Monks beat even a fully upgraded Kensai, after losing about 40 guys usually.
Really the trick to using Kensai in Custom and MP battles is to buy them h0, maybe with some weapons/armor upgrades, and NOT put them in situations they can't handle. Basically the h0 problem is not an issue because they will gain that honor back and more rather quickly during the battle.
But in short, I think there are very few units that they can outright beat on their own. They are VERY good at holding people up for friggin ever tho :-P

I have to agree with Khan (That hurts http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif)
Furtehrmore, they are the second fastest foot soldiers after the battlefield ninja and they only tend to die when they are exausted. So when they become very tired, get them out of there!!! (and send them back in when they come back up to quite tired)
I use them a lot combined with other units to help turn the tide in their favor. For example, once most your units are engaged in melee, send him in support of an important unit that is loosing or that you want to give a boost. They pack quite a punch, charging in....
I'm beginning to think the Kensai should become a small unit instead of a single samurai. Think of it as the master and his favorite students. I'm sure I've missed quite a bit of it, but some of the stuff I have read in the era had "kensai" like samurai that held narrow positions but always in company with lesser (although very good) warriors. If it became a 2 or 3 man unit, then it wouldn't be too far to double it to 4/6 for 120 man games.
I've played through the Mongol "Historical Campaign", and in the last battle against the Hojo I'm pretty sure that the enemy generals unit is 3 x Kensai!
They stick together too, so that makes them a unit right?
I wonder if it's possible to gain such a unit in the full campaign game?

Jpf, 1 double size ND per Kensai unit. What you might have seen is 3 Kensai together, I find this a good way to run them. A Kensai kills very, very fast, the problem is that he is one man so has to kill one at a time. With 3 of them together, you can hit front and both flanks of a unit easily.
