The Warlord Edition intro scares me... It's real people...
At first I thought it was just some nice graphics, and I go 'Whoa, EA has done a good job on the graphics', and I saw that old man, and when I realised he was real, I became quite scared. He's so old, and he looks dangerous.
And when he didn't notice the rain of flaming arrow fire at first, I thought he was high or something. Then he looked up, and he has this weird look that makes you wanna pee yourself.
If that's what people looked like back then, I'm glad I was born in the 20th century...

First, your handle is crap. On second thought, make that disturbing crap. Second, your post is babbling. A caricature of it might be "The WE intro was like WHOA, man, like, it's real and stuff... and that guy was like scary too, you know, and, um, HIGH!"
It's really annoying. You would do well to either shut up and go away or clean up your act, handle, and writing.
He's just a newbie, no need to flame him. I suggest, no I'm telling you http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif, to go and get a new name.
Ahem.
If you're interested, Mr Monkey, the shots were taken from the film "Ran" by the superb Japanese director Akira Kurosawa. If you don't know much about his work, check out the Japanese Cinema forum, where I'm sure there are loads of threads singing his praises, together with a list of highly recommended films that's as long as your arm.

Yes, Ran is quite a good movie. I'm not going to comment on how it's sort of bogus to "steal" clips from a movie for your game intro, but I must say that if you're going to steal from any movie it might as well be Ran, and that CA at least has good taste :-)

And lol, I doubt we'll ever see monkeyman in here again.. but I don't think u should go that hard on him hehe..

Yes, well, I'm sorry Alastair, I had no idea you could become so emotional over a post.

Since you brought it up, I checked and can find no acknowledgement of the movie anywhere in the written or electronic credits. I wouldn't think that this movie is in the public domain yet, but then I don't know if Japanese movies are copyrighted like here in the states
I don't have a major objection to it, but I do think it is odd that they didn't just stick with generic Samurai battle scenes. Why would they include shots of the "King Lear" old man character from "Ran"? He has absolutely nothing to do with the game of Shogun, and will probably just confuse newcomers as evidenced by the first post of this thread.

Jag, how was I "heavy?" If you mean the opposite of "light," then I just must say that I was completely disgusted by everything about the post. Twiggy, I take it you mean by "emotional" that I was worked up over the post. It's not only the post, but that the quality of this forum has degraded so far so fast as to have people like you coming in and posting things like that.

Don't be such a snob,it was only a general comment on the intro.

Gentlemen IIRC CA licensed video clips from RAN, so let's not go jumping to any conclusions.
Secondly, we have alot of newbies at the moment. Not all of them are used to our community standards, which i have to say have dropped recently anyway, to all our detriment. First and foremost flaming should not go on. alastair i understand you're upset, and to an extent why, but that doesn't warrant the reaction. Lets try and set examples rather than flaming please

I saw that particular movie on Bravo a few years ago. My favorite quote is when that old man is sent into exile after the noted battle sequence, all his soldiers dying except for what I can compare as a performer, he stands on a cliff ready to hurl himself off for the betrayal by his two sons, of which he had given his support, and the performer simply states, 'so is life'. Brilliant! I also saw the movie 'Dreams' on Bravo (no Samurai but excellent)! Nice Italian love storeies too!

Well since they were going to steal from a movie I'm glad it was Ran, but I personally would have taken stuff from Heaven and Earth.

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to imply that they had done anything illegal. I just thought it odd that they would use a movie that is well known to fans of the genre, but not so well known to the general public or newcomers to STW, and not give any credits.
I also thought that their choice of scenes a bit odd. I mean the battle scenes are great, but I am sure there were plenty of other scenes from the movie that they could have used to depict Samurai warfare, without including shots of what would appear to most as a slightly deranged old man with overdone stage makeup. His character has absolutely nothing to do with the game of Shogun and it seems out of place ot me. It's like they picked a film clip without paying much attention to it. No big deal. I just struck me as odd.
I haven't posted much lately to this forum, but since coming back I have noticed that there does seem to be a lot of rage and animosity for no good reason at all. Cutting back on my caffeine has done wonders for me. Maybe some others should try to do the same.
Cheers.

Yes, it was an odd choice, but perhaps they chose it because it was one of the most traumatic, doom-looking scenes, and that was the FEELING they were trying to get across, even of the substance (a poor old defeated man who can't even find a sharp object to commit seppuku with) makes no sense at all.

Wasn't the clip surposed to be in the first version?

Unless you all missed the plot of the movie somehow in the middle of all the outrage, the clip has everything to do with the sp game. Hidetora is a leader of the Ichimonji clan and carves himself a respectable empire in feudal japan. Then, between his failures to properly evaluate not only his rivals but his own heirs, his empire that took over 50 years to build is destroyed in the space of months with no one left from the Ichimonji clan to even hope to reclaim it.
The scene (which is not just stolen/used, they edited the order of it heavily for effect) is when Hidetora breaks after realising that his own sons, Toro and Jiro, have raised arms against their own father in a bid for their own power.
Where again does this scene have nothing to do with the game?

S! Sword Monkey:
Not sure who your post was directed at, but I will respond anyway. By the way I am not "outraged". I was only trying to continue a discussion of comment on the intro.
However let me take one more shot at expressing myself.
1. There are no credits given to the film.
Even if it is not required by law, it would have seemed to be the courteous thing to do.
2. Shogun Total War is a RTS/action game based on historical people, places, and times
with the ultimate goal of conquering Japan and becoming Shogun,
while Ran is a fictional remake of Shakespeare's King Lear set in feudal Japan.
The only commonality is fuedal Japan ,but I don't think that the plot and charactors of Ran, being fictional, nor the theme of family betrayal are anywhere to be found in this game.
The best analogy I could make would be this.
Suppose you had a strategical war game about
the Normandy invasion, and for the opening credits, you used scenes of Tom Hanks from
Saving Private Ryan with no credits. That would seem to imply that the game is about the movie and not the just the historical setting for the movie. If you see nothing odd about that, then that is where we agree to dis-agree.
Cheers
