I just got this game, and am having alot of fun playing it. One thing that bothers me though is the huge amount of monitor resolution switching it does... does this happen to anyone or anyway to stop it?? I have it set to 1024x768 for both strategic and battle map. It switches when I start the program, after intro movies, after a move to map, before every battle, back after every battle....
Thanks

Mine is at the default and it runs perfectly with no switching so it peob best to keep it at that

Hrm that's the thing, I did have it on the defaults when I first started, it still switched resolutions every minute or so....

Hello sharp. Welcome to the Entrance Hall. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

I'm not sure what is going on there but I only notice it as the game loads.

Welcome aboard http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Did you check your settings ? I bet you did.
I don't really get it though, if the resolutions are the same for strategic and battle map then why switch ?

Did you change it and then click test ?

That's the thing, I had exact same resolutions for map/battle, I can understand the switch at beginning for intro or whatever, but every turn... it's really annoying. What should it do when I say test?? It just switches the screen, turns black, then goes back to the options menu.

I'm wondering whether you're talking about the display of the Windows taskbar between different parts of the game. I can't exactly remember the pattern (since I've come to ignore it), but I seem to remember that there are two taskbars displayed. One is a shorter one, and it is displayed above the longer one. I'm not sure I would describe that as monitor resolution switching, so I'm not sure if that is what you are talking about. I'm not sure why MTW does the double taskbar thing, since other games don't do that.

I mean like, it switches from 800x640 etc. to something else, because my monitor does a click whenever it does that, so it does that when I start up, it switches resolutions before a battle, and switches after a battle even though both strategic/battle maps are set to the same resolution.

what shld occur is that you see the Medieval name on the goldish background and a load bar. this is just a test to see if your video is working right.

if you dont see that then i'd suspect vid card drivers or directx. you need at least directx 8.1 to play the game correctly. if you dont have 8.1 or better on your system, i believe there is a copy on the game cd.

for your drivers, post your operating system, your vid card type and which drivers you're using, or, if you're familiar with all this, try a different set.

also, run dxdiag and do all the tests. make sure you hit the button at the start, once dxdiag is up and running, that says 'save all information'. this may help us down the road if you're still having troubles.

My ViewSonic Q71 does that for every game that I play. Whenever it need to change or refresh screen resolution, it does a very loud click. For Mtw, it would click 2 or 3 times before starting the game's intro then show the menu. It clicks whenever the screen change to and from menu - trategy map - battle map.

i think you will find it is because all the menus etc.. are based with a 800x600 resolution, maybe this includes the load screen .. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

Yeah. I've got a Viewsonic, too. Not sure if it is the Q71. It's 19. It does a short display of the taskbars before showing the menu and a short display of the taskbars again before beginning (or loading) a campaign. I don't think I get a click sound though. That would be annoying. If my monitor starts clicking, I'll be checking out the new drivers.

I'm losing track of all the settings required for MTW. So the battles/campaigns are really 800 x 600? I thought that 1024 x 768 resolution was recommended.

Too bad the developers didn't figure out a way to determine a person's resolution. Then they could have used different versions of the graphics in order to avoid all of this.

Hrm, well when I tested it just turned black, then switched back.... so I guess I may have a problem there. I'll check it out, I haven't updated my driver's ever (got my computer last July) so maybe I need to, I know I have the correct Direct X, just drivers may be out of date. If I can't fix the monitor switching... well hopefully I'll get used to it ^^ it's just quite annoying right now. Thanks for the help

welcome.

and let me know how the new drivers work and if that does or doesnt fix the problem. it always helps when folks post how they did fix things, and not just how they broke them :)

Updated to 43.25 (something like that), I was right, by driver's were over a year old... like 20 something, but it didn't help with the problem, but it's ok I guess I just have to put up with it... at least it's not weird crazy crash like with Evil Islands http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

Good thought Krae but we EH mods have to sprinkle a little Senior Patron pixie dust on sharp first. Now where did I put that powder bag...
