There I was, as Hojo - with a treaty with Takeda and Imagawa on the run. Started building up my defense in Shinano (as the AI thinks that Shinano is the MUST HAVE province - to which I agree LOL) and send my best general there. Rank 4 heir commanding Yari Sams... Oda decides to invade - roughly even numbers. No contest I think - and proceed to thrash the Oda taisho about the head and neck. Battle ends and I recieve - to my horror - a note from Takeda saying our alliance is over - he has chosen Oda over me. My problem - he has a massive army just south of me - commanded by a Level 6 (W-33, L-0)general! Sure enough, Takeda hits me ASAP. Now I am outnumbered 2:1, not counting the extra 1500 men Oda sent to help - and they all get a bonus of 3 honor points cuz of the tiasho!

Battle begins and I am sweating - I have great position but my worry is fatigue and those darned reinforcements... Then I notice something - that Level 6 general is leading a half strength yari Ashigaru unit! I can't believe it! It cost me a 2/3 of my maxed out H4 Yari Cav - but I was able to run the tiasho thru! Suddenly - not even counting the initial penalty to morale for losing the general - all the troops I was facing lost 3 honor points in the piercing of one torso! While I still had alot of men to fight off - they really DID take a LARGE hit due to that loss. Those that fought were very few - and they did not fight long. Even Oda seem to have lost the desire for combat - as in the end the result was a loss of 66 men of mine - and 2348 of the allied invaders. Never before have I seen the loss of a general (or diamyo for that matter) create such difference. That is more like it! Now - if it only happened when the general was Honor 2!!! LOL.

Gad, it must have given you an adrenalin rush! Shinano has always been my favourite province, especially when it comes to defence. I usually have 5 archers and a couple of monks hidden in the jungles, plus some yari cavalry and ashigaru/samurai in the middle. If you use the terrain to your benefit, your archers can simply wreak havoc on the troops below, even when your are outnumbered.

I encountered the same situation (re morale) as yours while playing yesteday. I rushed my daimyo (mori motonari) across the bridge because the enemy cavalry archers refused to budge within range of my samurai archers...He probably hacked 15 of 'em down before I lead him to the edge of the river. The fools tried to follow him (but at this time they' d alreadyt stopped firing) and came within range of my own archers. All in all, 10 died (his hotomachis). He was a level 6 general - Can't believed he made the river crossing by himself! And never once did he waver....what a thrill..

Oh yeah..the computer is pretty smart when it comes to choosing/breaking alliances with you. They will choose whatever that is beneficial to them (kudos to the AI for making it more human). Once I declared war on the shimazu (while playing mori)..the shimazu sent me a message saying they'd broken their alliance with the IMAGAWA...and helped me attack their provinces. Ain't that a shot in the arm?

I repaid them by invading their provinces couple of seasons later..hehe
