second battle. enemy cav rushes my archers, battlefield ninja attck my general right off the bat. nothing seems to help; my general always dies and my archers get mauled before my own cav can get there.
any ideas?
For now I did the Kublai Khan campaign.
And I'm doing the Tokugawa Ieyasu campaign.
Well, I'm still stuck at the Battle of Mikatagahara, so I can't help you. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif

I just tried it and I'm as stumped as you.Another unit of YS or YA with those archers would be a godsend. There's just too much Cav for that lone YA to handle so that I can retreat my archers toward my cav to protect them. This is definitely going to be a challenge.

Soly, it took me three tries to win that one. Unfortunately, I can't remember specifically what I did. I do remember Hideyoshi ran towards the right wing. I think I had the right wing attack but I have no recollection of what happened on the left and how I delt with the BFninja.
Terazawa, I discussed what I did to win Mikatagahara in the thread with "Odawara" in its title.

Well what I did was pull everyone back to the hill were your general and cav start. I hold the enemy cav on the slope until I can get the Yari there and just fire the archers on there. I move my Gen right away from the ninja and eventually were them down with arrows as well when you can hit them. The other enemy units shouldnt go for you until the Cavalry is gone.
I did this a while a go so I hope this is the right battle.

It took me several attempts to win that battle... You cannot save your archer, they will get massacred by the charging enemy cavalry. However they can be used to stop the cavalry charge till the rest of your army reaches the top of the hill. You have one unit of yari smurai on the top of the hill that can flank the enemy cavalryand help stoping the charge. What I did, was to move all my army to the top of the hill and get rid of the enemy cavalry, then the rest of the enemy army will attack you from the valley, and you will have the height advantage, which will help you to win. At the beginning of the battle send a unit of yari cavalry to get rid of the enemy ninja (that should be quick), and then send this unit to the top of the hill to help your archers.
In general, I found the historical campaigns very interesting and challenging. That particular campaign is hard since you start the battle with very bad positioning (the last batlle is hell, took me twelve times to win...). I was wondering if it possible for us to generate such campaigns, where the units and their positions in the map are preselected.
The battle that gave me the hardest time was the one where u had all yari sams/naginata and the enemy - takeda - had a massive , huge , enormous army of cavalry. That took me ages to find the right strategy (enter the woods and be patient) . This one was tough too. Previous advice hits the nail on the head though. Charge your archers head on as they will take less casualties than when backing away. Swing your taisho away , send the cavalry to kill his , and to kill the ninja's. Move to a comfortable position and strike at forward enemy troops , resting your tired men as u outflank and crush some units. Then wait for the main body , hit it , flank it , see it flee.

I've started playing this campaign as a change from the SJ campaign which has become too easy and I find I never use guns as the game is normally over by the time they are available. Like FPV, I too have found this "interesting and challenging" to say the least.
I found that my winning strategy in the battle Sol mentioned was to get everything to the top of that hill ASAP. All except for the Taisho who I kept losing in the first 5 seconds to the BN! So I ran the Taisho downhill towards the cav and then up hill amongst the advancing Cav so that the BN couldn't get him. (Seems to lack honour this approach but it worked!) The YA on the hilltop formed a thin screen to slow the enemy cav down. They got slaughtered but saved most of the archers as my cav arrived in true Wild West fashion in the nick of time.
The victory (at the 6th attempt!) was slightly disappointing owing to the victory conditions which are to eliminate half the enemy. The battle was raging and seemed finely balanced when suddenly the music came on and victory was declared. There was not the satisfaction of seeing the enemy turn and run (nor the even greater satisfaction in sending your fastest units after them to cut them to pieces!)
I'm now trying to get into that castle which is the next battle in the campaign and it seems impossible. I need a legendary Sherman tank or similar to flatten those Kensai. Would that be enough? Or will I need a tactical nuclear missile or legendary germ warfare? :-)

I've got bad news for you Soly. If you can get past that battle and reach the next one (Negoroji or something similar) you'll start to think how easy the last one was. :-)
That castle is impossible IMHO. Has anyone cracked this? Your starting line up is hopeless with 3 good archer units isolated and subject to attack from Kensai and HC within seconds of the start. Two units of cav are conveniently lined up in shooting distance of gunners (and in the wrong direction you need to going).
How do you kill Kensai? This scenario seems unwinnable to me. You have to get 100 men inside the castle. To date I've never managed to get ONE inside(!) and always been wiped out. Ideas anyone? Or have the designers just screwed up with this scenario?

Hmmm. After another try at scenario 3 (Negoroji?)in the Hideyoshi campaign I can tell you that it is possible to win and I came much closer in my last attempt, just running out of time with everyone trying to pile into the castle with 4 Kensai guarding the gate! I'll crack this one tonight I'm sure.
Some tips - those who haven't tried it yet should look away now. :-)
- Nods can kill Kensai.
- Use the Pause button a lot!
- Crush the musketeers with all your cav in the first 30 secs. Your cav are pretty useless early on anyway, because of the masses of YS defenders.
- Get all your infantry into the trees - although you're the attacker you do have to deal with an offensive from a lot of heavy cav. Once they're beaten the task is to breach the gates - my next task. :-)
This campaign is excellent - very challenging and great fun.
