1.03 has really taken off in the last 2 nights, with 90% of the room using it last night. The choice over wether you use it though is entirely yours of course. .02 however alwasy was an unfinished patch which meant that a lot of units were unbalanced and over powerful. That is why you may notice people using 1.02 making rules like 4 max and no ashigaru.
If you want a game with no "extra rules" like that then 1.03 allows it and keeps it all fair. Personally after playing 1.03 properly I would rather not play shogun at all than play 1.02.

Is this an offical patch? Whats teh story?

WE/MI v102 was a community developed rebalance with official sanction. However, a deadline left too little time to fully test it before it was released as an official patch. After about a month of online games it became apparent that muskets and yari ashugaru were overpowered and monks a bit underpowered. Several of the same people involved in v102 along with some veteran players who were not involved in the v102 refined it further and released it as an unofficial v103 rebalance. In effect, v103 is what v102 was supposed to be as far as Sengoku Period games are concerned. You'll find that v103 offers better balanced muskets, monks, battlefield ninja, archers and yari ashigaru. All units have an effective counter unit and no one army type dominates. In addition, units were adjusted to fight longer so that there is more time to carry out flanking maneuvers making v103 more of a flanking game than v102 which is more of a shoot and rush type of game. The Mongol era games are still not fully balanced in the v103 with the Mongols being rather weak compared to the Japanese. There is a rebalance of the Mongols released as v105, but this was done by a single individual and did not get the degree of testing by top WE/MI players that the v103 got, but the Mongols are much stronger in v105.

We tried but half the time ppl dont know what the hell were all on about

"103/?" they say with blank faces and somehow they change the subject round and 103 is forgotten. I must say i prefer not having to rely on muskies any more because i always lose with them. And the speed in which cavalry turn now is very nice, good for sneaking up on the side of a no dachi unit.

I've been playing for the last weeks the SP campaigns but its been quite a few months since i played online. It's a big difference between MTW and WE/MI. But bottom line the STW/WE/MI its a better game and i never tired playing it. I just love it. So i want to know if this patch will change the features of the SP campaigns. Cause when u instal the MI the throne room disapeers and also other good features that the original shoggy had. I quite managed to relocate the throne room in the campaigns after a few testings but i dont want to loose it again. Can you get me a feed back on this, please? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

103 is just a small tool that swaps 2 textfiles used to describe unit behavior. You can use the 102 stats or the 103 stats. Swapping is a matter of seconds. No other files will be changed.

Yes Shim, you can play 102 peeps, provided that you swap back to the 102 stats.

Sir Black Raven, it should be safe for your throneroom to use 103. Sounds interesting btw, how did you do it?

Well i install the old Shoggy and then WE in separate folders then i copied the files from one to another. the trone room folder disappeers in WE/MI but if you copy it from old shoggy and place in the main folder and in the voices folder u get it as in the old Shoggy lol, I just love to received the emissaries... hope this help.

However if you do encounter problems, there are a few who can help. Try the Clan Shiinkage forums, Gaijin is very good at this type of thing, if I recall he had problems with XP, but there is a way around it.

Brown Wolf - I had the same problem (except my battle graphics went mad as well), here's what I did to fix it:

1) Download DX9.0b if you are using any of the DX9's. This is the only version I had any success with and it fixes a few security problems. If you aren't using DX9 celebrate, as Shogun seems happier (on my system at least) with DX8.

2) Reinstall Shogun with the maximum size, for some reason having it on any other size makes the problems worse.

3) Set compatibility for your Shogun exe to windows 98, you may want to try a few other compatibility settings but 98 worked best for me.

4) Turn sound acceleration to off in control panel -> sounds and audio devices.

And bingo Shogun works with only minor sound glitching after an hour of play In my experience you cannot skip a single step of this strange fix or it won't fix your problem. For reference I am using the original Shogun release with the original MI release patched to 1.2.

103 problem report upate:

Mime is now dropping, in the same fashion, when playing 1.02 games (? ).

tenkiPanda walked him thru a manual install of the 103 patch and statswapper. Mime dropped regardless.

He is now going to try downloading the patch again from the org site, reinstalling STW/MI, and reinstalling the patch.

Both he and I get "File not found" messages (2 of them) in the DOS emulation window after changing patch versions using the swapper. Is this a problem? I always get the messages, but seem to play and host fine in either environment.

Again, any help would be much appreciated.

I think the answer to this dropping/ out of sync lies not within the Swapper or the different stats but rather with the EA server. When I called in a week ago this is what I had too and failed to get a game. My swapper is the original and has never caused a problem.....only the weak link ( me ) which is forgetting to alter stats. I hope this is resolved soon as I have found the Mediaeval game is too troublesome and never held the same aura as Shogun......

....For 103 Sengoku Jidai games and 105 Mongol games I think I could easily and readily return to Shogun...but not for v1.02

Well I reinstalled the game and now the 1.02 version works but I get the same drop when I try 1.03. I did try d/l the swapper again. I played a test game on 1.02, worked fine. Then I swapped to 1.03 and got dropped in the same way. I swapped back to 1.02 and it worked again. It would seem that something is wrong with the swapping to 1.03 part. How do I know if this is the case and how do I fix it?

btw, several other people tested their 1.03 and they had no problems with it, but when I tested with them I still dropped.

Investigating my end of the v103 problems Mimesaka Akechi Shinano and I were having today, I discovered a problem with my installation of the 10Xstatswapper utility--one that I created during the installation. As it is something that anyone could conceivably do, I will explain what happened here in order to help others who may make the same mistake I did some time in the future.

I followed the directions of the v103 patch carefully, but I made one very serious error. Instead of creating a shortcut to my desktop of the 10xswap.bat file (the Statswapper utility), I copied it. Therefore, when I ran the utility, it was not able to find the files to copy, and therefore, was not changing the stat file values. That's why I was getting the "file not found" messages in the DOS emulation window that the Statswapper ultility creates when you run it.

As soon as I created a shortcut of the 10xswap.bat file that was in my STW game directory and used it instead of the copied version of the same file, the files were copied properly. I verified that the troopstats.txt file was being updated when I switched back and forth between v1.02 and v1.03.

The 10xswap.bat file MUST be located in the main STW program folder in order for it to work properly. Make a shortcut of this file to place on your desktop or taskbar. Do NOT make a copy of it. If you see 'file not found' messages in the utility window, your stats are not being changed when you switch back and forth from v.102 to v1.03 using the statswapper.

This information was the key to solving this problem:

Install Guide for v1.03 (http://www.totalwar.org/tosa/install103/Install103.html)

How I managed to play v1.03 games this weekend is a mystery to me. I would encourage those I played with to check to be sure that they didn't make the same mistake I did. We may have been playing v1.02 games all along http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif

A note regarding my earlier post:
I described to Kas the mistake I had made by copying the 10xswap.bat to my desktop instead of making a shortcut to it. He checked, and had done the same thing

I suspect that many others have unknowingly done this ... .

TosaInu

Konnichiwa,

One wrong stat messes the fun for all. There's no indicator in the game whether the swap was 'successful' and there are no checks in when joining (unlike MTW). The only thing that one could do, is quickly checking the content of the statfiles as described in Install Guide for v1.03 (http://www.totalwar.org/tosa/install103/Install103.html)

Toga should check the install if I understood what you describe here Shinano san.

I'm not worried about the drop for orda's game, drops in big games like that are common even in 1.02. It was a normal drop at start, not the consistant drop right after deploy that I was experiencing earlier. I've dropped at start from plenty of games, 1.02 and 1.03 and it isn't consistantly a problem, you can just try again and it will often work.

Orda Khan
10-09-2003, 19:55
I tested swapping stats with Jochi last night ...we experienced no problems. We both run WinME. One easy check is to select Mongols and see if you have 60 man cav units. if you do you are on 103. As to the drops....I still think it's an incorrect install problem...as Tosa says, it only takes one and the game is over for all

.....Orda

Yep, ran the statswapper twice (1.03, then 1.02) and checked my troopstat.txt file yet again after reading your post, Orda san. Archers have ammo of 28 and mongol cav have unit size of 48 in 1.02. Archers have ammo of 36 and mongol cav have unit size of 60 in 1.03.

My statswapper is working correctly according to these tests, and I implemented the fix before the game that you hosted.

Cool Mime, hopefully the drop we had in Orda's game is as you described. Now we'll just have to play 1.03 a lot and see how it goes.

Played a lot of 103 today, successfully. AggonShim2 (Shimmy) dropped out of sync the first time we played, and sure enough, he'd copied the 10Xswap.bat file to the desktop instead of making a shortcut. As soon as he created a shortcut pointing to the 10xswap.bat file in the game directory instead, it worked like a charm.

Shortcut folks, not a copy. See my earlier post in this thread for details.

Would you believe it, now it's my turn to have probs with Shogun
I've read these posts from start to finish and......although Orda and I tested all stats because of problems other ppl were having and they worked OK but.......now that I have come back to playing Shogun more often I am experiencing the very same problems you guys are having but, in a slightly different way.
I can change stats...no prob...join game, enter battlefield and start playing. Towards the end of the battle (end game) my pc freezes up and I have to shut down and do a cold reboot. This is worse than dropping
I am considering doing a new instal of shogun to see if there is a problem there. Shouldn't be, have played it a few times lately with no trouble.
I have looked but can't seem to track down the

Can someone direct me to a comprehensive list of the changes made in this patch? It didn't seem to come with a readme when I downloaded it and I'm having a lot of trouble with the actual gameplay. (i.e., units seem to be just turning and running without a fight against certain unit types.)

Are these fixes just if I want to use multiplayer, or do they offer enhancements to single player also?

THANKYOU

The v103 affects single player as well as multiplayer unit stats. The only problem you might encounter is that yari ashigaru were weakened considerably in v103, and thus won't be very useful on the battlefield.

They Yari Ashi, seem too weak to me now. Completely useless. They should serve some function other than dieing very fast. So I modded them up to 100 man units. They still take 75-80% casualties, but last longer. They don't seem to kill too well but the serve well to pin a unit while you flank.

Will 1.03 work with my 1.02 saved games? I'm currently having the best campaign ever as Hojo, and I'd hate to have to start over...

Jochi Khan

1.02 saved games will play with the 1.02 stat.
1.03 saved games will play with the 1.03 stat.

You will have to make sure that you are using the right stat to show the replays. Otherwise you will get incorrect results with battles and maps.

With my saved games I have put either 1.02 or 1.03 in the name of the saved battle to identify it.

So after a year or so, is v1.03 the best patch or should I try v1.05?

Up until seeing this thread v1.02b was a dream coming true for me since it finally gave gunners a real chance, especially useful in SP cause rarely was there a reason to become Christian with so empowering Warrior Monks but now I feel I committed many stupid assumptions after seeing that an entire community felt v1.02 wasn't right.

(see the above thread!) :embarassed:

What do most people run? v1.02, .03, or .05?! I mean on the fakeservers since that's what counts now afterall...

Hi Kensai. The guys you were chatting with in the thread you linked to are old hats at STW. Puzz was one of the guys who developed 102, so he knows exactly what he's talking about. But, he and Elmo have rarely played STW/MI MP over the last year or so. I and Mimesaka have played a lot. We came along much later in the history, and most of the "vets" had moved on to MTW.

The most common MP game rules over the last year have been:

- v 1.02, 10K per player

- 4 maximum of any one unit type (4 muskets, 4 heavy cav, 4 nag cav, etc.)

- No Ashigaru (very common; it's simply too easy to make uber-ashi with upgrades which wrecks the balance of the game. Most of the skilled players who have bee playing a lot over the last year forbid ashigaru spearmen).

Even average human players put the STW/MI AI to shame. Even with just 4 muskets in 102, if you play against a good player, you are going to be quite challenged. Because muskets are a bit too strong in 102, you're dead meat against a good player if you don't have them (unless you are an awesome rusher, and you have good luck).

To solve the stat problem, just get a statswapper. Then you can switch between them as you like. They all play so differently, the only way to really get an appreciation for them is to play them and see for yourself. 105 is basically 103 with improved Mongols, and I've used 105 strictly for Mongol games. Usually, when you find players who will play 103, they don't usually impose restrictions on unit types or number of units. Most I've played with use 7-8K per player when using the 103/105 stat. Ashigaru can be used in 103, but they are pretty weak. Guns are toned down too (but still can be effective). Cav charge is better, but their melee has been reduced. Monks and naginata infantry are better in 103. Scan the threads as Puzz has described the stat differences between 102 and 103 over and over and over again ... there are a lot of differences, some minor, some pretty major.

Whatever you end up doing, I hope you enjoy yourself. ~:)

Yes, I finally found out myself about the unbalancing of units once you go over a certain level in v1.02, still I always believed guns were underpar in previous patches and the unofficial v1.03.

BTW, I can't find the link for v1.05, where is it?!

Check the STW MP thread stickied at the top of this forum. Somewhere closer to the end than the beginning, TosaInu posted a link to the Mizu site where the statswapper is still available online. The one I modified to include an installer will give you the option to switch between 102, 103 and 105, provided you already have installed the 102 beta from .com.

Last weekend I did something really stupid: I accidentally deleted my Total War folder. I am still not sure how it happened; I guess I must have pressed shift-delete while having the folder selected. Anyway, I have reinstalled both STW and MTW and I was looking to reinstall the statswapper. However, the statswapper in this thread only installs 1.03, not 1.05. I found Togakure O'Jonin's statswapper, but I don't know if I have to install that 'choice' file that is needed for Windows XP. Is this required for Togakure's statswapper?

And I heard some talk about another set of stats (1.06? 1.07?). Does anyone know what these do and where to get them?

Kensai, you can find Togakure's statswapper here: Clan Takiyama download site (http://www.mizus.com/Files/k0rgs8gVt/stats.shtml). It is at the bottom of the column, just above Tosa's/Puzz3D's statswapper.

Thanks mate, I hope they are the right ones. :)

Regarding the settings, seems that most people online use v1.02 & 1.03 afterall, I don't know if you will gain anything by installing rarer and exotic patches.

Thanks for the information. I am not an MP player yet, though I hope to find time soon to become so. But the problem with time is that never is enough of it. Or so it seems to me at least ~D .

Wow; this patch took me by surprise.

I bought MI on release day but never really got into it, I didnt like the increase in units or the new balance. I installed MI last night so that I could try out this patch and wow: it really is good. Ive always felt that Samurai Archers were underpowered considering they are supposed to be anti-infantry and have ahigh cost, but finally they work hard for their place and an army without them is in trouble.

The only thing I want now is the ability to turn the start up videos back to the ones they were on Shogun... I dont like the poor quality RAN intro :(

Hi folks,

I have the statswapper from shambles website.

I also have STW:WE v1.02

If I download v1.03 as stated here, is it better and can it work w/shambles statswapper?

By the way, is there a new statswapper?

thanks, Domo Arigato Mr. Roboto. ;)

Hi hellas1,

Long time no see. You were having trouble entering the foyer a while ago right? Well if you need help I can try.. but I'm not that good. it would be worth the effort seeing you in the foyer. ~:)

no new statswapper as far as I know.

doesn't the statswapper include 1.03? weird. I don't think shambes would mind adding it to the statswapper if not. well I don't know what the best thing to do is. to play mp you need 1.02 installed, not only changed to 1.02 with the statswapper... so
