View Full Version : Reinforcements and concealment issues....possible explanations!

People having problems receiving their reinforcements, here could possibly be a reason why:

It seems that reinforcements only arrive once your entire initial force has left the map...and i mean every soldier! I picked up on this when I routed the AI army. His reinforcements arrived only once his initial army had completely left!!

In otherwords you can't withdraw some forces to get immediately replenished by others...

Why people find they can't conceal their armies:

It does appear that you can't conceal your entire army! I tried with 3 units and one always remained visible no matter where i situated them...

This may be to prevent the possible situation of the AI never finding you before the timer runs out.

The concealment option therefore seems to be to set up an ambushing force as opposed to allowing you to completely hide your entire force!

Also if the AI gets close enough to the forest then they'll be able to spot you, or if your hiding forces start lunching arrows...(remember to take fire at will off).

Hope this helps some of you a little bit more.... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Reinforcements still seems random.

I have been reinforced only when all 16 units have left the field'but also 1 unit at a time like STW?

Hmmmm, if that's the case it may well be flawed.... anyone else have similar or differing experiences to me or Hach?

I have been reinforced once in a battle. I started a battle and immediately routed a unit, after a bit over half the time period for the battle the replacement came on.

One time I was playing as the Mongols in the campaign. I was the attacker and the enemy had superior forces. I attacked him and killed 75% of his troops, but losing all of mine. I was reinforced with about 9 new units once my old ones had run off. I quickly killed the 25% that was left of my tired enemy. He was sent reinforcements which appeared across the battlefield from me. I did a pincer type thing on him and I won the battle!

The concealment issue is old: You can never hide the Taisho.

I've had trouble getting re-enforcements after withdrawing units too.During bridge battles I'll withdraw archer units who have spent their arrows,or melee units that have been beaten up,and my re-enforcements don't arrive http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/confused.gifI wonder why?

I agree the issue of trying to conceal your Taisho has been said before. But for the 'DoCToR' you can never hide your Taisho. Even if you do what I did once and take a unit of Battlefield Ninja on alone. The AI always knew where they were http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif I learnt from that one!
The re-inforcement issue is difficult. I do not agree with the old system where they all came on from the same point and you could camp there and kill them as they came on. But... I think they went too far. They should IMHO come on randomly anywwhere on your side of the board immediately after you withdraw or lose the other unit. I have sometimes ran the clock out waiting for re-inforcements that never arrive - and that is annoying.

I guess the game used random chances of getting reinforcements unlike in the old game where reinforcements come for sure. This makes the game more challenging as you would not rely fully on your LARGE force. A smaller force now has a chance of winning a battle against a larger force (with the help of some luck of course).

I know some of you are annoyed that reinfocements come from all sides of the map. (Enemy forces coming from your rear... you forces coming from the enemy's rear) I actually like it. We must think that the battle field is NOT the WHOLE province. Reinfocements maneuver "off the map" in order to flank the enemy. This is a common practice in warfare.

Look at the "Enemy reinfocements making me crazy" thread. There's a full explanation by Target (a member of the dev team) of how reinforcements are supposed to work.

The inability to hide ones taisho is bad enough, although I can understand it since I attribute it to spies keeping an eye on the enemy general. (Something Sun-Tzu advocated.)

However, for non-general, non-diamyo units, particularly infantry, it is disturbing to have a concealed Icon and yet have your men seen. I understand that they are concealed to allow a flank or rear ambush. That is the whole point! What good does it do to set up an ambush if the enemy (AI OR HUMAN) sees part of the group there. You think any sane opponent or the CPU is going to say "Well, I cant see the unit flag so it must not really be there." and walk their troops right past you and allow your ambush? I think not. If a unit is concealed, then it should not be visible unless a unit is close enough to see through the concealment.

A fix to this is simple - require that 75% of any unit qualify as "concealed", bestow the status on the unit and make all men concealed. This will keep things like "there are 2 trees on the grassland, I will hide my 60 men there." from happening again. Stuff like that did occur in the original Shogun. Requiring a large majority of the units to find cover keeps silliness from happening while making concealment more useful and dangerous.

Feedback?
