View Full Version : Mongol voice acting
This is regarding the Mongol narrator during battles, e.g. when informing you that the enemy taisho is routing or enemy taisho is killed. Do Mongolians really speak like that? I come from Malaysia (a South East Asian country between Thailand and Singapore) and I'm a Chinese. The Mongolian accent in the game sounds like a Malaysian or Singaporean Chinese speaking English. Is there anyone from Malaysia or Singapore that might agree / disagree with me?
I find this accent funny but at times also annoying (because it's so familiar). I like the Japanese voice a lot though. It does sound like a Japanese speaking English (but I'm not Japanese so I can't verify that). So does anyone know whether Mongolians really speak English like that? Or did the developers just used some Malaysian / Singaporean joker as the voice actor? http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

I don't know about the Mongolian voices but I can say that if memory serves (I almost always play with Japanese sound) The Japanese voice speaking english is very authentic. For what it's worth the Japanese in the game is excellent.
The Japanese accent, haha, awesome indeed.
I am not Japanese but tried to learn it a while ago. The way that the narrator uses the Japanese counterpart to pronunce some syllables that don't appear in Japanese, its hilarious.
i like the emphasis of the words by The Khan.
and the pauses between words http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
"I....am.....Kubilai....KHAN!..... the .... great.... KHAN!.. apart from that.. i like it

I like when the japanese says 'The enemy diamyo is running for his worthless life..' I laugh every time! it never gets old! James Earl Jones would be a good Mongolian voice though...
The Mongolian narrator is a Chinese mainlander speaking with a heavy Cantonese accent. A good friend of mine with whom I first checked out the expansion picked it out like that, he's had a lot of experience with asian people and culture. Hope this clears it all up for y'all.
Actually, he initially picked it up just from the accent that the MLC was barking orders with. According to him a Cantonese accent is when it sounds like they have both their nose and their butt stuffed up at the same time..
Well anyway..

Khan7, I have also thought about the voice actor being Cantonese, particularly because when the MLC shouts the order to "take aim" the pronounciation is very similar to "take aim" in Cantonese. I do speak Cantonese and I have some Hong Kong friends. The way they speak English is not exactly like the Mongol voice actor. But definitely there are quite a few parts of the narrations that sound very much like a Malaysian or Singaporean. So much so that when I watched the Kublai Khan intro I found it very funny. He sounded like an idiot (sorry, no offence meant towards Mongolians or voice actors) who can't speak English and is stuttering. I imagine him reading from a piece of paper with lots of notes scribbled on it to remind him how to pronounce each word. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
hehe, I think the issue here is a HEAVY Cantonese accent, hehe
As far as Kublai tho, I think he's just supposed to be Mongolian, tho he also sounds funny..

Any Mongolians playing the game? I'd like to hear what they have to say about this.
I had nothing to do with the speech...I like Kublai's voice, but that's about it. The Japanese voice is a Japanese fellow, hence the authenticity.
I'm Malaysian, and he doesn't sound Malaysian. I'm also Cantonese, and he doesn't sound Cantonese.
He does sound like a mainlander though, from the north part of China.
lol i just listened to the Mongol campaign intro again - you're right, he *does* sound like he's got a heavy cantonese accent.
Especially the "from sunrise to sunset" bit.

I am from Thailand, and I am experiencing far worse thing than you are. The Mongol in MI (Thai/English version) speaks some language that sounds like German!!!!! No offence to German people at all but it's just very strange. During the campaign intro and outros the Mongolian voice is used and it's NOT ENGLISH. Only an outro of Nobunaga campaign is in English (the cool Japanese accent http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif).
Does this happen to anyone else?
