I have a few questions about M:TW. I've been playing it for a pretty long time now but haven't utilized many strategies (missing manual).

1. How do you trade with other nations? (Both harbor and land. I read about people establishing trade routes, etc)

2. How do you bring in reinforcements? (Whenever I mark the spot and a flag appears, clicking the send in reinforcements button does nothing even though it tells me I have a certain number of reinforcements ready).

3. Ships - What is the point of them?

4. Can I offer an alliance without marrying off one of my daughters?

5. Can I marry off one of my sons?

6. Is it possible to move artillery around before deploying it in the 3d battle view? (Normally the computer just picks a spot for the artillery)

7. How do I replenish units? (My king is always by himself heh)

Thanks in advance http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

1.) You need ships in the sea zones
2.) Hum, someone maybe can answer that one
3.) Establish trade routes and allow you to conduct sea assualts
4.) Yes, Send an emissary
5.) Anyone know this?
6.) Yes, only in the pre-battle deployment
7.) The king should automatically get new knights, for othe runits you must drop them into the unit training window in a provence that can train that unit type

1 Ships need to be in every sea zone between your province that has trade goods, a port, and a trade post and another province of someone who is not at war with you(you also can't trade with rebels).

2 You can only have 16 units on the battlefield at once. You need to withdraw a unit before you can bring on a new unit. Just click the unit you want to withdraw and press CTRL-W. (I've noticed some high valor units don't like to withdraw, they will go to the edge of the map and linger)

3 Ships are for trade and eliminating enemy trade. You can also use them to invade other provinces by sea. But, be careful, usually after the battle the port is destroyed and they are stuck there until you build a new port. Also other countries are more likely to attack a single ship so stack several when near other ships.

4 Drop an emissary on a factions king and it will ask you if you want to propose an alliance. I haven't had much luck getting alliances after the first few years.

5 No idea how to initiate it, but sometimes factions will offer up a bride. I am in my first Christian campaign and I got offered one marriage but none since. If you are muslim, marriages are taken care of automatically.

6 You can choose where to deploy any units when you are defending or attacking a castle, keep, etc....

7 Click on the stack that the worn down unit is in so you can see the units listed at the bottom of the screen. Then click on the button to create new units, then click on the depleted unit and drag it into the create unit queue. I was stumped on this too until I saw this elswhere in the forum.

There are some pretty good suggestions in the faqs and stuff in the first few posts in this forum and the main hall. Good Luck.

1. You need tradable goods in a province, build a trading post, and have a chain of ships to another faction who you are not at war with. An enemy ship in the same sea zone will break the chain and prevent trading
2. After you click the reinforcement button you should see the next in line unit appear to the left of your unit symbols at the bottom of the screen. It may take a while for the unit to march to the flag site
3. Trade and they allow amphibious invasions
4. Yes, use an emissary on a king or another emissary
5. Yes, use an emissary on a foreign princess
6. Yes, if you are defending just select and click where you want it. If you are attacking I think there is a way to cycle artillery through your additional units (reinforcements) and then be able to place it where you want to
7. Yes, on screen where you determine what unit you are going to train next. Just drag and drop the unit you need to replenish (or give weapon / amour improvements) as long as the province has the ability to build that type of unit

Check out the table of contents in the Main Hall, there are posts that will answer all of these questions in much greater detail and accuracy. Have fun playing.

ExistenZi:

The others have provided good answers to your questions. I would add to #3 - what's the point of ships, that having your ships off your coast prevents invasion by sea. Just as you can invade others by sea (as mentioned), so can the AI. Having a fleet off your coast prevents this. Use the V key to determine which waters are friendly (green) and which are not (red).

and to #6, placing artillery: you can click on the arty unit that you wish to place, then click on where you want it to go - hold and drag to aim (so you can hold and drag from left to right just like with a regular unit - the crew will stretch out in a line and when you release the arty will appear, somewhat aimed).

Thanks a lot for the replies. Unfortunately the table of contents links are all broken. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Another question: Can I assign my general to a different unit? (IE Switch him from a horse unit to a Spearman unit)

Unfortunately no. And it is a good idea to be very protective of him in battles. Keep his unit out of the fray unless you really need it to win.

What you do with your general depends on your playing style. I usually use my general vigorously, if possible always leading the attack. In SP I tend to get away with it very often, actually ver well indeed.

In MP I lose my general 50% of the time, but usually win the battle anyway.

For your king you cannot retrain the unit, but you can train another unit and then merge the two to replenish your king unit.

For bold, successful generals, you can retrain their units. For example, you have a unit of Royal Knights trained in Early era, now it's High era. You can retrain your Early Royal Knights and they will now be High era.

Another question:

How can I make missile units melee even if they still have some ammo left? (Ctrl-click doesn't work)

hi eXistenZi,

no one seems to have addressed the problem of inland provinces with tradeable goods.
From what i've read here at the .org, no need to bother building trade posts or upgrading these, u'll never get real money in these provinces http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif , if u do u'll just be throwing ur florins away.
Any1 correct me if i'm wrong...

Thanks for the answer ^

Another one for ya http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

How do you merge units? ie make a 2 40 man cav units into 1 80-man.

Separate the units you want to combine from other units so that you have two one-unit stacks. Drag and drop one unit onto another. I have found that this works about 50% of the time, I don't know why it doesn't work the rest of the time, but it may have to do with differences in unit valor or upgrades. Also, I don't think you can do this if the general of one of the units has a title.

Edit - You also can't go over the max number of men that this type of unit allows

Ahhh.

Brace yourselves....another question:
Can a province make use of sea trade routes even if it doesn't have a port (but has a merchant)?

Re: trade. Ports are required. You have to have a port to accept trade through shipping.

Re: combining groups. Pick 'em up and drop 'em together is one way. Another way is to have them in the same overall group and drag from one group to another. If they are the same type, there will be a tranfer. Sometimes there is a 100% transfer. Sometimes all but one soldier transfers.

Its pretty tough to load barrels of wine, crates of linen, and boxes of spice without port facilities. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif For trade you need tradeable good(s), a port, a trading post, and a line of ships through non-blockaded waters

Another one hehe:

How do jihads/crusades work?

I made 3 jihads and they just sit in my province. One of them says its to defend the province (england just called a crusade on me) while the other ones are supposed to be offensive...

ichi

Ex: Most of this is explained in the manual or in other threads, but . . .

Crusades are Christian. Once you make one grab the cross and drag it around the map. Those provinces that are suitable targets (non-Christian or excommed Christians) light up. Drop the cross on the province you want to send your Crusade to. After you drop it it disappears, but if you go back to the province where it was created there will be a crusader army. Pick up the crusader army and you will see provinces light up. These are legal to move the crusade through.

You are limited in the route your crusade takes (usually the shorest, most direct route to the target) while the AI seems to be able to wander around.

As you move through you will gain (or sometimes lose) men from the crusade. This is a great way to thin the ranks of your opponent. Send an Inquisitor out in front to raise Zeal, increasing recruitment into the crusade. You can also just let the crusade sit for a while, it does not have to keep moving, although this seems to increase desertion rates.

You can also supplement a crusader army by dropping units on it (these become part of the crusade). The crusade lasts until you take the target province (or until the target province becomes Christian again). Then all of the units in the crusade become regular units again.

Jihads work the same, except a Jihad can only be used to recapture a province lost to the infidels.

You can get certain units (Knights of Santiago, for example) by building crusades, where they cannot be trained in the normal fashion.

A good place to go for many, many answers is the Table of Contents (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=7;t=3823). You'll most likely get your answer much faster there.
