Recently when I've been hosting games in the Ravens Nest, I've been experimenting on fun maps to play. One of these maps we found to be very enjoyable, at least in a 3v3, was Kalka. 3 bridges where one lets you pour some inf across before the enemy can reach it. Needless to say this turns hectic at once.
Now meself, Weilian n Basil ( the all cav maniac http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif ) assaulted this map 3v3 and pondered doing it a 4v4, where it looks like the front left can deploy on the other side. Not http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif
When I host a 4v4 on Kalka the game crashes. Its happened twice, and its got to be some deployment zone error thing.
Anyone else experienced something similar? Other maps maybe?
Regards,
did wanyone take war machines on this map? ther is two reasons i can think of this happening.
the first is the textures are all allocated to the max, so a war machine would tip it to crash (though i doubt this is the case)
the other and more likely reason i suspect is the river. running thorugh the map it actually limits where people can deploy, and in a 4v4 deployment being very close or on the river could cause ome major problems.. ill go look at the map and post if i think it to be different from this explanation

Water and multiplay ...not a nice combination at the best of times. Deployment zones can leave some units milling around as they are theoretically standing where they are not allowed to. This can cause problems like being unable to deploy that unit as it seems hung up. Models like houses, rocks etc can have the same affect. I remember one of the stunning 'Alex' maps of Shogun had a rock on the left flank attackers deployment zone. If you moved your army as a group, one unit was left behind and you could only move it by individual command, but in these cases mentioned the game still starts. I can only assume that MTW is more fussy than Shogun, I recently tried to make a Medieval 'Ob_River Crossing' ( anyone who played it will remember the fun ) In that map, a series of tributaries, the water was passable, MTW editor was having none of it. As to Kalka, I was unhappy to find it depicted as a river defence anyway because it was not. Jebe and Subedei turned to face the enemy when they reached the Kalka river. I made my own map 'O_Kalka' with a view to more historical accuracy...I had some fun here too. When I tried to place a river behind defenders deployment zone the editor went awol. It added a bridge and there were men on the wrong side, right side and even both sides. I scrubbed that and made the back of the map the river's edge. Oops, sorry can't do that, water on edge of map becomes the sea and at the back of the map?? Defenders have nowhere to run....Back to the drawing board. I compromised in the end and tried to make the back of the map 'look' like a rivers edge...The end result is exactly what I was trying to create and it is a beautiful map to play so I'm happy.
My advice to anyone making maps is to leave out the models altogether as they only cause problems with unit movement. Same advice when hosting too, choose a map with limited models.
Bye the way, if you want fun defending Kalka try mine. I know you will enjoy it

Yes 'Farm Village' and 'Pagoda City' were similar Alrowan but units just can't move freely enough between the buildings so you always get a bugged game

ypu, i know that exact error, hence why my acre map has main throughfares and buildings far apart enough to minimalise congestion

My Prince, Orda.
Thanks for the feedback and map suggestions. I'm a great fan of custom maps, and got your maps downloaded. Part from Kenchi_TGI, PG_Stormer n Sinan, I've not met too many who use these maps. I'd love to play you both on some though, hehe.
It's easter time hereabouts this week tho, so no playing MTW online for me on my mom's pre-war PC http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif
I'll be back.

ErikJansen, I'm glad you like the maps, like you I am a fan of custom maps and the interesting strategy changes they provide. With this in mind I have made a new map pack. It contains a total of 26 large maps, all created with MP in mind. I must apologise in advance for the listing of Mizuland maps...there are 20 of them and I numbered them 1 - 20. On reflection I wish I had numbered them 001, 002 etc but I never really intended to make 20 http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
Clan Takiyama has tried them out in big games and they are very nice. There are one or two fun maps just for a laugh. If you download them just overwrite the maps you have already.
Ok I'll just go and upload them

I'm just a happy chappie http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Keep up the good work boys.
Oh btw, can you confirm that Kalka is unplayable in a 4v4? I'm not about to host any more games on it until I get that sorted...

The game can have problems with fitting deployment areas onto river maps. It tries to pull all the deployment areas back to the same side of the river, and if it can't do this, it crashes.
If you want to play a river map in 4v4 pick one where the river is in the middle of the map.

Thanks for that clarification Longjohn. My main reason for wanting to host a 4v4 battle on Kalka would be the possibility of one attacker deploying far bank, having established somekind of bridgehead, hehe, on the other side.
Interesting tactical scenario http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Pity about the deployment thingie tho, but Kalka's allright in a 3v3 too http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
