What use are inquisitors? Whenever I send one over to place an enemy on trial for heresy I get a really small chance for success Yet the Ai seems to send lone inquisitors into my domain and burn general after general...

What factors influence an inquisitor's chance for success? How is best to use them?

i too suffered from this for ages.
I had a 5 star grand inquisitor, and still the chances of burning anybody was 0-10%. But then i looked in other areas, and found i had a 100% chance of turning them into a crispy critter. And these are on similar nobles with only 1 level of piety. Then i found it out it is largely to do with the zeal in a province. The one with 100% success chance had about a 76% level of zeal, while the other had a 0% level of zeal.
So before you start lighting your matches, you have to leave the inquistitor in the province for a while to build up zeal, well it works for me anyway http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Inquisitors increase Zeal? I thought if you leave them in a province for ages they start an inquisition and the zeal drops? (or doe they increase zeal only when preaching?)

When they preach they increase the zeal of the population. Hence once whipped into action the chances of a successful inquisition are increased. The zeal will decrease if he starts burning the populous however.

So dogmeat has it pretty much correct. Other things that influence this include the governor of the province, his piety and and zeal effecting V&V's.

Thanks for the input, I'll have to look into these things. (I guess I should rotate inquisitors around so they don't stay around long enough start an inquisition.)

Anyway thanks all. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Any bishop/cardinal in the same province as your target also lowers your chance of success.

Also: A high star Inquisitor is a great way to train an assasin. just grab some no star assasins and try to kill a 5 star inquisitor. 3 of them will likely fail but the fourth should end up with 4 stars.

Emperor:

This was from an old thread, but I tried it and it seems to work. Send two Inquisitors out in front of a Crusade (one immediately ahead, the other further in advance of the Crusade along the route you plan to take) in Christian provinces.

They will increase Zeal, which seems to increase the number of soldiers that sign up for your Crusade as it passes thru.

or . . .

Make a stack of perverts and other weak V&V generals and leave 'em alone in a province with an Inquisitor. He may take a Good Runner or other undesirable off your hands without any chance of you getting the blame.

I just had the leader of the italians burn along with his heir... sadly he had one more son who I couldn't burn, but my grand inquisitor is doing well around Rome and italy now.

My ultimate task is to burn the pope as a heretic http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Excommunicate this

Sweet. I realy have tried to burn the pope, the weasling little bugger. Every time I attack him I get excommunicated. Little rascal. What gives?
I had a spy look at his personal diary too and he turned out to be an atheist. Didn't improve my chances of burning him at the stake though.

Yeah I had problems burning an Atheist heir... Is it a bug or something because even with 100% zeal and a 5 star grand inquisitor, I couldn't burn him. And after the trial he was a Devout Atheist (work that one out)

In the end I sent 6 star Guy of Gisborne after him... that soon took care of him (more than one way to crack an egg)

Sadly I Couldn't burn the Pope in my game, he always seemed to have a high Piety stat (as in perfect) funny because until I started burning people he always had a low stat. AI must have know what I was trying to do

If anyone does manage to burn the pope as a heretic, please let us know The pope must be a heretic, because he can't see my God-given right to crush other Catholic factions...

burning the pope lol http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

well yes i find inquistors annoying especially when i play as the spanish killing 3 of my six star generals isnt nice and getting excommunicated also isnt nice but beating the stuffing out of the pope and knocking back every attempting assault on rome is more than pleasureable

I wish the special pieces got virtues and vices, or at least the ones who have 3+ stars.

I would really like to see a pyromanic inquistor, oops he burnt that nasty HRE general but the Germans have demanded compensation for the buildings in burnt down in the process.

A assassin with the 'No children, no women' Virtue/Vice (Virtue for him, vice for his ruler) as he won't attack princesses or heirs (not until princes are over 18), also a better counteragent at guarding princesses.

A emissary who is better at getting princesses to marry into the family.

(Also would like to see instead of being just able to ask the king for a potential prince to marry, but the ability for a princess to approach the pope to find a prince and have the refusal of such a union a possible excommunication).

And for the record I like sending my inquistors to Rome to get out of hand there.
