View Full Version : Please can we have our Shogun Avatars back !!!

Hi Everyone,
Well .... as I cant post polls .... I have had to resort to this method.
http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif
For months now I have been thinking about this issue ... and with the strong increased number of people returning to Shogun .... and the fact that Shogun is the roots of this universe that we have all created ..... it would be great to have the option of having a Shogun avatar.
I personally never play MTW anymore ...... I tryed to get into it ..... but found it totally lame (just my opinion)
SHOGUN IS THE BEST
http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
So far I have thought of two possibilities :
1) Everyone has the option between having a Shogun avatar series or the current Medieval Avatar series.
2) The option is given only to those who are true Shugun Worshipers - maybe creating an identity for us who keep the game alive
What are your thoughts on this .... please feel free to make suggestions .
And if you are like minded and would like to see this happen in some way include this Smily in your post http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif

*raises hand* we should have a choice... or is this a democracy?

Hi
Excellent idea, you got my vote.

AFAIK there can only be one set of avatar's for the whole Guild, and since the majority of patrons are MTW fans I'm afraid it's a case of losing out. However, there are some STW av's available - once you reach 500 posts you get to chose an av from a predefined list, of which STW av's are included.

Hello guys.... Seems you are in the position I was at the MI forums. Legendary Swordsman was nice but I would have liked a Mongol Horse Archer instead. When MTW came along we had this discussion at length and it was decided that people got their own choice after 500 posts.
Don't worry, there are a few very nice Shogun avatars available...check out the one Kas is using
......Orda
Ikonboard is very customizable, but this avatar issue is a toughy. You may check The WatchTower for some more 'info'.
In short: individual customizing shouldn't result in the entire board to slow down (more code to execute). I'll see what I can do.

Indeed 500 posts is just encouraging spam.

Hi mist http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif
Sounds a good idea m8.
One problem for me, I would like to see the option of a shogun Avatar for the Sword Dojo but because I also play MTW would still like to see Avatars related to MTW http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif as well. Perhaps I will see something related to both when I can choose my own individual one.

Shogun is not dead neither will MTW die.
All games are down to the idividual. Some 'must have' the latest but there is still the members of the community who prefer one game to another.
There are also members who enjoy more than one type of game. (if I am reading posts correctly)

I've changed some code to display avatars. It's a small code and it also fixes other things (most importantly improved looks).
It's not possible to use 2 ranksets, but it's possible to override the rank avatars with another avatar.
People who like to have a STW avatar, can ask for it in this topic. They'll need to reach 500 posts before they can change it. Mist is currently using a STW avatar.

Shogun Total War.
This board uses 6 built in avatars. Anyone with less than 500 posts or no avatar selected, will receive one of those. Under 500 posts also gets a built in title (Merc, MAA). 'Man at Arms' together with a Naginata avatar looks a bit silly. Hence STW to override automatic assigning of the (postcount related) title.
One achieves this by requesting it.
You're welcome Shim.

*sigh* Shim and Doug, you guys are a disgrace http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pat.gif Mongols attempted to attack twice, the first time (in mid 1270s I believe) they werent succesful because of bad weather. During the second time (around early 1280s) they actually landed on Kyushu, but were held back by opposing Japanese forces and didnt get far into land. This was going on for something like 2 months, but ended when a hurricane destroyed half of the fleet and men were killed (and blown back to China) This was of called the Kamikaze as most of you should know, which means divine win. This was the last invansion for nearly 700 years until 1945.
There ya go Jochi, explained for ya http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Oh and btw Tosa, may I have a STW icon?
Jochi Khan
03-09-2003, 18:02
Hi Muneyoshi http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif
Thanks m8 for explaining.
These attacks were under the leadership of Qubilai Khan
The first attack took place in 1274 and ,as you said failed due to bad weather.
The second attack took place in 1281 and failed due to the 'Divine Wind' or 'Kamikaze' as it is known.
Remember, the Mongols were famed for their mounted warriors and were unable to use these in the attacks of Japan. It is to their credit that they learnt to fight using ships.

In 1267 Qubilai sent a message to the Japanese Emperor demanding he accept overlordship of the Mongols. The Emperor did not even bother to reply. Qubilai had the Korean King send emissaries to convey this demand but they were not permitted to travel to Kyoto ( the Capital at that time )
In 1274 a small force of ten thousand mainly Korean and Chinese were sent as more of force of intimidation than conquest. They captured Tsushima and established a bridgehead on Kyushu.
The Japanese were in somewhat of a quandry as to how to deal with this enemy. Time and again their crazy Samurai heroes rode forward proclaiming their reputation and honour.
The Mongol army simply shot them dead. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif
The Japanese retreated and contemplated, confused at this 'strange' way of doing battle.
Lack of supplies? A storm? Nobody really knows but the 'invaders' vanished and the Japanese celebrated this as a victory, believing they had driven off these barbarians.
In 1281 an invasion fleet was launched. It contained 150,000 men. One fleet set out from China from the Yangtze and another from Korea. The Chinese fleet arrived late, Commanders argued but eventually a small force landed and initially made good headway but was unable to take the larger fortresses and walled towns. Because of this they were unable to press further inland as they risked being cut off from the main force who made the mistake of using the ships rather than make camp on land.
The Japanese had had a re-think since last time and resorted to night raids, rowing out to the ships where their superior Katanas were put to good use in h2h in cramped conditions. On land their Katanas were less effective as they never got close enough to the enemy.
The rest is history...along came the Typhoon that destroyed the fleet. Those who did not drown were easy prey for the Japanese.
People tend to embelish the Japanese stand, believing that the fearsome Samurai hacked the Mongols to bits and taught them a lesson when, in fact, the only lesson was handed out by Mother Nature.
Naval warfare was totally alien to the Mongols, they tended to use Korean and Chinese for these duties; plus at the time there was much instability in the Mongol Empire. Qaidu roamed around the Eastern steppes and the Mongol homeland waging war on Qubilai while the same internicine struggles went on between the Golden Horde and the Ilkhanate. More and more it became the case that Qubilai was more a Chinese Khan. This helped in his battles with Qaidu as he had seemingly limitless supplies of men and these were now trained in Mongol methods, plus they also introduced Spear and sword units to the battlefield....... ( hehe Orda's Horde http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/shock.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif ).......These units dismounted before battle and were used against the horses of the opposition and then on the unhorsed rider.
In Java too Qubilai's forces stuttered. Of the two main Prince's
Tuan Vijaya submitted while Hadji Katang put up stubborn resistance. He was defeated but it was costly. While making their way back to their ships, this already weakened force was attacked by Vijaya. Only after many losses were they able to get to safety.
As I outlined earlier, the Mongol Empire was pulling itself apart, indeed Qubilai's reign began with Civil War. Mangku before him had conducted a mass purge to clear out jealous cousins and poisonous courtiers. He had even had Qubilai recalled from China due to his ambition and 'Chineseness' though after Qubilai's submission he was not only restored but Mangku joined him on campaign and died when his army fell sick while beseiging Hochow.
This is when Qubilai became Khan and though remembered for his long illustrious reign he was quite often impatient and impetuous. Was this the case with Japan? I don't suppose we will ever know......and that's what makes MI so good - being able to play out the ' what if ' scenario http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
Ok sorry I'm on my favourite subject and I've waffled on a bit

Greetings, Tosa-sama, Ithaskar-sama, et al...
i have a long way to go to catch up to most of the folks here in the forums, and i certainly don't want to request something i'm not really entitled to... but, if it's not too much trouble, and it's not inappropriate for someone with as few posts as i, i would very much like to have a Shogun avatar... as i've stated before, i'm a late-comer to the scene, but i love playing STW; i don't even own MTW...
any consideration would be great, and i thank you for your time...

thanks to Celtlan, i found the info on using the "Custom Avatar" skin in hopes of creating my own avatar for use here...
i followed the instructions closely, but the changes do not seem to be represented in the Forums... if there is a delay, i certainly understand that and will be patient... but just in case, i wanted to make sure i hadn't made a mistake or done something incorrectly... any help would be greatly appreciated, and again, i thank you for your time...

Konnichiwa Mori Zennousha san,
The URLavatar is only visible in Skin 7 at the moment. As a kind of gesture to totalwar.orgs routs, only the Dojo skin works in this forum.
I'll update your account with a STW avatar.

(Enters and kowtows)
May I humbly beg for a Shogun avatar too? Even though I registered recently I have been visiting the org since Shogun first came out and I always loved the avatars. Shogun may not work on my computor now (curse you DX9 ) but it remains in my heart.
If it's not pushing my luck may I request the one with the archer aiming? The one that kansuke has?

Yay I got a shogun avatar For anyone else who wants one I shall pass on a tip given to me by Celtlan - try PMing TosaInu asking nicely for one.
Thank you TosaInu http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif
I'd like an STW icon, even though I haven't been around in ages...I don't even know what my icon is.
Oh yeah, it's been a while... I don't know anyone anymore... Where did everyone go?
EDIT: A duke?

I think they discovered they were depriving their social lifes too much. So the new batch is in who play that gastly game MTW.
TS
I suppose so. For me, Shogun died when MTW came out. The Org changed, people started to leave... Also, I never bought MTW and don't really plan to unless I find it at a ridiculously low price (ie. bargain bin)... Oh well, maybe I'm getting nostaligc but it was good while it lasted.
Thanks for the avatar I like it
Hello Irving,
Do you play the original STW or WE/MI?
TenkiSoratoti
07-18-2003, 18:30
Its a pitty Tosa, you never got round to putting STW on the top of my avatar.
TS
A bit of both... although I haven't played either of them in a while. I think I'll get a game going in WE. I just think it's a shame what was, isn't anymore.
TenkiSoratoti, members having 500+ posts can do that themselves. Your Control Panel/Personal Info/Edit your member profile.
Irving, what exactely do you mean? Do you (want to) play online?
Oh great Warlord TosaInu, I humbly beg you for a STW avatar. Though I know I am but dirt beneth your sandals,I ask for this one request,so that I may honor my Shogun roots (and if you could make it the one like Aggony Shim2,and include the STW over the pic that would be great too http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif )

Woops, soz TosaInu didn't know that, me being thick again.
TS
No, Tenki, not really. I never really played online a lot.
It's just that before, everyone played STW, and I think The Org had less members and ... oh well. Anyways, it was bound to happen one day. Just think how the STW community will be when RTW comes out.

Yes. But Rome will probably be pretty good well forget STW for a while then go back to it
I think im gonna have to something about the Tenki Clan name: Tenki|Soratoti, so Tenki is the clan and Soratoti is the persons nickname.
TS
True. My bad.
It's just that all these games in the TW series divide the community everytime. First there was the STW crowd, which was divided in the favour of MTW. Then the MTW and STW crowd will start playing RTW. Some may come back, but most probably won't. Anyways, I'm done discussing this... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

You forget the Mongol and Viking crowds. They also split the community just for being on different servers. Might as well have been new games for MP side of things.
Well, I plan on coming back. There is something refreshing in the simplicity of STW. Even after one of my MTW marathons,I cannot resist a rousing good Shogun castle assault. I think those that started with Shogun still make a trip back to castle 1c, if for nothing more than for the nostalgia.
Is MTW that much more complex than STW?
Please explain. Is it just a greater variety of units which in turn gives the player more strategic possibilities?
at least to me,the fact that your choice of units is limited, and every player and/or the AI could havge the same units as you, I feel stress the tactical portion of the game. You must manuver your units more,to track what units counter what, and to think on multiple levels. There is no "blockbuster" unit that can only be used by a certain faction. Obviously this only my opinion, but it is what drew me to STW in the first place.
Konnichiwa Mamushi san,
Please don't do that, I'm not that important. And you're certainly not dirt.
We'll try to organize a tourney to make playing STW a bit more interesting, would you join Irving?

Bugger MTW, it is corrupt.
TS
Sure, but I'd have to practice. I haven't played online in about a year. And if I remember correctly, when I did, wins weren't very frequent. When is the best time to play online?

Bah, I've gotten STW/WE for 9€ last year, and just bought MTW 3 weeks ago for 15€ http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
Total 24€ for a couple of pretty good games http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
I still prefer STW "atmosphere", but the MTW campaign game really has been improved STW...
If only one could do a MTW:STW mod ... Barocca ? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif
Greetings,
Just got promoted so here is my official first post http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif
I would like to humbly request a STW avatar from the great all knowing all seeing Taiko of the forum

i think if you switch skins in the control panel options, you also get the selection of stw avatars, or even custom avatars in which case you can use youre own stw avatar
click on my avatar to see what i have for my custom (which does not show up in mtw skin)
Thanks Solypsist, I tried your suggestion. It did change the appearence but no avatar options. Thanks anyway.
Cheers
Don't all members get a custom avatar anyway, i've got one http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-jester.gif
