View Full Version : Help on getting in to my own castle?
How do you get your own men in to your castle? I get the white dot when I move them over the castle but the little buggers will never drop in? It is annoying. previously it was not a problem but I was of the opinion that if you want to upgrade a unit it needs to be in the castle. Which is why I now have a problem. I have tried it as a single unit and as an army. No luck.
thanks in advance.

You can add units to a castle garrison as long as the army your adding has been in the province 1 turn and the castle already has at least one unit in it already. If the castle is empty - you cannot drop troops in it. Also, you cannot "re-garrison" your clan leader. You also must stay below the limit of the troops the castle can garrison - extra units will still "sit outside".
However, this does not affect gameplay - the question you seem to be asking is "How do I retrain/upgrade my units?" They do not need to be in the castle. Once you build a drill dojo - just open the train unit window, select the army with the units to be trained and drag the unit from the army window on the bottom to the build que in the train unit window. This will que the units to be retrained/upgraded.
Hope this helps. Happy conquering!

If your army has been in the province one season, click on the army.At the bottom of the screen, click and drag the unit/units you want into the castle. The castle doesn't have to be garrisoned already to do this.

Does this mean that you do not lift the unit itself but the icon on the bottom of the screen? I have tried picking up the unit but can never get it to go in to the b*****y castle.
BSM, the drill dojo has nothing to do with retraining troops, you can do that without it.
The drill dojo is to "assist in rallying troops", whatever that means. I haven't built one yet, so I'm not sure that it does anything. In the manual it also hints they will enter combat in better formation.
It seems to be generally impossible to put units into your castle, but it makes not a damn bit of difference as they will go there if you tell them to in the event of an attack anyway. This has absolutely no effect on gameplay.
To upgrade units, open the training window, then select the army which the unit is in, select the unit, and just drag and drop. Interestingly, if you then cancel the retraining/upgrading, the unit will reappear in the castle.. so hey! I guess there is a way to put your units into castles, though it doesn't matter!
A note on retraining/upgrading: the retraining option is not so great, at least in comparison with upgrading. Upgrading means that you put a unit in the queue, and for no cost, regardless of whether or not the province in question has the proper training facilities for that unit type (as it would to retrain (i.e. reinforce) the unit), and voila! You get all of the armor and weapons (and very possible morale and discipline, not sure on this one) upgrades as if that unit was produced in that province! Makes one less leery of teching up a province with no iron sand, and in general provides new flexibility and new techniques for training and equipping your forces!
Anyway, my 2 cents.

Kiwi, you are correct.Don't try and pick up the army from the strategy map and drop it on the castle,it won't work.Click on the army.At the bottom of the screen the individual units appear.Click and drag the unit icon from the bottom of the screen and drop it on the castle.

Thanks all,
I actually managed to do it last night. Got one into the castle and was able to upgrade/whatever a depleted unit.
What did I do without you lot http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
Did you ever wonder what else we simply do not know that could be of benefit to all players that a decent manual would fix? Thankfully we have the forum.
I am beginning to think the delays in the release of the add-on that was due to 'problems with the manual' were simply that they mis-spelt 'EA'.
Thanks again.
But for real.. people in general underestimate the difficulty of developing games, especially given original STW's less-than-stellar popularity which probably leads to limitations in funds and elbowroom for the developers. And frankly I think the manual was quite good.. needs an index, needs a few things.. this particular issue wasn't addressed in it as far as I've read, only on the back of the tech tree, and it even took me a little while to figure it out.. but there will always be issues like this, it's harder than you think to make a perfect manual.
