View Full Version : Naginata Cavalry - Good. Maybe too good?
Before WE/MI came out, I was wondering what is naginata cavalry all about? Do we really need another type of cavalry? Now that it's out, I think adding it is a good decision. YC specialises in speed, CA specialises in range (obviously) and HC is strong defensively and kind of medium in offense. NC fits just nicely as the strong offensive but medium in defense cavalry unit. Finally a cavalry unit which doesn't have to be too scared of yari samurai / yari ashigaru. Now cavalry seems more historically accurate, unlike in STW when they seem to be mainly for chasing routing troops and killing archers, plus some flanking (but have to be very careful about yari units).
However, now that I'm playing the 1550 campaigns as Takeda on Expert, I find that NC is just too powerful (and cheap!). So I wonder whether NC is too good the way it's implemented.
What does everyone think?
Well, the difficulties involved with them have prompted me to completely leave them out of the mod I'm working on!
I dunno, I've messed with Cavalry a bit and gotten it to a point I like, but then there was no room for NC to be realistically implemented with their current super-cheap cost.
So Hecose, you've probably got a good point.
My guess is that CA cowed to the wild ramblings about how HC wasn't cost-effective in the original so they thought that instead of adjusting the game so things fit better (as I am currently working on), they decided to randomly throw in a new, cheap cavalry unit with quasi-cavalry characteristics.
Anyway..

i think the nag cav are bit more powerful than they ought to be. they can mow down just about everything, and are very useful in bridge assaults (they take down everything from defending monks to yari). unfortunately this means you can easily have unbalanced armies (check out my thread ...Annoying Part 2).

I do not find the naginata cavarly so powerful since it was completely beaten in a flat map but mongol cavalry. I had to support them with 2ys to kill those mongols!

How does NC compare against the more expensive HC in a straight fight?
Theorectically the HC should win....

Well the naginata cavalry did better against MHC than HC for me.

using mongol cav as a tester for nag cav is a sorry experiment; it's like trying to test the strength of you fist by swinging at a brick wall. mongol cav can beat anything one to one, so try using something more conventional, more along the average to test nag cav's high effectiveness.
I think Nagi Cav are just good as they are.
They're quite cheap, but there are reasons for their reasonable price. A Yari Cav can beat them. They are quite slow. And yaris will give it a lesson anyway.

If you send No-Dachi off to thwart naginata cavalry, then YES, they are too powerful! But, they do add a good dimension to the game... one that was somewhat lacking before... an offensive cavalry unit.
Vanya, all other cavs would beat a no-dachi anyway. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
I think the Nag cav fall between a Yari Cav and the mighty Heavy Cav. The Nag cav is more powerful than the yc but it lacks the stats of a HC.
If there is something unbalanced in them, it's surely the price.
