I like the music too. Very well done indeed!

STW's music and sounds have always been exceptional, but that's yet another feature that has been trampled underneath these morale/realism gripes...

So. How do the crossbowmen sound? How do the javelins sound? I want to know... STW is one of the few games where battle actually sounds like battle instead of some guy beating two metal rods together.

Well the music now has throat singing which is from Mongolia I think it is. It is quite an unusual sound.

I'm glad you guys like the music, it was a lot of fun to work on. Here's something you might find interesting...it a bunch of x-ray videos of actual throat singers heads. I found this site in my quest for knowledge of throat singing....

I found it quite facinating.

One thing I've noticed is that when arrows hit enemy troops, you hear like 10 arrows hit and groans. Actually, only a couple fall. This is especially common with cavalry.

Jeff (The Shogun Sound Guy),

Good to see you post here again. Anssi's right when he says that many of the good things within the game have been overlooked amidst the problems that people are having. One of those is definitely the in-game sounds.

I was especially pleased to hear battle3.wav finally incorporated. I remember when you first asked if anyone had checked it out over on the .com forum last fall.

I also noticed that the arrow sounds are much closer to the demo version that everyone was so fond of. Well done. I know that not every sound was incorporated into the battle interface, but I was pleased to hear that many were.

One question I have for you is regarding the Advisor and Emissaries in the Throne Room. I haven't spent much time there, as I've been playing primarily Mongols, but were you able to incorporate some of the additional .wav files there as well? In particular, I had been hoping that the speeches for the emissaries would be based on their Daimyo's relative strength to the players (stronger, equal, weaker).

I had also hoped that the advisors words would more closely mirror the events we are questioning (ie advice related to economics after viewing economic data and so on). I know that the .wav files are there, but did they get used?

Overall though, WELL DONE!

I warned you, but did you listen? Ohh, no...it's just a harmless little bunny, isn't it?

I imagine (aside from the complexity in making one, ten, or a hundred groans for each exact arrow hit) the extra groans and hit sounds are from those men who get hit, but the arrows don't puncture the armor or otherwise do fatal damage. While not the heavy plate used by Europeans, Japanese armor did offer fair protection against arrows, and you'll often see battle scrolls depicting samurai with multiple arrows sticking out of them. Japanese horse 'armor' (which was basically heavy corded aprons, if anything) would also lessen arrow impacts, so the horses can be responding to near hits, or otherwise are 'spooked' by arrows landing around them.

Anyway, that's my theory and why the extra groans don't pester me.

The sounds and music ARE up to the standards we expect from Shogun. Coupled with the dust effects, the cavalry is as powerful sounding/looking as ever, although the 'ready...throw/fire' calls from either the Korean skirmishers or the MLC (I don't remember...I haven't played with the Mongols since my one run at the campaign...been enjoying the Sengoku period campaigns too much) does get irritating (that's just nitpicking, though).

One comment though: Both the guy who tells you about the enemy general routing and Kublai Khan sound constipated.

Yeah, great job with the music and sound f/x Jeff. It made me want to pillage a village and slit some throats. It was the thing from the expansion that I liked the most. Actually it was the only thing.... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Thanks again guys. I haven't played the game for months now, since I was in England last. Apparently they're sending me some copies of the game, so I'll test the issues you guys have mentioned and see if I can fix them.

If there's anything else you guys find, post it here, and I'll start a list. As you've noticed...I listen to what the gamers say.

I would like to have different sounds for some of the unit types...for instance, those big spears look like they should make a bigger sound.

Cheers,
Jeff

I like the way the mongolians yell as attack is initiated...makes me yearn for such a 'rebel yell' with all orders of attack.

For an explanation of the Mongol narrator's voice, go to the Mongol Voice Acting thread.

And yes, the music is quite hoss. It makes me wanna go and buy some of that music guy's band's music.. (maybe Jeff? dunno.)
