View Full Version : Unit sectors ...

All of you must have observed that, once you order one (or more) of your units to attack, they all head for the middle of the enemy formation; I find this very frustrating, as sometimes you just want to hit the flank or, worse, if you have more units attacking the same enemy unit, you would very much like to see them not engaging in the same point.

Of course, the problem is old (at least for me, I thought of it ever since MI was announced) ... And the solution is very simple: when you click on attack, by pressing a key (like when you select the melee for the archers), the enemy unit could (virtually) split into three sectors(at least, and I think enough) ... the one you click upon it's the one your units will attack ... I think of this as to a major improvement; what do you say, CA? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

Hi prfire,

I am assuming you are new. Do you know how to use the group commands like group alt-left click or group alt-right click?

If you want to rush an opponent with your entire army many noobs just select all and double click attack on 1 unit. This bottle necks your army and makes them easy to flank and/or rear attack.

Better to group and alt-left click a point behind enemy. So your units will rush while maintaining there large wide line. As they get close to enemy lines you can then micromanage and place individual units with best matchups and also try your flanks and rear attacks. I hope I have been of help.

Yeah, if you want to hit just one part of a unit, simply drag your unit so it moves slightly past the one you want to attack, but passes through the unit

Pr has a good point here... it is something that should be looked at.

DbDis -- I don't think Pr was talking about having all his units head to the one he attacked... simply that units always attempt to engage the center mass of the other units.

As Skomath stated there are ways around this problem... (like maneuvering your unit, but not setting it to attack) but that is like putting sugar on a bad taste... it doesn't deal with the basic problem.

I see, like a thing that allows you to click on the ground under a unit u mean? That would be nice.

Yes, I'm very glad that shingenmitch2 understood my post corectly ...

I haven't yet played MP, but in SP campaigns I'm a vet I would say (finished STW on expert with all clans, all starting points, MTW on the way too) ... I know how to bring my units near the enemy in formation, and I also know the group commands, and many more, I can asure you ...

The problem is that your units, sent to attack the enemy unit, attack primarly its center ... If you are not completely in their flank, your units will always go for that point. It's quite frustrating ... I don't say that the maneuvres can't be done, just that it would make all alot easier and handy ...

I mean, I want that my unit to focus on the left flank of the enemy unit, just on that flank; if I'm not on the right, I can't do this ... Another example: I have three units in front of the enemy unit, I want that all to engage in the same time; if I just attack, they all head for the center of the enemy unit, losing the advantage of their number for a while; of course, I can send the first unit a bit to the left, the second a bit to the right, and the third in the centre, but what if that enemy unit moves a little bit to the ... lets say left ... I have to issue all those orders again ... Damn, my sugestion would solve this in no-time ...

So, I think that it is a very easy to implement and pertinent solution for a lot of tactical problems ...

I apologize I misunderstood your first post pr fire. Well I understand what your trying to say now.

And? give an opinion ...

Well, perhaps attacking a certain portion of the unit would be nice, but you should at least have to micro manage moving to the left or right of a unit for a flank attack. Perhaps a simply hot key (Maybe even the all-mighty ALT) could allow you to make your unit charge on whatever portion of the enemy unit you clicked on?

BTW, I recently found the signature box in my profile http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Yes, as I said, a hot key could ... fulfill the task ...

Here's a simple possibility -- the game already calculates and tracks all individuals within a unit... meaning that the computer is already watching all little individuals...

So... when you place your "sword/attack" cursor over an enemy unit have it actually "tag" the individual in the enemy unit that it is over... then the center mass of your unit heads to the "tagged" individual within then enemy unit.

If you tagged a peep at the end of the enemy unit, that's where ur center mass of ur unit will head...

Maybe the tagged unit changes color so u can be sure of where u selected.

dunno if that would create problems of its own, but it seems like a fairly easy thing to implement.

Hey there pr Fire, nice knowing there are ppl from Romania round here... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
About your idea now,of course,RTW definetly need this command,as well as one single attack button for all teh units selected to charge the nearest enemyes.
These would (partially tough) solve the too much micromanagement units need, this being the biggest gameplay problem, and it should be on top of CA's "to fix" list.
Apropo, era sa uit,shi eu sunt roman...asha ca bine ai venit http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif
P.S. Watch my signature http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I'm happy that everyone agrees that this is a good option to think about for CA http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Hy, Michael ... I used the Lite skin, so couldn't watch the signatures; on the other hand, I knew that you are romanian by looking at your location ...

Sorry for posting in a foreign language, its not going to become a habbit http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Quote[/b] (lonewolf371 @ April 15 2003,00:16)]I'm not sure but isn't Romania just a little bit more of a backwards country than... say... Germany? I think they're doing well in the balkans (no civil wars) but I'm not sure that they're up to the standards of the rest of Europe yet. Mind you, I've always thought Romania was a cool name for a country. Slavic peoples have the highest coolness factor in Europe.
I'm sorry, but WE ARE NOT slavs We are latins, as the french; their ancestors were the romans and gauls, ours, the romans and dacians.

Indeed, we are not as developed as Germany, mainly because of the geographical position (in the Middle Ages we were in turmoil) and because of the comunism that plagued our country and people, a regim established through the russian tanks after WWII, and confirmed at Yalta by you, the brits and americans ...

But what's your point? We weren't talking about Romania, we just established a contact between us ...

04-15-2003, 23:04
Well OK, you aren't slavs but the name still sounds cool. I asked about your country not about your relationship. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif Sorry for offending you so much, if you're offended, or if you just hate off-topic discussions. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

04-16-2003, 13:11
Oh, I'm not offended ... well, in fact, I didn't know if that was an ironic post or not ... I mean, if I would say that U.S.A. is a cool name for a country, esspecialy when you, as red-skins, are pretty serious people, you wouldn't know what to make of it ...

The name of my country comes from our roman heritage ... and no one ever had full control over us, like the gaulic-roman population conquest by the franks ... so we remained here and developed a roman dialect and ... created our own country ...

All best, I really didn't want to seem so unfriendly ...
