which I learned a lesson from. Obviously I've changed since then.

My first game, for those of you who want to know, was Mega Race.

I’m 36 and play as much as my wife and two kids allow. I don’t know how many times my wife as asked me how late I was up on a Friday night playing MTW and I reply about 2 a.m. The truth is generally I saved the game as the kids started to stir in their beds at 6:30 and quickly when down stairs to put a pot of coffee on because I knew it was going to be a long day.

Mmmmm... Commodore, my favorite. From the PET/CBM through the Amiga series. http://www.mergetel.com/~blitz/C64/cpeople.html

Maybe the spreads should include 31-40, 41-50, 51-60, over 60. That would also be interesting. Just a suggestion.

Anyone else ever play Denaris? I think it got banned shortly after release for its similarity to R-Type. It was such a good game, I still occasionally light the wick in the old C64 and have a go.
Amiga next - Populous, Speedball 2, The Last Ninja, Cannon Fodder, Player Manager, Frontier - a veritable golden age.

Oh yes, I have played Dailly Thompson's... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Jabberwock surely she lets you spend at least a couple of hours in your cave per day http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif

After seeing me without any cave time most GFs usually relent and let me http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif I do wonder why I'm single at the moment though http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

I can get my frontier fix on my PC these days of course but Speedball 2 and Cannon Fodder still get dusted off along with the Amiga ever now and again.

Daily Thompson's - lol I broke a couple of joysticks playing that game. As a young man the ability to furiously move a joystick from side to side and bash buttons come in handy http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

Edit:

Not sure if I ever posted in this one before so for completeness I'm 23. Not a bad age for a Monkey.

my first computer was an Atari, can't remember the model, but it was top of the line,
It had the absolute latest green screen, meaning a monochrome but with green text instead of white,
and a whopping 16K of RAM, thats 16 kilobytes,

truly a powerfull machine

no?

I am 16 in 5 months (woohoo) and have already been disenchanted with life. I might become a lawyer. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

I'm 20 and the first PC I encountered was an XT/AT at 5. My first 'game' is the typing practise(If you can call that a game) http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

My first real game---Simcity with graphic add- ons would have to wait till I'm 8 and got a 386.
