GSD = Game State Diverged

I can usually play 2 or 3 games before i get the GSD,
tonight Gregoshi, Mithandir and myself played a series of 3v3, the first went well, then Gregoshi dropped from the second game, he had to force a reboot,
from then on we simply could not play another game together,
2 attempts at games later Mithandir quit out and reset fauna/flora - still no joy,
GSD just after battle started,
Then I quit, and restarted the game.
No More Problems

It seems, and this will take more testing to confirm, that when One player has a problem everybody has a problem.

So when you encounter a game that ends with GSD, everybody should restart Medieval, if you can then reboot, restart Medieval and then log back in to gamespy.

Now i'm going to guess, but possibly a GSD has an effect on every machine in that game, weird, and it really should not occur, (truly it should NOT be possible for it to happen),,
But tonight was the second night everybody eventually had to restart before we could play together again after a GSD...

there you go, my 2 cents worth...

My own theory, which I cannot prove, is that when you exit a game in any way other than a normal way, i.e. you get the final victory/defeat screen and all joiners exit before the host exits, your game does not get properly reinitialized or reset if you will. My own techique now is to restart MTW after every game that I host, and after any abnormal exit as a joiner. I also find that I have to at least relog even on a normal exit to refresh the screen. I do not find that rebooting the machine is necessary.

agreed puzz. as long as i get a normal exit iu am ok for another, usually without reloging. when the host drops the game i get a variety of occurences from the going to the foyer(one that says internet games, and check foro updates) to MTW crashing out.

hosting is another headache and i always have to relog after one. i have had the post-unit-selection screen crash to desktop after everybody readies up.

i have never robooted the machine either

although rebooting costs me nothing, and takes about 20 seconds, but thats just me and my hyper slim machine (along with a firewall that i log onto the net through, if i crash the link to my isp is not lost)

But restarting the game seems to do the trick. Thats makes life a little easier...

====edit====
just reread and noticed host has to leave last? Puzz, when will you be online and we can test that - might explain a few oddities...

Yeah if host doesn't leave last then the other players that are still there get dropped, and don't see the stats screen. I have gotten to the point where I relog after almost every game.

Ah, that explains why I didn't see the stats screen today. I was beginning to think I imagined that screen from earlier days. Thanks for that tidbit Nobunaga0611

I must admit that it is highly anoying to me and my friends that we more or less have to relog after every battle if we want to chat properly with each other.

Does anybody know why it is so?

I dont normally get the game state diverged message. That is an out of sync message which normally only happens (to me) if someone has been playing SP before logging on to MP.

As far as the disconn after hosting, or crash to "internet games" screen after a game--I cant say what is causing it. It happens much more often when I host, (about 75%)...some days more than others.

I think it must be a problem with the handshake between the host server and the gamespy server. I dont know.

Its annoying but liveable.

annoying but livable, very true,
perhaps if we can determine what we have to do to recreate these problems at will then maybe the dev types will figure out what needs to be tweaked for the next patch/addon...

a reliable workaround, like relogging into gamespy after each battle will help us till that glorious day...

Kraxis is talking about the greyed out problem,
many users remain "ghosted"/"greyed-out" when returning to the foyer from a battle...

Yeah I get dropped about 75-80% of the times that I host as well. So in order for many people to re-create this problem....all they have to do is host a game http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif . Whenever theres a problem with anyone quitting after the host, or other issues such as this, it seems to me that other people who didn't even have the problems still might come back 'grey'. I've watched games end, and have seen the names re-appear, or not be grey anymore, and it usually only happens when theres no problems in that game. Also, long games seem to do this as well. If I'm in a game for more than 20 minutes, I almost never come back without having to relog in order to do any private chatting.

Play in kneeling position in front of the computer will show respects to it. Maybe it will help. Don't forget to bow from time to time. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

heh.. i would love to see the way you play when you kneel... like your replay methinks you are taking on the whole joan of arc role rather fittingly
