Just got the Warlord Edition last week and completed a full Mongol Campaign as the Mongols over the weekend, on Hard Difficulty.

The Mongol cavalry ROCKS! I had many battles with kill ratios of 10:1. MHC are very powerful and MLC are very versatile. I found that in later portions of the game I end up just using these two unit types and not bringing along any of the Korean units. (especially the Korean Guardsmen - sooooo slow) Skirmishers & Thunder Bombers were fun, but not really necessary most of the time, at least not in my case. They can be very effective when used correctly, but I found that from my experience before I could march them towards the enemy, my MHC & MLC have almost finished the job. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Preventing revolt was a challenge. I played the old way (like STW 1) where I'd have to garrison provinces (since Mongolians can't train shinobi) to keep the population quiet. But I heard that one should just keep moving. Let the people revolt and just come back later to conquer the province again, AND loot it again. More $, less worry. I think I will do this hit & run when I play Expert Level.

I guess one thing that would have been nice is more strategic elements, like spies, assassins, buildings (maybe some swordsmiths / armouries, but of course not really dojos). But I guess it'll be tricky trying to balance gameplay and historical accuracy.

If you want the strategic elements in the Mongol Campaign, play Hojo. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Yup. That's what I'm planning to do next. But it would be more fun if the Mongols get to play with some strategic toys too.

Quite right. I've said that a number of times. The Mongols are boring compared to the Hojo. They do get some nice units to play with, but they lack the intrigue which is sort of what Shogun is all about.

Besides didn't huge conquering armies usually pick up culture from whom they're attacking? You'd think that they would get to build some places to train troops after holding on to a province for 10 years!
