I've played two campaigns on expert, one with Shimazu(1530), and the other with Takeda(1530).The old blitzkreig strategy that worked so well in the original STW,ala Maltz, is not a viable strategy early in the campaign anymore.Leave a province unmanned,or lightly defended, and the ronin will jump you every time.Leave an important port with training facilities ungarrisoned and you will be port attacked.Shimazu(1530) was fairly easy because all you had to deal with early were ronin.Takeda(1530) was tough,I offed Hojo in Sagami in the second season, and then it was very slow going. It is better to keep just enough troops to defend yourself early, and tech up with armor, weapons, honor etc...and then retrain your original troops.Unless your replacing men in a depleted unit,it doesn't cost any koku to retrain a unit to increase armor, weapons,or honor. So when you have bad harvests and no or little koku, retrain if you can. When you take a province that has buildings you don't need, demolish them and use the extra koku on what you do need.No sense in having extra teahouses, tranquil gardens, churches if your not going christian etc...If you do decide to go christian make sure you have plenty of shinobi and priests available, because you will have rebellion problems. If your rival goes christian, send in the shinobi's and watch the fun. It's a whole new game now,and I'm loving it. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Yes indeed-- the new difficulties presented by the more historical Sengoku Jidai full campaigns make conquering more difficult and ashigaru more viable-- almost to the point of realism. I still think these issues should be dealt with thru a comprehensive change in the fundamental structure of the game in these areas, but the historical full campaigns are a definite and undeniable improvement! 1.5 thumbs up!

Totally agree the new campaign starting in 1530(?) is great. Suddenly Shimazu is easy and Hojo and Uesugi are tough with all of the competition around them.

Just did Oda starting with one province and it was fun. The major competition was Shimazu. I had one of those 'You missed a heir and Imagawa has arisen with nine provinces' things. Was great.

Thumbs up to the designers as they have definitely helped the SP types. Far more options now.
