View Full Version : Please, make the game *HARDER*!

Let me start off by saying I have been playing shogun for 4 days now (I only own the warlords edition, don't own the origional and never played it) and I have already won on hard... and will have won on expert by tomorrow night at the pace I am going (this is the jap vs jap map, havn't touched the mongol stuff yet). Ican't even keep myself interested in playing expert anymore because of ho inevidable my victory is... I won't lose because even if I screw up I can come back. I have some advice on how to patch this to make it much more interesting... these are the three main points:
1) You should make the enemies more friendly to one another and more angry at you the harder the game gets. The less in-fighting between te clans the more challenge for you.
2) Fix reinforcements. Nothing new here.
3) This is my favourite. Give us a hardcore mode to motivate us to almost never save the game. Make the game only save when you exit... and only in 30 minute intervals (you can only save every 30 minutes even if you exit). This way we arn't tempted to save before every battle to replay it. At the end, we should get all the info of our campagne (difficulty, mode (hordcore or not), time, # of saves, kills, turns, etc...) so we can take a screen shot and sort of wear it as a badge of honor, competing with other members. Sure that happens now, but not being able to save will bring new campetitive spirits simply because right now any clown can save before any fight to guarante an eventual victory. Of course, if you are not interested in using this mode, you can keep it on normal.
Just some thoughts by an underchallenged shogun fan.
About the save thing.
There is consol style (aka: playstation style), there is PC style.
Playstation based games (or the PC version originated from the playstation games) tend to give you limited saves. For instance, many of them use "save point", meaning that you only get to save once you reach certain point.
Needlessly to say, this implies some action style game, instead of the turn-based strategic game such as STW.
Plus STW is a PC based game, which makes it fall into a completly diffrent genre anyway. For many PC users prefer the option to save whenever possible.
In the battle field, you can't save anyway. So this is at least some thing to bear in mind.
To make the long story short, limited save sounds pretty unrealistic. But one can definitely create a log file to record the number of saves and reloads.
But, what's the point of this? If you don't want to save, just don't save.
You play game to make yourself feel good, do you really have to care about how the others say? Not to mention that screen shots, log files can easily edited.

yeah, a "veteren setting" would have been nice. When a game has been around this long the players know the system pretty well and an extreme difficulty setting is called for. Personally I just picked the game up recently and the single player campaign on expert is already a breeze. I cant imagine how easy it is for people whove played shogun for a year or so.
But even when u make MI harder u will still get ppl like urself,(no offence ment)wanting it even harder,so sometimes its a no win battle http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gifBut yes 1 thing there should be is more levels of diffulculty http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

edit the troopstat file
I save after every turn because if the game crashes (a rare event) I don't want to profit from any rematches. I never replay a turn unless technical problems make it unavoidable. So for me, saving protects the integrity of the game. And every once in a while a battle is so interesting that I replay it after the campaign is over.

This is funny, right under the thread "Please, make the game *harder*", we have the thread "i'm having a hard time winning in MI" http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
That is funny!
Well... make the game harder by pacing yourself. Dont go out attacking every turn. Take it easy a little... do things slowly... try to be 'friends' with your neigbors.

There was a user mod for close combat 4 (and 3 and 5 now) called TT's vetmods. They tinkered with some AI behavior, enemy troop numbers, etc and made what was an extremely easy game into a balls-out challenge for the most hardened players..
Shame that hasnt happened with this game yet.
If you edit the troopfiles.txt you make the troops harder/weaker on all sides of the equation!?
The only way i have found to make the game harder is to modify what the other AI clans start with building wise...i.e. give them large castles and famous spear and archery dojos from the start and watch them produce h1 troops from the start instead of h0!!
One could also edit the troops that each clan starts with and their respective honour levels.

Try Mori, Experrt level, 120 man units.
If you want it harder, play wrong, don't use the "walktroughs", try new strategies.
Or edit the troopstat files as MAgyar wrote.

"Honesty is the best policy." Only save the game when you are about turn the computer off. And don't ever reload the AUTOSAVE file unless your computer crashed.

I always save but I never reload, that'd be cheating myself
Edit the campaign itself. Give yourself less provinces, less units, less buildings.
Make a 2 clan campaign with yourself as underdog.
