go for the dutch
u have to wait longer be it better
dutch off musk straight away
however the other guys make u build a catheral b4 u can get musk
and i'm sure u knmow that catholics cause massive revolts
dutch don't cause revolts as they don't make u become christains
however becoming christains gives u loads of money
so if u have money problems then get portaguse
fine ur fine go for the dutch

Well, I usually win before the Dutch arrive and I have never (in either MI or STW) faced a Christian adversary. Yeah muskets are fun toys, but WM kill everything so I never found it useful to go Christian. And the Dutch allow you to get a Musks with out a gun factory, always nice.

I'll go with portugese anyday. The reasons being:

1)You enjoy a big economy boost from the trading posts and cathedral. And those incomes are not affected by the bad harvest. This is especially important if you play western clans.

2)Embracing Christianility ensures a much more interesting if not speedy game. You have to slow down and concentrate on the infrastructures while nurturing the christian percentage. This might sound tedious, but you will end up with elite troops instead of cheap boring crossbow foders.

3)As far as guns are concerned, dutches are not your best bet. Why? Because they come decades later. If you are patient enough to wait that long, you probably won't mind building a cathedral anyway.

Another interesting point is, unless I am seriously wrong, there are TWO ways to get muskets: 1st one, build a cathedral so that your trading posts can get a update; 2nd one, build a gun factory. I perfer the second one since muskets produced from a gun factory get 1 honor bonus, which is a huge plus considering there is no dojo upgrades for gun units (the only other way to raise FRESH gun units' base honor is to build them from the provinces with Ashigaru bonus or from the capital, but then again those provinces don't have iron sand). Not to mention since you need an armory to build the gun factory anyway, there is a potential to put decent armor on your muskets.

4)Capturing gun factory sounds like a good idea but it's chancy. The murphy's law in STW: if you want that infrastructure badly from a rival provinces, it WILL be destroy when you take it.

Also, aren't you already in big trouble if the AIs are piling up elite muskets while your soldiers don't even know what a gun is?

It all depends what year you decide to begin in and if you are playing a western or eastern clan.

For example, if you start in 1530 going christian early on makes sense now because 1.the Dutch appear MUCH, MUCH Later.
2.The economic boost in the beginning of the game especially if you are playing a clan with poor lands like Shimazu( I think you get 100 koku each year for each church you have, once you have a cathedrall+ 200 koku for trading posts).
3. The quicker build time in MI compared to the original game.

Starting in 1550, the dutch appear sooner so i guess and in 1580 three clans are already christian in the beginning of the game.

It also gives you a different game experience.
