Hi
hope you all aint bored of this one just yet??
Anyway - I havent played the MI yet (in the post) so I make no comments on that other than what I hear here.

My opinion of the moral in STW is that it was spot on in terms of playability - a poor attack with H0 troops would result in running before fighting, and H4 + often fight to the death.

My Question is - In the REAL historic battles how much of a losing army was typically killed - and how many survived to tell the tale? If anyone knows this - then surely it should be the basis for the moral system?

Say for example that units fighting in real life would run when at 50% of original size- leaving half of the vanquished army alive (less the ones hacked down whilst fleeing) - then would it not be best if this were to be represented by an H2 unit in STW/MI - to recreat the realism of directing troops. I doubt that many troops fought till the last - just like few units in stw are above H4.

Thats my take (Pre MI) on moral!

ROFL - he is from Leeds, England - of course his first language isnt english! Them folks all talk funny anyways. After all, everybody knows momenem is a word but them english blokes don't know what it means.

(Momenem - Southern for Mom and Them)

30% casualties if a fairly universal measure in these armies for when a unit becomes ineffective. It doesn't necessarily become useless, but somewhere past that mark it usually routs and cowers in the rear. Normal Ashis standing and fighting to even 50% casualties is not realistic at all, except in special situations like high honor (from unit or taisho), in the middle of a solid formation, winning the fight easily, just stands, etc. There are cases of units standing firm until the last man or close to it, but almost always these are uberelites like the Sacred Band of Thebes or Napoleon's Old Guard. Very rarely does a run of the mill unit perform in this manner.

That being said, most of the casualties in ancient battles come from the post battle pursuit and not the actual battle itself, the figure I've seen most often quoted was 80-90%.

Remeber, all these are averages and exceptions abound in the history of warfare.
